We (well, I) are purging right now. I found what makes it easier is to do large "collections" in stages.
So, for example, let's say I have a collection of egg beaters. I do not tell myself that today I will go through all my egg beaters and get rid of all but 1 or 2. Instead, i tell myself that today I will get rid of the egg beaters that I know I can live without. Then tomorrow, I will move on to the next layer of t hem, and so on. I find that when I do it that way I don't get overwhelmed and it becomes easier and easier to pare stuff down to the most important items.
