I feel best when I eat vegan. I have a dairy allergy that comes and goes, and my body just really doesn't like to process a lot of meat. I don't keep vegan (although I have at various points), but I definitely feel best when I keep to plants.

my body loves a whole foods plant based diet. a vegan diet that is composed of as little processed foods as possible. for example oreos are vegan, but they aren't going to do your body nuch good, are they?
i learned about this diet by watching "forks over knives" on netflix in feburary 2014. since then i have lost 25 ponds and as of this week am back in a size 8 for the first time in 20 years. i know it doesn't sound like a lot of weight but i'm also menopausal, and hypothyroid. add those two together and it's almost impossible to lose weight. i can't even begin to tell you how incredible i feel. my energy is back.
this isn't a diet for a short term to lose weight, but rather a change of eating style for life. i encouage you to watch the video before making a decision that this isn't for you. you will be shocked by the medical information and what you will learn from the video. it has nothing to do with saving animals. this video is only about healing your body by eating the right foods, the healthy foods, and teaches you what the cuurent western american diet is doing to our bodies medically.
i thought it would be difficult to give up meat and especially cheese. i grew up with a german mother cooking meat and potatoes, and i cooked meat every night in my home. but honestly it wasn't hard at all. there are so many delicious recipes in the cookbook that i didn't even miss meat and neither did my meat loving husband who adored cheese-he was the true test. he once ate mac and cheese every day for almost a year when he was young and single!
we are both still vegan 15 months later. my cholesterol went from 229 to 187 just 3 months after starting this diet! i'm due for another full blood test but have been busy getting rorator cuff surgery on my right shoulder.
i'm sorry this has gotten so long but i wanted to leave you with this thought. any diet that you take on for a short term may lead to weight loss, but what happens when you go back to your regular way of eating? most likely all of the weight will come back. i believe to truly lose weight for good you have to change your eating style. whether that is paleo, vegatarian, vegan, or whatever, but again i encouage you to watch forks over knives for the medical information. also i also believe weight loss is 80% diet, 20% EXERCISE-because i didn't exercise at all-and yes i know that is horrible and i do plan to change.

kath and other vegans-you should take a b12 vitamin daily because the only way to get vitamin b12 naturally is from animal products which we don't consume.

My body likes an "everything in moderation" diet. I don't deprive myself of anything; I just eat very small portions of the high-carb and high sugar foods. My preference is mostly vegetarian and mostly fruits and veggies. I do enjoy fish and chicken. I'm hypoglycemic and have been forever. I feel my best when I eat 6 small meals a day. Because I tend to eat several small meals a day, I really suffer when I eat a large meal. I'll feel like crap afterwards!

[ Same here! Only been vegan for a month but am loving the increased in energy, flatter stomach and all around feeling of feeling great. I do high carb, low fat lifestyle. I try to eat raw till 4 most days and it's been pretty easy. I can eat unlimited fruits and veggies and do not have to calorie count or restrict. I also changed after watching several videos on YouTube, especially Gary Yurfosky ones. Lots of Instagram posts help with trying to figure out what to eat. I can eat ice cream (banana nice cream) for lunch and not feel guilty. I also eat oatmeal, pasta, fruits, veggies, sushi and pizza! As long as it's vegan I am good! Oh and eating 5 potatoes for lunch as fries it's also so yummy!

Definitely good advice. I have tended to step off frequently over the last 3 years or so (the derivative I mentioned in my last post) into vegetarian (eating small amounts of cheese, eggs) while keeping the rest for the most part, thus my less frequent use of supplemented vitamin B12. Unfortunately vegetarian has not been so kind on the hips, and I really need to get stay on the plant-based track instead of deviating off for vacations and eating out.

I have been counting calories in My Fitness Pal and working really hard to eat healthy foods. I am losing weight, but not as quickly as I would think on a 1200 ish calorie a day diet.
I am not sure of my thyroid, which is dead and replaced by medicine, is causing the slow loss or not. However, what matters more to me is the way I feel. I feel so good. I have even gone down two pants sizes. Yea me!
I am also doing the Bikini Body Mommy 90 day challenge.

