Wow! Are these mobile vans that move around the city or mounted onto poles? It says it takes photos from top-down, so it that on a long pole connected to a van or a camera mounted high up on a pole? That is pretty intense. I wonder what kind of weird photos that get, if you know what I mean.

I use CarPlay to send and “read” text messages. Completely hands-free as it should be. I checked no but this is what I do too. I never need to even look at my phone much less touch it to send or read a text. It’s illegal here (as it should be everywhere) and I don’t need to get into a wreck or get a $250 ticket just to tell someone I’m running late.

Nope, never. If there's some reason I really need to text I'll pull over. If it's urgent, like I am running late to work or something, I will use the calling features built into my car to call someone.

I knew of one that was mounted on a big light pole, just near a set of traffic lights. But when I just googled, it looks like they are mobile cameras, and get moved around every month. Here is a news report about them, from last year:

Never. Research has shown that texting while driving is more dangerous than drunk driving. Please go research it.
Distracted driving is distracted driving regardless whether DUI or texting. And in fact, distracted driving due to non DUI causes more injuries and monetary damages than DUI driving. DUI gets more attention as it causes more deaths.
I’ve been rear ended four times and now live in constant pain as a result. Two admitted texting when they hit me and one was DUI while texting.
I am still doing physical therapy twice a week almost ten years after the first accident just to minimize pain in order to function day to day and have regular steroid injections at least once a year since.
So no, I don’t text while driving. It’s no worse than drunk driving.

No, I would not text while driving, legal or not.
I make a very big effort not to even speak on the phone while driving, again, whether there is a hands free law or not. If I am initiating call, barring an emergency where I cannot stop for some reason (which only ever happened once in my life), I pull over to call or have a passenger make the call if I have a passenger.
And if the phone rings while I am driving, if it's not an emergency I ask the caller to let me call them back, and then I pull over.
My phone lives in the car. I only carry it with me if my kids are away from me and I'm not someplace where they can call a landline to reach me. So I don't even know how to use the phone hands free. So I simply opt out of using it except for emergencies.

Not a fricken chance. It's way too dangerous, and the penalties are too high: South AustraliaSo if you think you're going to get away with it, you probably won't! the fine in South Australia is a little more $540 plus $99 victims of crime levy. I have better things to spend my money on than a fine!

I can barely text sitting in a chair, so no. I've started using Siri to help me out. In the interests of honesty, I sometimes have to click several screens to get to the Radio Paradise song rater to rate a song before it's over (rated songs go into a Favorites playlist) but try to do while sitting at lights.

It's illegal to text and drive here, even at a red light. I wouldn't text and drive. In the above situation, where I'm running late, I may ask Siri to text the person for me but that's as far as I go. If, for some reason, I had to send an involved text, I'd pull over, send the text and let the person know I'll be driving so if it's important that they need to speak to me immediately, to call me.

I usually do talk to text if driving. If I am stopped and get a text I will glance at it. 99% of the time I wouldn't respond. Maybe 1% of the time I will send a quick yes/no type thing if stopped. I won't lie and say I have never done it. I'm sure I am guilty here or there. It's not a habit and I don't do it on a regular basis. Just like I said before mostly talk to text if needed. It is a misdemeanor in CO. Looks like a $300 fine and lots of points.
I kinda laugh at some of the responses that I never do it because it is illegal. Which I totally understand. It's illegal to speed, and I speed all the time. 1 mile over the speed limit is illegal.

I try to either call or occasionally voice text (but it sucks). I admit I do occasionally text while driving but only while at a light and not just for fun texting...only for urgent/important texts. I always try to be cognizant of what is going on though--i do this rarely.
I have definitely pulled over too.

I voted No, because I won’t read or type while driving, BUT I do lots of voice texting via Apple CarPlay while I drive. So honestly, I’m not sure of the right away to respond.
ETA I’m switching my vote to Other.

I have CarPlay as well. Hands free. Still probably considered a distraction. No different if someone was in the car with me talking. Adding to the previous thread…..I don’t keep my phone with me all the time. You can text me but I likely won’t see it.

California has a campaign, "hands free or ticket me" - I got caught on my phone and had to pay the ticket when it first started. Even if the judge waives you off you still have to pay the administrative fee for the ticket which was about $150. Long Beach Police are doing a distracted driving campaign in the Belmont Shore right now and they're just pulling people over left and right ALL.DAY.LONG. - I can see it from my windows where I work.

I don’t. For me, even talking on the phone while I’m driving is really distracting. The only thing I do is listen to the radio.
I found that when I was talking on the phone while I drove, I’d inevitably drive past my destination or go the wrong way. Guess I’m super easily distracted.

I use voice to text through Android Auto or I just call if I need to get an urgent message to someone before I can stop. It's illegal here where I am, too.

I keep my phone in the back seat or on the floor. I can talk to my watch if it is important. If I feel like I have to text, I pull over.

I will at a light, I have no idea if that is or isn’t legal here. I know you are not in California, but here, it is illegal if the engine is running (this is mainly to avoid red light texting), but legally, if you are parked and the engine is running, you can get a ticket.

I think as long as your car is not in gear, it is ok. But, I don't know, it is a gray area and probably depends on the cop's mood at the moment.

My DH is retired LEO and he tells me stories about how someone is getting a ticket, then they proceed to talk shit to the officer, and maybe get on the phone before they drive away, but still parked (with the engine running) and now the officer tacks on the cell phone usage to the ticket.

No, I use Android Auto and can just dictate my text if it's necessary. It's usually not but sometimes I get something work staffing related while driving and my commute is about an hour so I need to be able to answer.
Texting while driving on a freeway isn't a good idea! I have Google read them to me and reply that way.

I use CarPlay to send and “read” text messages. Completely hands-free as it should be. This and even then, I only use it when there is a timeliness needed. I feel like any distraction can take my mind off where it needs to be (that's just me).
