I was once traveling with my husband to visit my brother, and while boarding the plane, noticed the pilot was greeting the passengers as they entered the plane. The pilot just happened to be my cousin! Unfortunately, we didn't get a free upgrade (no available seats in first class), but she publicly welcomed us over the intercom and we got free drinks! It was her last flight of the evening, so we got to have some pics taken in the cockpit and she joined my brother and us for dinner. We couldn't have planned that better if we tried!

That was me too. I kept falling asleep around 8:00 pm and waking up at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning.

What a coincidence!
We live outside Washington DC. Last spring, we were in London on a family trip, waiting outside Westminster Abbey for a bus. Who should walk by but one of DD's friends from high school (she's 16). This spring, we were at the snack bar at the Statue of Liberty and ran into a family from our scout troop. Last Christmas, I met my BFF at the airport near us when she had a layover (we live near the airport.) Who is on the people mover but a a classmate of DS from 5th grade, who had moved to Belgium. They were in the states visiting family and were flying back to Belgium.
It's a small world!

This happens to my husband all the time. He was rerouted on a flight to the Atlantic City airport. A women a couple of rows in front of him arranged to have a limo take several of them to their final destination so they could get home the same night. They all started talking where they were from and she ended up living two doors down from us (she knew me but had never met him before). Also he has run into a close friend's wife twice…once on the outgoing and inbounding flight to Pittsburgh and once on top of a bridge near our vacation home where he had a flat tire with no phone and no spare. She was riding towards him from the other direction. Perfect timing! And then once twenty years ago we were flying to London out of a different airport then we normally flight out of. In line was a good friend of his from middle school.

We were climbing down a sand dune at the Outer Banks of North Carolina and climbing up were our neighbors down the street. Neither of us knew the other was on vacation, let alone in Kitty Hawk, NC. (we lived in Alabama)

We were in an RV park in North Carolina and discovered we were parked next to someone I had worked with. We were all from Oregon.

I wonder what the chances are? I used to work with a group of 9 people and two shared the same birthday. My next-door neighbour and I share the same birthday. This made me do some googling and I learned there is a 50:50 chance that two people will share a birthday in a group of 23 people. I bet the chances of seeing someone you know ( not a specific person) on vacation are not astronomical. We shared a flight with a kid from my daughter's swimming class a few months ago and I remember running into a childhood friend when on vacation as a kid. Do we have any experts in probability on here?

Great story! But maybe the odds aren't as bad as we think, it seems like so many people have these weird encounters. My sister and I went to Europe when I graduated from High School; we were in the Louvre and we walked over to look at a statue - and she realized the guy standing next to her was a doctor she worked with at her hospital (she's a nurse.)

I live about 250 miles from my hometown in Oklahoma in a small suburb of Dallas. A few months ago my mom told me that one of my high school classmates lives in my town. I didn't think too much of it. However, one day I saw her post on our neighborhood message board. Not only does she live in my neighborhood, she lives just down the street. We had coffee together and come to find out, they tried to buy the house right next door to us that was in foreclosure, but the bank was dragging their feet.
