Last Saturday I cut my finger badly with a razor blade. It was very deep. My gut told me it needed stitches, but I ignored that thought. We have a huge medical bill from my rabies vaccine, and I didn't want to upset dh.
A week later the cut is healed on the bottom of the cut, but the top 1-1.5 mm is still not closing. I have kept it covered with neosporin on it all week. The top edges of the skin seem "dry and dead." Should I snip those edges off? Any suggestions on how to get it to close?

You could try butterfly bandages. If you have a first-aid kit around, there actually might be some in there. THey look like this. Or superglue. ETA: it's possible that the damaged layer has healed/closed. I don't know how to explain it. My thumb sometimes splits in winter, and after the painful bleeding layer heals, I am left with a split that doesn't hurt and looks dead/dry. I do eventually have to cut it off (it snags on things). Then it grows back in. Of course, YMMV. You might ask your pharmacist if they have a recommendation. The worst they'll say is, "You should ask your doctor."

Go to the pharmacy and get 3M Nexcare steri-strips Cut to the length you need put across the cut and as you are doing so hold cut together so that it is closed. then put a regular bandaid over it. you might need 2 or 3 pieces. I have cut my fingers many times when I was cutting hair. After going to the hospital many times I found them and keep a box in the cabinet at all times. They work great. the wound needs to be kept dry. change the strips every few days.
Good luck.

I swear to you I did the exact same thing last Sunday! It's not healing and it hurts. Someone told me to superglue it but I'm not sure that's a good idea.

Superglue! Clean it well. Dry it. Apply superglue. I like the bottle with a small brush. The glue will wear off on its own. Usually by then it will be healed. Way easier than trying to keep bandaids dry. Germs are keptnout.

Try neosporin and pull closed with steri strips or even just a bandaid pulled tight but not too tight. Use more than one if needed. Keep it constantly covered. Don't wash it, don't get it wet unless you absolutely have to. Tape a glove on your hand at the wrist for bathing. Get finger condoms for washing hands or just keep the finger out of the water. Change the bandaid each night. I have done this a few times over the years with cuts on fingers. They heal with very faint scars.

Finger cots will help a lot. DS constantly has huge gashes on his fingers from dunking the basketball. We find they heal a lot faster when he uses "coaches condoms" (his coach is a little pr*ck).

I would just keep it clean and stop the Neosporin. it also needs to be dry, so go with those suggestions. does it hurt when it is aired out? that might be good for a little while.

Nu-skin will hold it together, too. Like superglue, but sold by the band-aids, so in my mind, would be more sterile.

I got new steak knives about a week ago and sure enough, cut my fingertip getting one out of the pkg. It still hurts and as of yesterday, was still bleeding from time to time. I'll have to try some of these tips.
I hope yours heals soon.

Sounds so painful!
I have 2 cracks on the sides of my thumb, near the nail, that are from dry skin. They do not heal! I have to keep a bandaid on them and Neosporin for at least a week before they even come close to healing. It's hard when it's on your hand, because it's hard to do things. I can't open anything, can't text, etc. I can't wait until it gets warm in a couple months so I don't look like I have major stitches on my thumb!

I've done the same thing and I have used the Nuskin liquid bandage. Works well!

Give it more time.... I have knuckles that split open from dry skin on my index fingers and middle finger. It takes a long time to get them to heal back together. The one on my right hand finger is really deep right now and it's been at least 2 weeks and it's still not healed up. All the hand washing and dish washing... it doesn't help any. This weekend I decided to put A&D ointment in there to see if I can get it to heal up. Yesterday I banged it again getting the groceries from the car and the bleeding started over again.
The deeper it is the more layers that have to work back to normal. I also think the winter months slow the healing down too.

Oh man... I have a few deep scars from incidents like these. I used to bleed profusely and finally realized that it was due to tons of caffeine in my system. Make sure you're not having too many things that thin your blood like caffeine, etc... That really made a difference with bleeding and healing for me. Hope you heal and feel better!

Most likely it's healed and the top will just peel. Wouldn't concern me unless it was infected.
