If you plan to be able to take the bench cover off and wash it when it gets soiled or dirty, then I would pre-wash the fabric, to take care of any shrinkage.
If you're going to use the fabric to upholster the bench, and you'll never take it off to wash, and if it gets dirty you'll either spot clean or replace the whole thing, I wouldn't pre-wash.
I'd love to see pictures when you're done!

Have to agree...usually I prewash any fabric that will be washed in the future. Some upholstery fabric is pre-starched though and I would not want to wash that out if I didn't have to do so. So if it is going permanently on the bench, no I would not prewash, but I would consider scotch-guarding it against stains.

thanks for the info. I wish had taken a before photo. The bench was painted with an antique green paint, with gold highights. The bench part was upholstered in a zebra print. I got it at a consignment shop.
