Happy New Year's Eve everyone! I have no plans for the day ... I only have one resolution this year: READ! So I guess my plans are to choose a book ... I have so many downloaded on my ereader ... and do some reading today! My girlfriend is coming over this evening for dinner and Netflix ... the chances of us making it until midnight are zero! I'll let her choose what we eat ... This is what I posted on Facebook today ... I drink a lot of liquids in a day so I definitely need to get up in the night ... I also have chronic insomnia so I see midnight, 2am, 4am, etc. What are your plans for New Year's Eve? What are you doing today? What is on your menu tonight? Happy New Year everybody!

Hi leannec! I had a banner year for reading. I read 44 books! Last year I thought was high year at 27. So I clearly spent more time reading this year. If you are curious about what I read, I did a Facebook post this morning with the 12 books I rated 5 stars. Just in case you need a recommendation. I'm cutting fabric right now. I need to practice my triangles. So I am working right now to cut fabric. I am also doing my laundry. My friend told me it is bad luck to clean on new years day. So I'm doing all I can today to make sure that I don't have to clean tomorrow because I could use some luck. And then I bought Jeremy a Blackstone grill for Christmas. It was on his wish list for camping. He is insisting on trying it out tonight so he is making us chicken fried rice. I cooked the rice for him yesterday.

If you are curious about what I read, I did a Facebook post this morning with the 13 books I rated 5 stars. Just in case you need a recommendation. I saw your post and a couple of titles stood out to me ... I will look into them! My mum and I share an account and we love thrillers ... that is mainly what I buy with the odd non-fiction thrown in! She devours books and I used to ... gotta get back into it.

Well, I'm going to unscrew a lampshade, so that at 12:14am I can put it on my head while dancing on the table. AS IF! I'll be lucky to make it to 10:30. We also stay in for NYE. Too many drunks on the road. Yds is home and yesterday we started watching The Batman. Tonight, we'll hopefully finish unless he goes to a friend's house before everyone goes back to school/work. Ods is going back to his apartment today, but he has the week off and will be here on and off. Dh goes back to work on Tuesday for his last 2 months. He describes it as surreal. leannec , watch something entertaining and enjoy your NYE w/your friend. ntsf , I'm looking fwd to hearing more details about your cruise. Which cruise line did you take? I'm sorry that it ended w/covid. That part stinks. Delta Dawn , This will be dh's first time making Chashu. When he was growing up his obachan(grandma) made all of that stuff. Happy New Year AussieMeg . I hope you enjoyed a nice NYE.
I need to read more. As a kid I always had my head in a book. I love reading, but don't do it often enough. ETA, AGAIN: I love James Patterson. The Alex Cross series is really good if you like thrillers. I have a few of them to read. Also, I enjoy John Grisham.
May everyone have a safe, happy and fun NYE.

This morning was a regular Sunday - phone calls and church. I rang my dad to get more info on my stepmum and to see how he is holding up. From what he said, things were a lot more serious than he let on in the family chat and we could easily have lost her. She is now breathing on her own and was able to speak to dad, but is still in ICU. Dad is hoping she will be out of there tomorrow and home many the end of the year. The first may happen, but I am doubtful on her being allowed home so soon. We also spoke to DS1 and 2, as well as Sophia. She was just so excited it was hard to keep track of her conversation. She knows that ‘tomorrow is next year’ and that it means she will soon be going to school. She also said that the best thing about the Christmas box was ‘the chocolate Santa’, which was delicious!
After we came home from church, DH started prep on his NYE feast. He has a spreadsheet on his computer with what needs to be done when, and the order of courses and what each entails. We are now down to things that need to be done not long before eating, like the marinating of the fish for ceviche and the like. Our full menu is: Fish ceviche Beef tostadas Avocado and mango salad Chilli prawns Scalllop tostadas Crème caramels - we couldn’t get all the ingredients needed to make proper flan from scratch, so this was the best we could do. There will also be champagne.
Just before midnight, we will head out for fireworks. We haven’t done NYE here, so we don’t know where the locals gather, so we’ll follow the crowds.
Wishing all my dinner tribe friends a lovely evening, whether or not you stay up to the bitter end, and everything wonderful in 2024.

Pardon me while I step into your thread ladies...I'm testing out the nsbr for the new year Thanks for the culture/identity lesson Delta Dawn - I love hearing other languages names for relatives and identification with heritage. sueg - prayers for your stepmum! Very good news that she's off the vent and talking but I agree that she probably won't be home quickly. Your feast sounds amazing. Not sure if I'll try for midnight - will have to see how I feel! We have a small "party" happening, but it's DD's friends (they're all 20) so I don't have to hang around. But I am making everyone our "fancy mac and cheese" for supper. It's a family favourite, includes caramelized onions, bacon, bacon fat to make the cheese sauce, 3 different types of cheese, and probably some cheese curds this year as I have some left over in the fridge from making poutine. I'll also add all the rest of the christmas turkey since it needs to go!

