Ha! The Villages! That place has awesome written all over it. We have a group of friends (all FSU grads), and we have decided we are all going to retire at The Villages. We are going to get some amazing golf carts, have golf cart races, and just hang out and drink margaritas all day and play golf every morning. None of us even golf.

Florida in the middle of February sounds like a good idea. I have done Disney and have been to Miami (I think?) and while the nice weather in winter would be great, I think living closer to Hawaii is more for me. I found Florida too hot. The stores we went in were very nice. There is lots to do in the state between concerts and sports teams (even though I don't follow I would still attend occasionally), I honestly think the heat would kill me.

Totally, bostonmama! I read an article a while ago that STDs run rampant at The Villages.

Just curious, @bergdorfblonde, why did you move to FL, in the first place?
It seems that if having friends, family, and familiar places nearby was important to you, moving a long way away would have been a bad choice, no matter where you ended up.

I think part of the problem I have is that when you say things like this it is SO dismissive. I get that experiences are different for different people, and we don't all fit in every single area. Personally, there are parts of the states that I don't care for just because it doesn't fit my personality at all. When I say that the medical care in Florida is really good, I mean for example, you are about two hours away from the University of Florida and Shands. They are a top ranked medical school and a top ranked medical research school. People with unusual medical issues travel from all over the south travel there for medical help. I personally have an unusual and fairly rare neurological disorder, and never once, had a single issue with finding a neurologist who couldn't help me. Again, my problem isn't that you don't like it here, shoot, I am reasonably sure I wouldn't be very happy up north either. I can't stand being cold...but while it is one thing to say you aren't happy, it sure is another thing to lump an entire state into a backwoods, redneck, knocked up teenagers, too stupid to have real doctors, bug infested hell hole of dumbassery. Not true by any stretch. I am a college educated woman at a top school, my children have been able to complete for nationally ranked schools, my ex husband and father are both professionally educated and well respected in their professions, and not one single person I know has a pregnant teenager-much less one that stands on the beach smoking while watching four other toddlers. It is the broad, sweeping generalizations and prejudices that I am objecting to more than anything else. Not you right to have your own experiences. Anxiousmom: I am not going into detail, but I am so "dismissive" about medical for a VERY good reason. I have extremely rare medical issues. I was the first person in the world to have a certain procedure done to me. Only a handful of surgeons know how to deal with it. After being dismissed for 18 months by regular doctors (my PCP, "special" eye doctors, neurologists, etc.........), they all had no idea what I was talking about. I finally got one of the extreme specialists to see me, pro bono, in Tampa. So, I DID find one in Tampa (at USF) and one in Miami; that's it!!! And, that's not the end of my medical issues with that whole chronic problem. Other doctors that I have to see to finish fixing this issue just aren't in this State!! I did find one who travels from Jacksonville to Tampa, but he's only here (Tampa) 1 day every other month. Makes things very difficult. Again, you couldn't possibly understand the scope of the problem without my going into detail, but, trust me, I need specific doctors and there just aren't any here. My surgeons and doctors are all in Manhattan. While that was a trek (60-90 min trip), I knew they were there. I know this is none of my business, but if all of your surgeons and doctors are in NY, moving down here for your DH's niece doesn't make sense to me. Your health is most important.

Kymberlee STDs are huge down there...as is Swinging. I have relatives in the area, & apparently you put a pineapple in the top of your grocery cart at the market if you're 'open' to that 'lifestyle'.

Thanks for the replies! I'll catch up tomorrow when I have some time, lots to think about!
I'm ok with heat and humidity and I have an emergency mom fund set aside in case I ever need to be home quick so that's not a huge huge concern, I just don't want to be on an opposite coast. My sons grandparents are in NewPort Richey so i've spent a lot of time down there as well as the keys. My business does really well in Florida (well, anywhere it seems! lol) but thankfully I get to avoid swingers clubs and strip clubs and get to deal more with nurses, teachers, moms and cancer survivors...dodged a bullet there! My DH is my full time assistant so jobs aren't really an issue and my pay won't really go down as I expand into a new market.
We won't be making a decision for around a year most likely but i'm looking into renting a place for a week every 6 weeks to start transitioning and making sure it's really what we want to do . I can't wait to read all of your input!

Sex toy parties in The Villages would bring in millions!! There's a national geographic show with Kal Penn that quoted Orlando as having a big increase in STDs. From all the senior citizens having unprotected sex. I bet your products would do well here.

Well, I've only been to Florida once and I hated it. The Boynton Beach/ Delray/ Boca Raton area. I have no desire to ever go back. For me, the heat and humidity were the worst-- ugh (and I was just there the third weekend of May so it wasn't the middle of summer or anything). I also found the constant strip malls with the same stores over and over again to be depressing. You could see that areas were being 'improved,' it was just that they were almost all exactly the same, with the same stores, same look, and so on. Downtown Delray was interesting but unfortunately I didn't get to spend a lot of time there. I didn't find this part of Florida to be a beautiful landscape but I am not really into 'tropical' so take that with a grain of salt! If you're someone who loves that stuff you might like it. It was cool to see different kinds of birds and palm trees and little lizards around, though-- I didn't see any palmetto bugs or alligators.
One of my brothers lived in Boca Raton for about 15 years and he loved it there. He thought it was beautiful, the weather was great as far as he was concerned, he could ride his motorcycle year-round, etc. He loved to fish and would frequently go on fishing trips from the Boynton Beach Marina. Jet skiing was another thing he liked to do and of course there's plenty of ocean in that area. So for the things he liked to do it was a great choice.
My other brother lived in Delray Beach and came back up north after 12 years. He was tired of the heat and tired of the sameness of the seasons. I have a friend who moved down to the same town a few years ago and he LOVES it, for all the reasons my brother wanted to leave, lol.
So those are my very-little-experience thoughts on Florida. I think your idea of spending time in different areas s a great one; it's so true that you need to really BE someplace to know if it's really for you.

I live in upstate NY and I don't have to travel 4-6 hours to find a qualified surgeon. Of course, there are qualified surgeons all over the country. But BB said that this specific surgeon for this specific condition was in Manhattan, so it wouldn't be too hard to imagine if people would travel 4,6,8 hours or more to see this one doctor.
