I finished a Southern fluff book: The Reading Circle by Ashton Lee. It's book 2 in the Cherry Cola Book Club series. It was predictable, and an easy read...just what I needed during the sometimes-chaotic Christmas season. I'd give it 3/5 stars...easy reading.
I just finished We Were Liars. I sat down to start it, and read the whole book in 2.5 hours. Wow! I'm still thinking about it, but I think it will be 5/5 stars.

I made plenty of time for reading on my vacation. Four Letters of Love (Williams) I really wanted to like this one, but didn't. It's set in Ireland and follows the lives of a man and woman until their paths finally cross. Too predictable for me. The Dog Stars (Heller). I loved this book! If you enjoyed "Station Eleven" you will like this. It's set in Colorado after a flu pandemic has killed about 90% of the population. It's stark, at times violent, but also incredibly beautiful. T he Pleasing Hour (King) Another book I wanted to like, but it was only ok. An American girl with a troubled past becomes a nanny for a wealthy family in Paris. The descriptions of the city and country side are excellent, but none of the characters struck a chord with me. The Kingdom of Ice (Sides) An outstanding non fiction read! Tells the story of the USS Jeanette, a ship and crew who attempted to reach in North Pole via the Bering Strait in 1879. So compelling, I read until 3:00 a.m. This book was on Amazon's top reads for 2014 and lives up to that billing. In the Kingdom of Ice sounds fascinating-just dowloaded it to my Kindle.

I am reading The History of Rain [/b]. It was recommended here and is a beautifully written story about a girl telling her family history. I am reading slowly so I can enjoy the prose. It may be one of the top 5 for the year for me.

I read Paper Towns by John Green which is being made into a movie this year. I enjoyed this book about a boy who has the night of his life with the beautiful girl next door. Then she disappears the next day. He starts finding clues that he believes are for him so he decides he must be the one to find her. Overall, I enjoyed the book but there were some times that I wished for the book to move along. Just find the girl if you are going to!
Then I read Exposure: A Modern Day Spin on Shakespeare's Macbeth by Kim Askew. I actually read this one for a couple of Goodread's challenges. I have not read Macbeth, so I can't really comment on the retelling aspect, but it was an ok light high school story. This author has a whole series of Shakespeare retellings.
And finally, yesterday I read Larger Than Life a novella by Jodi Picoult. It is about a woman and her rescue of a baby elephant. It sets up the characters for Leaving Time which I plan to start today.

California by Edan Lepucki - a post-apocalyptic world exist in the US and this is the story of a young couple's efforts to survive in the wilds of California. Sounded good, started out great, then it got weird. I ended up giving it 2 out of 5 stars. I can't really explain why it petered out, but the author left many, many questions unanswered. There was a build up for events, and then things just petered out. It aaas like eating fast food - you think you like it at the time, but don;t feel so great afterward. I can;t recommend this one.

Oh, that sounds good - off to add it to my list. MacBeth is my favorite Shakespeare play. I read a Victorian fairy tale origin story for Santa Claus by L. Frank Baum, The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus. It was a delightful Christmas Eve read. I also finished Unbroken for Book Club. I don't think there's much to say that hasn't been said, but I was worried that it would be a difficult read due to violence, and I was pleasantly surprised at how delicately the author handled the story.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through Leaving time by Jodi Picoult[/b. I'm enjoying it. Wouldn't say I love it but very interested in the info on Elephants if this info is true. I did finish The Husband's Secret which was another I really enjoyed, but didn't absolutely love. Up next is Call The Midwife trilogy.

I absolutely loved Leaving Time but then again, I was obsessed with elephants as a kid. My sister read the book and didn't love all the facts but knew I would. Currently, I am reading All the Light you Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. I too am having a hard time getting into the book, but I really need to buckle down and try to read it. Today, I went to Half Price books and found a new YA Adult book to read. I love that store and could just sit in it for hours and look around

I read a collection of Miss Marple stories by Agatha Christie, always fun, and I just finished All I Know and Love by Judith Frank, which was excellent, about a gay couple who end up getting custody of the one partner's brother's children after a terrorist bombing.
I got some Josephine Tey mysteries for Christmas, so right now I'm reading Miss Pym Disposes.

I just gave my father that book for Christmas. We are a family of readers. Often for holidays we give each other books. I saw this book at Barnes and Noble, read the back and cover, and a couple of pages. It looked very intriguing, and like something he would like. I didn't realize it was one of Amazon's Top Reads for 2014. We both like history and especially survival stories. I've already planned to borrow it once he's read it . We do that all the time in my family-my father, mother, sister and I. Trade books back and forth and then discuss them. Sometimes DH joins in. I'm really glad to hear how much you liked this book, especially that you couldn't put it down-that's a very good sign. Debbie in MD.

I finished Bird in Hand. Several here read it and gave it pretty good reviews. I liked it but it was not my favorite read. Now I am reading We Were Liars. It's a short book and it's keeping my interest. I read her book "The Way Life Should Be" this fall and really enjoyed it. I checked my bookshelves and have another of her novels but I can't remember which right now. I'd love to hear your review of Bird in Hand when you're done. We Were Liars is on my To Read list as well. I'm reading "Bookends" by Jane Green, another older one from my bookshelf. I recently enjoyed Green's "Tempting Fate" and wanted another quick easy read. Prior to this was "Wild" which, in combination with seeing the movie, was very emotional (I also lost a parent in my 20s) and I needed a break

I've just finished Love Rosie by Cecelia Ahern. I thought it was a great girl read. 5/5. This is one of my favorite books. I'll read it from time to time, nothing deep, but a fun read. Me, too. I have a paperback copy I've read several times over the years. My copy is so old, it's called "Rosie Dunne", LOL. I recently listened to "Love, Rosie" on CD and that was fun, with all the cool accents

I loaned it to so many people it was probably in similar shape to yours, but alas it never got returned along the way so now I have it on my kindle. I think the movie was supposed to be released this year. There are a few trailers that are on YouTube that make me laugh, hope it eventually gets released.

Just finished after reading it all day yesterday and most of today the book 'All the Light you Cannot See'.
Wow. An amazing book with characters you fall in love with. I so wanted to finish it but on the other hand am sad that I did. Definitely one of the top books I've ever read.
