“I wish you were here” - incubus, the way the lead singer belts this out… “Loving you isn't the right thing to do” - Fleetwood Mac, best. Break up. Songs. Ever. And for all those who remember them and still have their cd (ie probably just me in the whole world!)…. “Across a 1000 miles of broken glass on my hands and knees, I would crawl if for a moment we could cease hostilities” - the darkness (that one’s for sleepingbooty but I can’t tag her on my phone 🥲)

Love You Madly
Cake Lyrics
I don't want to wonder if this is a blunder I don't want to worry whether we're going to stay together 'til we die I don't want to jump in unless this music's thumpin' All the dishes rattle in the cupboards when the elephants arrive
I want to love you madly I want to love you now (I want to love you) I want to love you madly away (I want to love you) I want to love you, love you Love you madly
I don't want to fake it I just want to make it The ornaments look pretty But they're pulling down the branches of the tree I don't want to think about it I don't want to talk about it When I kiss your lips, I want to sink down to the bottom of the sea
I want to love you madly I want to love you now (I want to love you) Yeah, I want to love you madly away (I want to love you) I want to love you, love you Love you madly
I don't want to hold back I don't want to slip down I don't want to think back to the one thing that I know I should have done I don't want to doubt you Know everything about you I don't want to sit across the table from you wishing I could run
I want to love you madly I want to love you now (I want to love you) I want to love you madly away (I want to love you) I want to love you, love you
Love you madly

What an interesting thread this is! I've pulled up a lot of songs on my Spotify to listen to as a result of it.
And I'm adding a second entry for me:
"Like a wave he swept her off her feet, Until the years brought her to her knees, A cage left with an open door and the poor little bird said, I'm ready. Ready to soar."
It was a bit of an anthem for me during my separation and divorce. The song is called Lila and is by a fairly obscure songwriter/singer in South Carolina called Dip Ferrell and the Truetones.

So many depending on exactly how you define "best." Best imagery, best thought that sticks with you, best wordplay, most clever...
A couple that stick with me are "Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy." The Eagles, "Take It Easy" "Son can you play me a melody? I'm not really sure how it goes, but it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete when I wore a younger man's clothes." Billy Joel, "Piano Man"

Through the years, as the fire starts to mellow
Burning lines in the book of our lives
Though the binding cracks and the pages start to yellow
I'll be in love with you
Dan Fogelberg "Longer"
This song was mine and DH's first dance at our wedding. It still speaks to me 35 years later, especially this line.

I have two that always hit me in the guts:
"You ask me to enter, and then you make me crawl" - U2, One
"The ride with you was worth the fall, my friend" - Whitney Houston, Didn't We Almost Have It All

"I'll be the greatest fan of your life" - I'll Be by Edwin McCain. DH and I danced to this song at our wedding reception. I read that this song was written about a breakup but it became a wedding song, etc. McCain was okay with it. Said it wasn't his place to tell others how to interpret the song.

Some of the lyrics aren't perfect for a wedding. DH and I chose it because on our first date we went to a country bar and the band played that song and we loved waltzing to it. That same band played at our wedding reception.
