detail or closure of the characters? It sort of ticks me off that I invested my time to get no ending....

Absolutely! I just finished a book and it was almost like the author wrapped up what should have been a whole other chapter in one small paragraph! It left me feeling very unsatiated!

ETA: It almost felt like the author said "Stuff this, I'm bored with this book, time to wrap it up....."

Hate that! I don't need a silly epilogue like I felt the last Harry Potter book had, just give me a complete ending!

I hate it when I fall in love with the characters and even though the story is finished, I want it to go on forever. I want to know what they had for breakfast and how was their day at work and who did they chat with. I want to be their friend.

What book currently is irritating you? The List... It's teen lit. Spoiler below is not a complete spoiler... It ended abruptly without giving really any detail about what happened to one of the characters after the event the author had been building to throughout the book. In fact, there are 2 characters that I feel like weren't wrapped up. Probably more.

Are you sure the author isn't gearing up to make the book a series? I really hate that and it seems especially popular with teen lit.

Yes!!! Sometimes you wait 400 pages for the ending and the ending is a paragraph long. And you're thinking "Really? I couldn't even have one full page?".

I want to know what they had for breakfast and how was their day at work and who did they chat with. I want to be their friend. That's what I love about Karen Kingsbury's Baxter family books. It started as a 4 book series. Then she added a few more 4 book series. All of her readers fell in love with this family of characters. The later series might focus on friends of the family or long lost family members but there are always enough cameos to satisfy faithful readers.

That is how I felt with Gone Girl....I was beyond ticked YES! I was reading on my Nook last night and told DH, "Hold on, I have about 10 more pages left in this book" ... turned the page and it was over. I might have muttered a few nasty things out loud while heading for bed. Talk about a complete let down IMO.

Has anyone read The One by David Nicholls? It was turned into a movie with Anne Hathaway, but I no longer want to see it now! I ended up rating it 4 out of 5 stars on GoodReads, but in my short review I said that I simultaneously loved and hated the book.

Yes this!! The book ends and you just want to know more!! The J.D. Robb books are like that for me.

I really like Dean Koontz, but I feel like most of his books end like that. I've invested all this time hating and fearing this horrifically evil villain, and then instead of some epic showdown where the fiend gets what's coming to him....he dies of an infected toenail or something. No, of course I'm being silly but seriously the endings are often not much less anti-climatic than that.

I was also going to say, Gone Girl! I fought really hard in the beginning of the book, to keep reading....I was finally really into it, and blammo! It ends..... Just like that!

I get the expression when this happens, that the author ran out of steam, and struggled to hit the deadline, so dashed something off quickly. Gone Girl and The Anniversary Man are two examples that immediately spring to mind.

I read a lot of crimebooks, and I recently read one that made me feel like that. The police knows who the killer is, killer has a hostage, police is on their way... gearing up for the big shoot out right? Nope, it basically goes from the police in their cars on the way to catch the killer and it cuts to the emergencyroom after the shoot out happened. I seriously had to check the numbers on the pages because I thought they had left about 10 out of my copy of the book. The book was highly enjoyable, but the end really ticked me off! Like the author just decided he was to tired to finish it properly

For the most part I feel like this too...you are so invested in the characters that you want to believe they are still out there somewhere and carrying on with their lives.
I can only accept an abrupt ending if it fits with the plot and theme of the book. Do you know what I mean? For example, I just read "The Dog Stars" and although the ending leaves you hanging, it works because the book has a post apocalyptic setting. It felt right in this book.

Add me to that list! As soon as I read the thread title, Gone Girl popped into my head. I hated the ending, and I hated that there were one or two story lines that just got "dropped" and didn't end at all. I too finished the book and said to myself, "wtf?"

I felt this way about Eleanor & Park. I was looking forward to some resolution in this book, and then it just sort of ended.

I agree about Gone Girl, ugh. I just finished The Night Strangers by Chris Bohjalian and felt that way about it, too.
