I have always hated oatmeal. I wanted to like it so badly but I couldn't ever get past the first three bites. Even steel-cut oats didn't do it. Something about the porridge texture just gave me the willies. I know it's good for me and helps with your cholesterol and all that jazz but I just couldn't do it. Until.... I was cruising pinterest and found a baked version of steel cut oatmeal that didn't look at all porridge-like in the picture. It looked more like baked brown rice. Grains instead of goop. I was looking for a make-ahead breakfast for my husband who really needs to eat something before he goes to work. Wonder of wonders, this baked version is delicious. I experimented over the weekend with different ingredients. Made three pans, cooled them, cut it into squares, and wrapped them up. Left some in the fridge for breakfast this week and froze the other ones. This is a massive Pinterest success. Basic recipe: Baked Steel Cut Oatmeal I used lowfat milk instead of whole milk because I never have whole milk in the house. Combos we tried: Basic recipe with Trader Joe's Golden Berry Blend and chopped toasted pecans. I use pecans in almost everything that calls for nuts because we have nine pecan trees and pecans are always free and readily available to me. But any nuts should be good. This was really good but higher in points for me because nuts and raisins are really pointy if you're following weight watchers. Still an 1/8 of the dish was seven points and was very filling. Basic recipe with chopped apples, honey instead of maple, no nuts. I ate this for breakfast this morning. It was terrific and only five points because no nuts. Basic recipe with chopped strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries. Honey instead of maple syrup, without nuts. I only tasted a spoon of this but it tasted pretty good. Am having this version for breakfast tomorrow. Also five points. So this lifelong oatmeal hater has found a way to eat oatmeal. Never thought it could happen.

Interesting. Your reaction to oatmeal has been the same as mine- want to like it, can't eat more than three bites... I'll have to look I to this. Thanks!

Hmmm, maybe I will try it, maybe I won't . It has always reminded me of baby food.

I hated oatmeal growing up and just haven't been able to get past the childhood gagging to try it as an adult. DH loves it and makes it regularly on the weekend. These sound perfect for his early morning, breakfast on the run weekdays and I will give them a try.

Thanks for sharing. I could never get past the texture of oatmeal - always seems slimy to me. I will definitely be trying the baked.

Thanks for sharing. I could never get past the texture of oatmeal - always seems slimy to me. I will definitely be trying the baked. Not slimy. This cuts into squares once it's cooled off some. When it's fresh out of the oven it isn't as firm but once it cools a bit the texture firms up and you can cut slices or portions. I made one in a ceramic deep dish pie pan and the other two versions in rectangular baking dishes. They slice. Not slimy or mushy or gross at all. This is a pic from the author's blog:

*raises hand* I can not stand it. Not one little tiny bit. The texture gives me the shimmy shakes. My son, on the other hand, loves the stuff. He would eat it every morning for breakfast and it was all I could do to watch him eat. I know it is good for me, but other than oatmeal cookies, there is no way I am touching the stuff.

I'll only eat Quaker instant maple and brown sugar made with hot water from the tap. I will not touch anything else. Now, grits in the other hand...

Do you eat it cold or reheat it? I like it better heated up. It's ok cold but I like it better either fresh out of the oven or microwaved for about one minute.

I'm not a hater, but not a big fan of oatmeal. It seems to sit so heavy in my stomach no matter how little I eat. So I prefer cream of wheat

I have eaten it when there was nothing else in the house to eat. I made instant and added about 3 tbsp of brown sugar to it. I swallowed it and drank a lot of water afterwards to get rid of the taste very quickly. Yuckyity yuck!

I'm not a big fan, though I eat it from time to time because it is so filling. I overcook it - I want most of the water cooked out, and I won't eat it if there is a water puddle anywhere around the oatmeal.

I don't hate oatmeal (though it took me a while to figure out the right combination of add-ins to make it palatable), but I'm glad I opened this thread because this recipe looks really good. I'd love to be able to make a few days' worth of breakfast in advance and I think this would be a lot tastier than reheated regular or steel cut oats.

Me, my hand is up and waving. And I do enjoy other hot cereals. When I ate it as a child I'd get queasy feeling afterward. So I eat my oatmeal in cookies!

I really do not like oatmeal - the taste or the texture. I only like oatmeal in cookies. Your dish looks like something I might like, but I am low carb now. The great thing about being low carb is not having to feel guilty about not eating oatmeal for your health.

I can't get past the feel of oatmeal in my mouth. It reminds me of throwing up milk, same exact texture. No way I plan to experiment with it to make it palatable. I'll stick with eggs in the morning.

I only like my oatmeal in a cookie or on top of baked good as in a crumble. TFS - I might have to try this.