Only low carb work for me. I have tried others and Dr. Atkins works by far the best hands down FOR ME. Anyone else it seems like Weight Watchers works well.
Good luck!

good for you! isn't it so incredibly exciting? you mentioned two things i forgot:
1. on this style of eating you can eat as much as you want. no carolie counting, no weighing food, no portion control. because the food is so nutritionally dense it fills up your stomach, and your brain signals you that you are full. this doesn't happen with food that is devoid of nutrition-like most of the processed food on our grocery store shelves-it only fills our stomaches half way full. so we either overeat and gain weight, or we force ourselves to stop and suffer because we are only half full.
yes, newsflash-we are not lazy or stuffing ourselves with no control. NOT AT ALL! It's the processed food fooling our stomachs! also the chemicals in the fast food, snack foods elicit a dopamine trigger in our brains so that's why we crave it so much. once we stop eating it for a certain amount of time those cravings disapear. i now crave fresh veggies, fruit and ice cold water as crazy as that sounds.
2. the flat stomach-i marvel at mine. i can't believe it's there! is'nt it incredible to have a flat stomach?
currently my weight is 133 and i just hit a snug size 8 this week. i actually started at 186 but made other changes-no soda, no fast food, got rid of processed foods. i was 158 pounds when i began the vegan diet.
at my age, 55, i never thought i'd see this size again. and if i sound like i'm bragging please believe it is with my best intentions that i am not. i have finally found the answer to permanent, easy weight loss that is also incredibly healthy and like to share the solution as so many of us struggle with this issue.

Cut out/down on sugar, carbs, diet stuff, stop drinking all and any sodas (I stopped drinking soda and lost 25 lbs in about 2 months)
Increase all leafy greens by 50%. And double your movement everyday.

Primal. That's basically Paleo but with dairy. I read "Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It" - by Taubes back in 2012 and it was a like a lightbulb for me with how our bodies handle bad carbs. It made so much scientific sense with plenty of research to back it all up. No more counting calories or eating low-fat chemical crap for me ever again.

I am doing 1500 calories a day, eating what I want but logging everything I eat. Today I am at 60 days and I have lost 10 lbs. I also log any walking or activity I do.
I did a calorie count diet several years ago but only did 1200 a day because I had to drop some weight pretty fast.
I have a number of health problems related to my weight so I have to get the weight off so I am in it for the long haul. My goal is 5 lbs a month until I lose 40 lbs.
I can choose to use all my calories on a pizza or I can divide it up however I want to.
A dietitian I work with recommended the 1500 cal a day and said anything less is not healthy. So it's been working for me. I use caloriecount.com

No sushi? Say it isn't so. I love sushi. I had it for dinner last night, as a matter of fact. Darn, now I am craving sushi. Off to the store for "Dynamite rolls"..... I also love sushi! I switched to getting spicy tuna sashimi on a green salad or grilled sablefish. I allow myself 1 cone sometimes, but I don't eat a couple of rolls anymore. White or brown rice - it all made me pack on the lbs.

One bit of research in particular will be great to analyze even if students get nothing else out of it. Thanks for the suggestion.

I am on the "I shouldn't eat too much chocolate because it makes me gain weight diet." I am trying to eat more healthier foods and lost 4 lbs by cutting down on the chocolate and going for fruit when I want something sweet. SO is on the "I was diagnosed w/GERD and can't eat what I used to diet." I feel bad for him. He is on a 21 day Reset diet and has lost 13 lbs so far.

I'm struggling to stick to it, but I think the nutrition plan involved with 21 day fix is good. It has a good balance of all nutrients-except sugar. . My plan is to go all in on Monday. Baseball season will be over and we can get back to more healthy eating.

ashley-- when you say low/no carb, are you only referring to starchy carbs, or no carbs at all (even from fruits, veggies, legumes)?

What I know for certain is that my body does not thrive on low carb diets. I've given it time, waited for the surge of energy that's supposed to come but no. I turn in to a total zombie on low carb. I've tried the 17 day diet and fast metabolism diet, and while I lose weight on them, do not feel healthy because of the high amount of protein. It's just not for me.
When it comes to weightloss calorie counting has been the way to success for me.
When it comes to feeling good, a pescetarian diet with clean ingredients, lots of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and plant based protein is the best diet for me personally. It resembles the meditterian diet in many ways.

I don't drink milk, or eat any yoghurt, don't eat beans or legumes. I do eat around 25-35 (net) g of carbs per day, which come from vegetables, and I do subtract the fiber in vegetables from their total carb count. Really -- I'm doing Atkins Phase 1, mostly.

