This came up on another board I read, and I thought it was interesting. Who have you known who was born the farthest back in time? Have you known anyone who was born before the twentieth century?
For instance, my first thought was my grandfather who was born in 1903, but then I remembered that I also knew my great-grandparents, who were born in 1884 and 1886 respectively. I have pictures of myself with them as a small child. So I can go back 131 years, to my great-grandfather's birth.
How far back can you go? You have to have known or met the person, but they don't have to still be living today.
ETA: And pictures would be awesome! I'll see if I can track down the ones of my with my great-grandparents.

My great-grandmother was born in 1898 and I did see her several times. She passed away in 1982.

1896 paternal grandfather
Eta. I think there is one older. She would have been my great aunt on dad's side (his mom's oldest sister of 10) I think she was 104 when she died. she must have been born around 1880.

I knew one set of great grandparents, but I can't remember what year they were born. It would have been late 1880s or 1890s.
Some of the older Peas would be able to go much further back than that. I've seen posts where Peas parents were born the same year as my grandparents.
These are the only photos I have:
This is my grandpa (driving the tractor), one of my uncles (the little boy) and I think one of the other men is my great grandpa. This would have been taken in the early 1950s.
And this one is Pa, my great grandfather. This was probably taken in the 1970s and is how I remember Pa.
My mum has all the really old photos, I must borrow then to scan one day.

My grandparents were married in 1918. I lived with them before I got married. Gramps died at 70yr and Grandma was 85 yrs old.
My other grandparents were married in 1916, my grandpa died in the war and grandma was 84 yrs old and before I had children.
I have a picture of Grandma with me & my dad and my dc.
Edited to add: I have the 'gift' of having the family legacy on both sides, dad's from 1700's (and a relative is still keeping it up in Germany) and my mom's side, also from about 1700's until present. My mom's family had a documentary done in part with the Mennonite Heritage (stuff is in the new museum in Winnipeg) & CBC in 2006. Very interesting documentary. No, I will not share names or information. All cousins, aunts, uncles & the rest are accounted for and not on this board.

My great-grandmother died in 1976 and she was 83 years old. That means she was born in 1893. I was 11 when she died.

My great-grandmother was born in 1894. She died in 2002, just a couple of weeks short of her 108th birthday. When she was young she was hired as a nanny by a man that had lost his wife (I believe during childbirth) and helped him to raise his young children. He was MUCH older than her and they eventually married and had more children together (my grandfather being one of those). Through research some years later we learned that her husband had fought in the Civil War.

My husband's grandmother, Myrtle, was born in 1882. We used to stop at her house everyday after school to check on her. One time she had left something on the stove and, though there wasn't a fire *yet*, the house was filled with smoke. I was so glad nothing worse happened. She died in 1976. Here is a photo of her with my husband and his siblings. He is on her right, so around 1955. Janet

I know I had a great great aunt (my grandmother's aunt), who was 100 sometime around 1982-83. I remember going to her birthday party, and I was only 7-8 years old myself. That would have her born in 1882-83. But I know she had a sister that died only a year or two ahead of her, who was also 100, but I don't 'remember' meeting her, although I'm sure I did. I know I was around these women a lot when I was very little.

My Great Grandmother was born in 1882. I was 21 when she died. My Great Great Aunt (sister of Great Grandmother) was born in 1887. I was almost 19 when she died. So, I definitely knew them. We all lived in the same town so saw each other many times during the year. I also knew my Great Great Uncle who was married to the aunt above but I am not sure what year he was born. Definitely in the 1870's or 1880's. I knew him. He died when I was very young but I remember going to his house as a young child and running up the stairs to see Uncle Sidney. He was in a wheel chair and sick by then so he didn't come downstairs much. They had an elevator installed in their house so he could go up and down. We loved playing in the elevator as kids.
I also "knew" my maternal Great Grandmother who was born in 1879 but I was a baby when she died and I don't remember her. I have a picture of her holding me though.
My Grandfather on my dads side was born in 1895. He died a few days after my 19th birthday. I knew him very well.

Here is one of the few (VERY few) situations where it helps that I'm old! The person I knew who was born the earliest was my grandma Ida, who was born in 1879 and died in 1974 at almost 95 years of age. She and her family immigrated to this country in 1890.
The oldest people that I knew personally were my mother-in-law, who was born in 1912 and died in 2011 at almost 99 years of age, and her gentleman friend, who died 2 years earlier at 101 years.

My maternal grandfather was born in 1887. He was older than my grandmother. She was born in 1902. My paternal grandmother was born in 1895. (I never knew my paternal grandfather. He died 2 weeks before my parents wedding day.)
ETA: I forgot about my maternal step-grandfather (my grandmother's third husband). He was born in 1883. I thought he was my real grandfather until after he died and one day my mother's father showed up and my grandmother introduced him as my grandfather. Ummm, what?

My great grandma was born in 1888. She lived about a block from the church we attended, so we visited her after Mass almost every Sunday. She died when I was 11 or 12.

My grandmother is still living at 95 years old. I knew, and remember well, her mother. She would have been born in the 1880s.
eta: I found a photo of her tombstone. It says she was born in 1881.

My great-grandpa was born in 1993, and passed away when I was a Senior in high school. He was just a few weeks shy of his 102nd birthday. I saw him almost daily, and he was a big part of my life growing up. He was in fantastic health... He lived alone, and didn't even use a cane until after he turned 100! It was always very interesting to hear him tell stories of when he was growing up... Things like him and his friends taking apart a teacher's wagon and putting it back together on the roof of the school. He saw the invention of the airplane and car. He lived through the Great Depression and both world wars. I wonder what he would think about the internet!

I knew 2 of my great grandfathers born in 1860 and 1865. My grandpa born in 1873 lived with us as I was growing up. My in-laws were born in 1905 & 1906.

All four of my grandparents were born before the turn of the 20th century.. 1882, 1885, 1893 and 1894 and all eight of my great-grandparents were deceased by the time I was born.

Both of my grandmothers were born in 1900. I spent a lot of time with both of them while I was growing up and heard many wonderful stories about their childhoods.

My great-grandmother was born in 1893, and it is easy for me to remember because my oldest DD was born on her birthday exactly 100 years later. I'm not sure what year my great grandfather was born, but I know he was more than 10 years older than her. He died when I was pretty young (about 5 I think), and I would say he would have to be the farthest back I could go to 1883 or earlier.

The oldest person I have ever known was my great grandfather or dziadziu (we pronounced it jaja) who was born in the 1880. He used to come over on Sundays after church and we'd listen to polka music on the radio. This would have been in the early 1960's. He died in 1968.

The summer I was 16 I was lifeguarding at a pool and there was an old guy named Izzy who hung out there playing cards every day. He was 90 at the time, so was born in 1892. He was a funny, slightly dirty, old man.
