We have been using the Finish ones with the powerball. The main part does not have any coating. I'm not sure about the powerball in the middle, but I don't think so. So we get all of the convenience, without the worry of the coating. We use the Finish ones too, and haven't ever had a problem. When we got our dishwasher, the manufacturer included a sample of them and we've used them ever since.

Regarding those flushable wipes, our city sends out a newsletter an in the last one they requested residents not flush them because they cause problems with the liftstations.

I never did like the idea of the pods. Thanks for confirming my fears.
We use the Finish tabs here and love the results we get with them.

They just seem like a bad idea to me. I have a septic system that's giving me fits right now. (yay $6k) I'm big on not introducing things into my waste water that I'm not sure what's going to happen to it. I used those compressed finish ones with the little red ball. So far so good. Another vote for the Finish tablets.

Dang! I love those things! I find they clean better than the powder. And I even bought a little container for them. It's ceramic and looks like a chinese takeout box. Looks so cute sitting on my counter. Guess I'll be trying Kirkland's liquid next time I go to Costco.

I have an old Pfaltzgraff bowl I bought in the 80s that I put my finish tabs in (the kind with the wrapper). When I first started using it dh thought it had candy in it. Luckily I was standing there when he went to grab one. lol

Oh great. Another great invention that ultimately sucks. but those pods are so darn convenient! Sorry about your awful bill and repair. I suppose flushable wipes are like another carrot dangling in our faces, just to be snatched away with evil dude saying "Ha! Not for you!" We got our septic tank pumped 2 summers ago. First time in years and years-my husband has always insisted it's not necessary as long as the tank is "healthy". He was wrong (and admits it now). They found a big wad of "flushable" wipes almost blocking the drain. My kids are 19, 17 and 16. It's been a LONG time since we've flushed a flushable wipe which means they stick around. For years. The only reason we had the tank pumped is because we had a new house put up on our property and we had to get it pumped and inspected to get the permit. If it wasn't for that, we'd be on the verge of a big septic problem. Wow. Thought those flushable wipes were supposed to disintegrate away too. They weren't around when we lived in place with a septic system otherwise we'd probably have an issue with that too. Hopefully not going to be a problem living in urbanville...

Hmm.....It must relate to your water or water temperature.
I just ran the water to get it good and hot, dropped a Finish pod into a 2 cup container, filled it with hot water and then stirred it a few minutes. The gel covering totally dissolved for me.
I guess we should test the conditions in our house before rushing to judgment. Apparently "your results may vary."

I've heard the same thing - stay away from the plastic coating.
We use the finish ones that you have to unwrap, so no coating.
Paige.

Haven't had a problem yet. I know that it takes forever to get hot water in the kitchen. I would hate to have to run the water until it is hot before running the dw. I didn't have good luck with the finish tabs and hated unwrapping them. New house and different dw so maybe I will try them. Maybe I will go back and forth. Same with the washing machine. I have a lot of both types of the pods so I can't just switch but maybe a little of both until I go back to the regular detergents.

Aw man that sucks! I just bought a new container of them yesterday because I was out. I haven't had any issues yet -- fingers crossed that will continue to be the case through this new carton I just got, then I will switch. Sorry that happened to you!

I suppose flushable wipes are like another carrot dangling in our faces, just to be snatched away with evil dude saying "Ha! Not for you!" As a plumber said to me, if they were meant to dissolve on flushing, they would have already dissolved in the bag they came in. The woman in the flat above my shop flushes baby wipes down the loo. They cause a blockage in the sewers - which just so happen to run beneath the floor of the shop - and the stench when the pipe blocks up is unbelievable.

huh, I wonder for those that had the clogged lines, what brand of pod you were using? Cascade? Finish? Generic from sams, costco or Target? We use the cascade ones, and have never had any issues with them. ever. My hubby took our dishwasher completely apart last year to clean the bottom out, clean hoses and filters ( long story, he did it to his parents cause they were having issues, Saw how gross theirs was and assumed ours must be that way too) and he did not find any left over pod particles stuck on anything. So I think we are ok. We have been using them for at least 4 or 5 yrs now maybe even longer, I can not remember ever using liquid in this house ( that is what I bought before the pods, not powder) and we have been here almost 7 yrs.