I am finally going to make the ham and bean soup with our soup bone from Christmas. We'll have rolls as well. Ds is going to a NYE party at a friend's house, so dh and I are on our own. We will probably make it to midnight, but will be in bed at 12:05.

Welcome kitbop. Pull up a chair and enjoy. sueg, I'm thinking healing thoughts for your stepmother. That she's awake and talking is a good step fwd. I'll continue to send positive, healing thoughts her way. When does Sophia start school? Delta Dawn, dh is Sansei. His parents were both in the camps during WWII. Since ods teaches history he has some of the documents in his classroom. It's fried rice weekend. Dh made his fried rice yesterday for lunch.

Happy New Year's Eve!
DH and I hit up the grocery store early this morning. I needed to get out of the house for a bit. I love my parents dearly but I am ready to have my house back. While we were out it started to sleet. Fun...
I have been doing a little bit of work on the computer. Sometimes it's just easier to do some things at home instead of the office. DH is working on the puzzle we have not managed to finish. I think I will join him. I really need to clean up my scrapbook room but I've lost that feeling.
We will stay home tonight. I am not much of a New Year's person.
Dinner will be a nice steak dinner.

We are not. Dh's family always did a huge feast on NY when his Obaachan was alive. She was very old when she passed away. When sil is out here I learn more, because she was more involved in activities at the temple than dh. So, my children have 2 vibrant, wonderful cultures to share.
I think it's so cool that you speak Japanese. DH can understand, but doesn't speak. I can say bath. LOL.

Just got back from our walk ~ in the 40's so we were bundled up. We love where we live, everyone we passed said a hearty HAPPY NEW YEAR'S EVE! Now DH is settling in to watch the 9ers. I'll do busy work while it's on. We're watching Reacher, Fargo and Shetland now so we'll watch some TV tonight and go to bed at our normal time of 11:00. We're beyond the days when we would party all night! Welcome to the table kitbop ! If you stick around, we'll teach you the secret handshake! Dinner will be gumbo ~ yum!

We’re having taco chicken salads for dinner. For some reason ds picked up 2 avocados last week and they’re both ready to be used. There will be copious amounts of guacamole eaten!
I may open a bottle of wine tonight but would have to drink it all myself, which is a bad idea!
Dick and I got married 11 years ago tonight, at midnight, with his three sons, my son and daughter standing with us. It’s been 4 years since he passed and as the years have passed I have heard From any of his family less frequently. Christmas was the end for me. I didn’t receive so much as a text from any of my stepsons or their wives. I was very upset and the next day decided to do myself a huge favor and I deleted every member of Dick’s family from my Facebook. I understand that I don’t mean anything to them and have accepted it. Sorry to be a downer on the thread today.

KelleeM, it's just a shame that Dick's kids leave you out of their lives. Their father was a wonderful guy and he was very lucky to have found you and vice versa. Today must be very bittersweet. I remember when you got married and posted the photos. Feel free to share stories w/us. I'm listening and here for you.

scrapmaven - the school year in their state starts on Jan 30 for the kids. Teachers are back on the 29th. Many schools start their older kids on the first day and the ‘preps’ (short for preparatory) a day later. The little ones also often start with half days for the first week.

Ds and I went to Costco at 8am to get has then get the items for the month. In and out in 20 minutes. Also no line at the registers. I wish they opened at 8:30am every Sunday. Or at least 1x a month.
Dh and dd are going to see Aquaman 2 today. I am going to craft while ds plays.
Dinner is Mexican. Tacos/tostadas and Mexican rice.
I follow this recipe:

I am not going out tonight and haven’t in many years. Too many drunks and just not my idea of fun. I’m currently roasting a chicken that will be available all week.

kelleem..hugs..
sueg prayers for your stepmother.
my son and his wife got 49'er tickets a long time ago.. and are at the game. they said there are more niner fans than anyone else there. I got up to watch the game..dh sleeps on..
we are long time princess cruise people.. so we get lots of discounts and extras.. like free laundry. we were supposed to take this cruise in april 2020.. you all know how that turned out. we look for more obscure destinations.. or longer. papua new guinea was very remote. at times, you felt like you were in a. national geographic photo. unfortunately, still plagued by local tribal violence. but like people everywhere, a smile goes a long ways. and many spoke a little english. the snorkelling was outstanding.. I saw at least 40-50 types of fish, and dh saw turtles, manta rays, sting rays, and sharks. postcard bright blue seas and white sand beaches. lovely people.. we only took ship excursions... though we talked to many people who wandered around by themselves. I had. never been on a ship for the holidays, so that was a bit different. many people thought we might be canadian.. it was guess the accent. no political talk!! my dh's fav gift to buy was a small drum..all the dances and such were powered by drums, big and small.. like tree trunk chunk sized. at the stops, people came from hours and hours away to interact with the tourists and make money.
at one stop, several people asked me to exchange american money for their local money.. which I was glad to do.. they don't have ready access to something like a bank..they gave me dollars and I gave them kina..