I'm counting calories and it's been working slowly. I've lost 9 lbs since April 21st and I have 15 more to go. I've been 'mindful' of carbs and sweets but haven't completely cut them out. I don't have bread or other 'white' stuff with dinner anymore although I do eat potatoes. I don't snack on the yummy calorie laden stuff anymore like cookies, crackers, chips, etc. I will have dessert some times but I put the calories in my tracker. I'm not not eating sugar but I am eating a whole let less of it. I've noticed when I do have sugar and/or carbs for a few days that my stomach always looks more bloated than when I don't.
I haven't cut our carbs or sugar 100% because that's not how I want to live for the rest of my life and I'm trying to find a way to eat that I can maintain forever, not one that's temporary. I love sweets and carbs too much to never have them again so doing it this way is working for me.

I really need to lose about 20 pounds. But here's the thing. My migraines have been out of control for the last couple weeks so the Dr has said that I can't have:
Anything citrus bananas Avocados Processed deli meats pork corn onions garlic wine chocolate only 1 cup of coffee peas soft drinks and to try and cut the gluten out of my diet.
When I have a migraine I crave caffeine. After a migraine has passed I get a euphoric feeling and then start craving salt and sugar. I have got to do something to stop these cravings! Also the blood pressure meds that I take for the migraines cause you to never feel full. Big problem there.
Exercise and getting hot and sweaty can trigger a migraine for me, so I have to be careful with exercise. I loved Jazzercise but they closed down where I live. I used to love to run but I get a migraine every single time now.
I am watching this thread closely!

I eat high protein, vegetable and fruit based diet, with limited amounts of dairy and very limited grains and sugar, kind of a modified paleo. I basically eat no pasta, bread, crackers, treats or junk food except on very special or rare occasions (my own birthday or christmas for example). Even whole grains like oatmeal and quinoa cause me to gain weight. I was 40 pounds overweight all of my adult life (I am 45) and could not drop that weight no matter what I did, increasing exercise, weight watchers, calorie counting, etc... but I tried the Whole 30 after months of hip pain and the weight just fell off of me. After completing it I gradually added things back into my diet and found what worked. I lost 30 pounds very quickly following this way of eating, and the minute I have grains or sugar, I gain rapidly. Because I generally don't crave sugar unless I eat sugar, for me it has not been terribly difficult, and the difference in how I feel is well worth it for now. I would like to drop the last 10 pounds but I am within a normal weight range now, and I am able to eat without tracking calories or anything like that, so I will probably just hang out here.

I'm on day 4 of the 21 Day Fix, and even though I am not weighing myself until I'm done, I can say I feel good on it. It is basically all clean eating, whole foods, no processed anything, low salt, and small portions, combined with daily workouts. I have not felt hungry yet. This. I've tried counting calories, but then I make poor choices and use up way too many calories on junk. My body (or my mind) also needs a cheat day or two here and there without stressing about it. Maybe it means I don't drop weight as fast...but I've stuck with it since December 1st...and that wouldn't have happened if I was restrictive all the time.

Just watched forks over knives. It was interesting. I'm going to find a counter argument that has research to back it so I can comfortably show it in class. One bit of research in particular will be great to analyze even if students get nothing else out of it. Thanks for the suggestion. you're welcome. i encourage everyone to watch this entertaining incredibly important documentary. it is based on two doctors 25 years of medical research and scientific studies. you will learn things about our bodies, weight, and food today that you never knew. especially why here in the usa we have such an epidemic of obesity, and why it's steadily involving more and more of our children. most importantly what you can do about it to not only lose the weight permanently, but actually reverse and eliminate high blood pressure, diabietes 2, and other such illnesses. not to mention reduce your chance of getting heart disease-the number 1 killer in our country and some cancers-just by changing what you eat. yeah-i didn't believe it either. but watch the film-it explains it all. i think it's wonderful that you are considering showing it in class. what a fantastic idea for your students. while you probably won't be able counter argument with medical research, what about all the falsehoods we've been fed over the years like "milk does a body good", or that the only adequete protein comes from meat-without it in our diets we simply can't get enough protein. that might work. you might want to also watch it again while you prepare this-i noticed so much more the second time i watched it. debbie in md.
