Seriously, WTH ? I only have about 8 contacts. And the rest is gone. They were there yesterday.

First, close the app. Double click the home button, and swipe the screenshot of your contacts app so that it disappears.
If that didn't work, try a reset :- hold the sleep/wake button AND the home button in at the same time - the screen will go black but keep holding until the apple logo appears. Let go and the phone will reboot.
that fixes lots of problems.

Apparently I really am ditzy. I turned off iCloud by mistake. Turned it back on all contacts reappeared magically. Hahaha
