My granddaughter just turned one, and on Friday evening she had a seizure. No warning, she was happy as can be, then she started with strange mouth motions (a mix between chewing and kissing) followed by jerky movements of her whole body. She couldn't stand or walk properly (she's been walking for a couple of months), looked like she was drunk.
We had her at urgent care within 15 minutes, and she was sent from there to the closest ER by ambulance. By the time she arrived the seizure was over. I'd estimate it took 45 minutes for her movement to return to normal.
At the ER she had blood work done, a CT scan, urine testing and a chest x-ray. Everything was clear. Mom was told to contact a pediatric neurologist today for follow-up.
The cause of the seizure is unclear. She had been sick with a virus for about a week. Febrile seizure is possible (even though she had a very low to no fever), as is a seizure caused by the virus. However there is a family history of epilepsy (myself) so this is a possibility too.
My question is: how long should it take her to return to her normal self? Since Friday she is clingy, frequently unhappy, not eating or drinking well, not sleeping well and has frequent screaming sessions that sound different (very high pitched). Prior to this she was so happy, and was almost at a point of sleeping through the night. I don't know whether to think she's still recovering from the seizure; whether there is some other underlying problem; or whether she is still stressed out by all the testing.
Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I had a few febrile seizures between 1 & 3 yrs of age due to fever. I was just talking to my mom about this & she said that I was fine about a week after it happened. I am now 44 and have never had any seizures since then, but we don't have epilepsy running in our family.

The neuro will request an eeg, which will reveal any other seizure activity. He might even request an ambulatory eeg where she wears the leads for a day or two while at home. My son had a few of these which revealed a lot more sz activity than what would show physically. As a baby, it took him quite a while to get back to normal after a large seizure. Now he bounces back within a day. Good luck, I hope it was just a one time thing.

Thank you, ladies; sounds like we're still within the normal period for recovery.
Her appointment with the neurologist isn't until May 11th. In the meantime if she has any more seizures she'll probably be admitted. Hopefully this will be an isolated incident.
She seems better today than yesterday, more cheerful. Hopefully no more of those dreadful crying spells; we'll see.

Oh, I'm so sorry.
My dd had seizures due to diabetic low blood sugar as a toddler. With immediate treatment, she recovered quickly so I'm absolutely no help with how long it may take your gd.
I just wanted to offer you big {{{{{{hugs}}}}} from one mother to another.

My son (then 3) was hospitalized in October for a totally different illness. But now, 6 months later, we are still dealing with the anxieties caused by his illness. So even if she is technically "better," some of her behavior now may be an emotional response to fear or pain or whatever that she felt.
Hugs to you and her!

If it happens again, please, please call an ambulance. They can be there fast and have what they need with them in the ambulance. Don't waste precious time!
