I struggle with this. I am one who will stay late (school ends at 2:30) or go in early so that I do not have to bring work home with me. I absolutely do not check my email at home. I also do not check my email over the weekend. And I do not have my email "pushed" to my phone.
I try to check it once a week during the summer, usually sometime on Monday and call it a week.
Some of my friends say they don't check it at all.
I check it before a class and then starting at the beginning of August I will check every couple of days. We go back on the 11th or so.

Once a week or so. More closer towards the start of school.
I can't tell you how much my stress level rises when I log in to check it over the summer, in anticipation of the newest $hit I have to deal with.
This. I do check it, but there are days I don't for that very reason. I love the parent that emails Friday after school and needs to talk to you immediately. I'll read them, but I don't call back until Monday. I have had parents call me at home too. I think that is weird.

oh hell no, once I am off contract I am not calling back. I would not be happy with parents calling me at home

Wondering what the pea teachers do..
I'll check every day, even a couple of times a day, for the first 2-3 weeks of summer. Then I'll slow down. Come August I start getting emails from the principals and colleagues so I check frequently again.
I teach high school and I get a lot of recommendation requests throughout the summer. Plus I have personal notifications going to that email address. Insurance changes, legislative updates, etc.
I don't have my email pushed to my phone. We had to agree to security protocols if we wanted that, but my phone is bought and paid for by ME, so no way!!!
I check about once a week, usually on a weekend. That's sufficient. In the week prior to beginning, I'll be checking daily (but I'll also likely be in daily, too!).

Daily...I am the president of the Teachers' Union and even though teachers have my home email, often they use the school one. It comes to my phone so it's not a big deal

I had a private tutor call me at home once, during a tutoring session. She was shocked when I told her to not ever call me at home again. She was getting paid $40/hour to help that kid, she should earn her money. I wasn't getting paid at that time and I wasn't going to do her job for her.
The kid's mother wrote me a nasty email, copied to my principal. I didn't respond and my admin totally had my back.
At least a couple of times a week. I teach advanced level and independent study classes and many of my students need me to grade or proofread assignments during summer break. I also need to update GIEPs before the school year starts and I don't like getting bombarded in August. So while my workload is much lighter I do have things I have to stay on top of.
She is too fond of books and it has addled her brain. #394
It comes to my phone, so I'd say I "check" it a few times a day. I'm the activities director for our school, so there is a lot that I'm planning over the summer - new spirit wear, orientation activities for new students, meeting with my student officers for the next school year, setting up guest speakers, planning field trips, etc. That's on top of regular emails from the principal, secretary, counselors, etc. It's nowhere near what it is during the school year, but I definitely work during the summer.

Daily. It comes to my phone. I teach elementary, so really don't get many emails during the summer. I do check and answer emails in the evenings during the school year.
Since school just ended last Tuesday and there is still stuff going on, I've checked it every day, sometimes a couple times a day. That will slow down some over the next few weeks, and then I'll start checking again more often as we get close to the start of the new year.
My principal called me Friday afternoon and told me they are going to start moving my room early this week. I'll be going in tomorrow to deal with stuff in the cupboards and to tell them where I want stuff - and hoping I don't have to move again in 6-8 weeks, which could happen if they have to add another section of a grade level. I think it's stupid and potentially more work to move now instead of waiting until after registration, but that's not my call and he felt he had to make a decision NOW, so I'm stuck with it.
I'm not a person who has ever said "absolutely not on my time off" but the older I get the less I like to have school stuff intrude too much into my personal time off.
It comes to my phone with the rest of my email, so daily, I guess.
The concept of refusing to even answer an email or phone call outside of contract time is foreign to me. That's not how we operate here.
I have a contract which includes my summer off. If it is important, the principal or secretary will call or email my personal email. There is little that is important over the summer.

I don't refuse. I just don't. I'm a huge believer in having time to do me and be me and create an optimal work life balance, and not checking emails is how I do so.
If it is an emergency, people know how to contact me.

Most of my parents get an email or call back. I have had some very demanding parents that just don't get that service. I am at work about 90 minutes more a day than my contract hours and I respond then. Most of the emergencies are my kid forgot his homework emergencies. My boss always says that weekends are for us.
In summer, I check it because it comes with the rest of my emails on my iPad. Right now, it's important that teachers in my district are checking their emails daily because we are still negotiating this PAST years contract. We have a ratification meeting this Thursday and the number of auto replies that say the teachers are gone until August 10th is shocking. These teachers are going to miss the meeting if they don't check their emails. Then they'll bitch and complain because they didn't know. If I get an email from a parent, I won't be replying unless it's a chat chat email. I teach in a very small rural district so parents tend to be friendly with the teachers. I'm also waiting on an email from my principal telling me what I will be teaching next year. So, yeah, it's important that I check my emails thru the summer.
Pretty much daily. Our work email is essentially a gmail account, so when I'm checking my personal gmail account it's quite easy for me to just check work, too. I don't like surprises or when I have a ton of messages to catch up on, so to me, it's worth my while to check it regularly. I also check in in the evenings and on weekends during the school year.
I check it almost daily. It's no big deal if I'm at my computer. I start looking for test scores in mid June. It's less stressful to check in the summer than during the school year on the weekends.
Nope, after the first week of summer vacation I set up my school email address to display an "out of office" message. The admin knew how to get hold of me using personal contact details.

How do parents get personal phone numbers of teachers to call you at home?
I have to work 2 days after school lets out, and I have to go back two weeks before school starts. But that time in between?!?!? Nope. No way. I'm not checking anything.
I have learned that 99% of the "emergencies" aren't emergencies at all, but just people who want what they want when they want it.

My husband turns in everything and doesn't log in to school email at all through the time off. We have some tension between admin and teachers, but the contract states emergency contact only.
Last summer the principal repeatedly called us while we were at my mom's for a little getaway. To get him to bring $2.00 that a parent thought she may have overpaid on a yearbook. He took it in.....the money in the envelope was still there in August when he went back.
So, yeah, he won't be "working" at all this summer.