Thanks for the PSA. I've been using the Quantum pods and am almost out. I find they do a great job, but don't want an issue down the road. I think I'll go back to the Finish tablets and try those again. I did find they weren't completely dissolving, but that was with my previous dishwasher. I'll give them a try with this one.
I stopped using the laundry pods a couple of years ago when I heard stories about them leaving marks on clothing.

But why would they dissolve in the bag if they aren't wet? I read the bag for Cascade dishwasher pod thingies; it says they dissolve completely in water. No blockage problem here so far. It also says safe for septic systems.
eta: oops, I meant dishwasher tabs dissolving in bag, not bathroom wipes. Guess that should be true.
Now baby wipes, those are not meant to be flushed. Ewww, how horrible to have someone like that above you.
There must be different types of materials made for the dishwasher things. I had some of the Finish tabs not dissolve completely either in our last machine.

Hmmm, I've been blaming a recurring clog downline on an old shrub. I wonder if it's the pods? DH uses a snake to push through obstruction. It's not far away from the main...
We've got an almost full container of Cascade pods. I chopped down the shrub last week, we'll see what happens...

The wipes are a huge no no. There was an articles where New York City and other large cities are experiencing infrastructure problems due to the wipes. Do not use in a septic tank ever (wife of a plumber) and we cautioned our daughters not to flush them at their house either. House to street repairs can be very expensive.
I will stop using the pods and go back to tabs in dishwasher. I never used them in washing machine as I generally do small loads with 2 of us and DH wears uniforms.

I used to use the gel pods in my dishwasher. But I stopped when I realized that the mysterious chunks of plastic I was having to dig out of the water holes on the spinny things in the dishwasher were part of those pods. I was seriously pissed. We use Finish tabs now. No pouches, just a super concentrated square of powder. No issues. Eta, I was using the Cascade pouches

We were using the Finnish, but I just noticed that our most recent pack is Cascade. We've been having dripping, too.
Our water takes forever to heat up.
I'm going to buy the Finnish tabs and see if our dishwasher stops backing up. The thing has a commercial grade food disposal on it, but we don't load dishes that are that dirty.
When we first moved into a 1905 Craftsman Bungalow that had a only a 6 inch sewer pipe that connected to the city sewer system, the whole house backed up about 2 weeks after we moved in.
I was standing in the basement with the plumber and the house owner (she was really nasty) as the plumber started pulling out these HUGE maxi pads one after another. The house owner is looking at me more and more disgustedly. Then the plumber says, how could ONE woman back up a whole house in 2 weeks?
I then informed them that I was in early menopause and hadn't had a period in a year, didn't use pads, and definitely didn't flush them. It was so embarrassing, but not as embarrassing as them thinking I was so stupid I flushed pads bigger than newborn diapers down a 2nd floor toilet in a 100 year old house.

I just used my last one yesterday so I guess I won't be buying anymore. I liked them because my dishes came out clean and with no residue. It seemed when I was using the Cascade gel liquid, I had a white residue even with the Jet-Dri.

I'm all for PSAs, but if these products were so terribly horribly bad for ALL dishwashers and ALL plumbing, then they wouldn't be selling them at all-- companies do a lot of research before they put out a new product, and if there was nothing good about these, then they wouldn't be on the market.
This is not to discount the OP's experiences at all, but just to say think about your own situation-- your own plumbing, dishwasher, water, etc. -- before you decide to discontinue using a product you've had good results from.

Agreed. That's the only reason I posted. Thousands if not millions use these with no issue whatsoever.
