Worse than the noise? The people on their balconies smoking pot. Gag. The way the building is built it just all wafts into my open windows. Oh that was the worst in my condo! I'd have my windows open enjoying the breeze at night and all I could smell was pot from the upstairs neighbor's balcony. I'd immediately shut the windows and then spend the rest of my night annoyed that I couldn't so much as open a window in my own place. They also put a swimming pool on their balcony and would empty it nightly. It flooded my patio out every single day when they would tip it over the edge. Just thinking about some of this stuff is stressing me out and I haven't lived there in five years. I cant figure out why people are so inconsiderate (I can in real life, but in an apartment...never mind, it is all one in the same). A pool? That is against our condo rules. People on the ground floor have one out on the grass, but no one on the balconies (as of right now, I wouldnt put it past them). The shithead upstairs throws her cigarette butts over the balcony railing. My fear is one day it wont be extinguished properly.

We call it the weed house. Fortunately the smell doesn't drift to my house. So gross.

I lived in a duplex. Our kitchens 'share' a wall. There are actually two independent walls but they are side by side. And our garages share a wall. Upstairs one bedroom shares a wall.
We have lived here for over 25 years and 98% of the time we can hear nothing next door. Occasionally a cabinet door slamming or very faint music. My daughter can smell pot from her bedroom sometimes. Not sure it if is coming in from outside or through the wall.
Regarding the pot thing. I don't care about who smokes it for whatever reasons.. but their pot smells sooooooooooooo bad. I already think it is stinky, but their stuff in a whole other level of stinky.

No advice leannec. But maybe white noise might help some.

Like you said, people are just extremely inconsiderate of others. Those cigarette butts would make me very nervous too!

I would really struggle in your situation. I get not wanting the outside maintenance, but the noise would drive me batty and probably make me cranky. I love not shovelling snow off of a driveway ... that was a nightmare! But "Loud Baby" is getting on my last nerve! . She is about two so old enough to have some self control ... she is loud because it gets attention ... I don't know how her family deals with her ... she's a handful!

This year has been rough for shoveling! We have two of us who do it, but the last snowfall had 2 feet. Usually we get 4-6 inches. I do like to shovel... but not THAT much.

My first house was a townhouse. NEVER AGAIN. One neighbor was horrible. Her son would play loud music all the time and apparently they could hear when my dh and I were talking. We were going through IF treatments and we were very tense and had a few candid discussions (not arguments). This neighbor mentioned things that we had discussed in private. I HATED living there and spent as little time as possible there. I was always on edge and dreaded spending any time at home. They moved out when their house was raided because of drugs. A new family moved in and had about 10 people living in the home. Random friends/family members would move in and out all the time. Our car got stolen and the day we got it back, we put the house on the market. To this day, I hate vacationing in a townhouse and/or an apartment. I have become so sensitive to noise that I am always on edge. I have to keep reminding myself that I am not living in these places but it is still hard 25 years later. My therapist said that I absolutely had PTSD from living there.

I don't know how her family deals with her ... she's a handful! I live next door to a screamer who's around 3 years old. All day everyday from 6am to 11pm. I was told by her parents that since she is a girl, she has hormones raging in her body, and needs to scream to let them out.

I live in a townhouse, but thankfully never hear my neighbors. But I used to live in a condo with people above / below me. I felt like a heard of elephants lived upstairs at times, but realized it was probably just not great construction, even though it was newly built and supposed to be sound proof.
I realized that when the neighbor below me complained about my noise, and I was just a single girl with no kids or pets who didn't do anything out of the ordinary! Then I realized he was complaining about noise on dates I wasn't even in town, so it must have been other neighbors he was hearing, thinking it was me. It's just a part of that life, unfortunately!

I should also note I live in a complex where children are not allowed to live and one person must be 55 years old to live here except me. I am grandfathered in because we already lived here and I am now 55. My kids don’t make any noise.

I don't have the patience to deal with other people We had a bunch of young kids that either rented or had purchased the house next to us. It's a small house, 2 bedroom. It was a weird set up b/c it was a couple living there and one of the guy's friends. DH always said something was going on between the girl and the friend while the guy was at work. Our bedroom windows face the backyard and these folks LOVED to smoke pot. She was out on disability (EMT and hurt her back) and I don't know what the friend did b/c it only seemed like her boyfriend worked. Anyway, couldn't have our bedroom windows open at night b/c of the pot smell. Couldn't have the kitchen slider open during the day because of the pot smell. They'd throw some parties in their yard but what can you do, it's their property. Before we bought our house we lived in a 3 family and we were the middle apartment. I think that cured me of ever wanting to live in a condo/townhouse. The downstairs family, the mother was always yelling at the kids, 24/7. The upstairs apartment had kids running around, in what I swear were cement shoes, and it started between 4am-5am every damn day. We tried talking to both and nothing changed. It was exhausting.

I have lived in a townhome for 5 years. There is no one above me or beneath me. I am on a quite small corner lot. However, across the street in front of me is a gorgeous park with a lake. In AZ, that is a HUGE rarity. Everyone who comes over raves about the location.
I share one (concrete-type) wall with my neighbor. I have never heard a single thing.
In June 2021, I bought this place and was beyond thrilled to do so.

I have in the past, and in our case the layout was nice in that the areas that had the shared wall were lesser used areas or non-living spaces.
So the entry shared a wall, the staircase shared a wall, the utility room, laundry, and 2 bathrooms shared a wall, as well as 2 hall closets. So inside, the only time I heard anything was if I was in my laundry and theirs was running, and at one point the guy next door used to have long conversations with her girl friend while getting ready in the bathroom in the morning. I don't know if she wasn't in the room & he was yelling, but those conversations came through pretty clearly.
For us, the real issue was that we had decks out back with privacy barriers which was nice. But, those same neighbors tended to only use their deck later in the evenings, while we used ours much earlier in the day. In terms of privacy while outside, this was great. But they smoked on the deck, and the smoke would come in all of the back windows each night during the times of year when we could have our windows open, which was a real bummer.
But there wasn't anything we could do but live with it until we moved out. We just tried to remind ourselves about all of the things we really liked about living there and try to grin & bear it.
Crossing my fingers that the child is just in a screaming phase, and moves out of it soon, and that the vacuum-happy folks decide to take a rest. Hugs!!
