I bought my boys duvets and just yesterday received the duvet covers I ordered online. The covers have ties on the inside corners, which I assume are to keep the duvet from shifting around inside, but what am I supposed to tie them to? There are no ties or holes on the duvet itself...am I supposed to sew something on or do they sell special duvets for this?
I have a king-sized duvet on my bed and over the years I've tried different clips to keep it from shifting, but I just gave up on those and generally just shake the duvet around until its where I need it to be.

You tie the corner of the comforter to the duvet cover. That will keep it from getting twisted in the cover. some times the bottom corners have them too.

I've had duvets that came with ties on corners. Mostly I've sewn ribbons onto existing duvets so I could tie them. It helps keep things neat.

I just pin the ties to the duvet.

So you mean you just grab a corner of the duvet and tie it down really tight and that's enough to keep it from shifting? I would think it would just pull out, but maybe it is that simple. I'll definitely give it a try!

That's worth a try. My experience is to knot or bow the ribbon (or tie) on the duvet to the one in the cover. The duvet is then anchored at corners and perimeter to its cover and doesn't shift around as much. Not a necessity, helps keep things neat.

That's what I do - I just grab a corner of the comforter, give it a little twist, and tie the ties around the corner. It stays pretty well... I've only had it come untied a couple of times (maybe three times in the ten years I've been tying them?)

Having a German mother we've been using duvets in our house ever since I was a small child, and I'm 54 years old. We used to have my Oma (grandmother) who still lived in Germany, send us duvet covers in the mail because they weren't available here in the USA. We never once used the ties inside the covers, or any other kind of device to hold the duvet inside the cover. I still don't even though nowadays I do buy my duvet covers here in the USA. My current cover came from LLBean and does have the ties inside the cover. I was baffled first time I put it on thinking, "What the heck are these for?"
I simply put the cover on over the duvet (which by the way, we always called a featherbed, and it was always used on top of us as a cover (a duvet) never underneath us), and to get is centered every morning when making the bed you simply grab the bottom of the cover, along with the bottom of the duvet and shake it out a few times. It settles nicely and becomes centered again. Don't really have a problem of it sliding around.
