I am a fat girl (I weigh more than any of the weights previously listed in this thread) who enjoys doing 5Ks. Just this year a friend from work has motivated me to join her. We have done four so far this year and am getting faster and better. I DO NOT run these 5Ks. But I walk and maybe jog a bit. At this time my knees just cannot handle running on concrete.
I am not gonna lie, I was dead last on my first 5k, but I still finished in under an hour. For each 5K after that our goal was to just increase our time (and not finish dead last). We aren't going to win any awards, but we aren't going to be last. There are people of all ages, shapes, and sizes that do these things - go out and have fun. You can do it!!

I'm doing my first 5k next month! (the Bubble Run) I have a time on the treadmill of 41 mins. I'm trying to get down to 30 mins. I run pretty slow & my short legs don't help! My daughter, who is a runner said that running on pavement will be so different & my time should improve. But, that doesn't matter, I just want to have a good time & have fun! We did the Bubble Run just a few days prior to my 40th birthday. It is a lot of fun, but don't set any expectations of breaking records because the bubble pods do slow things down a lot. The course layout for our Bubble Run took 15,000 people over a footbridge and there were major delays and traffic jams. The Bubble Run isn't even timed and we went into expecting a higher time than usual.

I run much faster doing a 5k than I do on my own simply because I'm a little competitive. You can totally walk/jog and get in under an hour. Good luck!!

I walked my first 5k a couple of years ago. It was depressing. I was passed by an old man in a wheelchair (and it wasn't even a motorized one)! I did it in under an hour - I think it was 56 minutes or so. My goal is to do at least one 5k a year and lose a minute off my time in each one. My last one I was at 54 minutes. That one, my then 12 year old son who had bronchitis at the time, ran it in 26 minutes. But, it was still a success for me because I did manage to shave off another minute from the year before!

Ok I am in the car the other day, there is a woman outside running walking running. She is middle age woman sized (not fat, not skinny, not young and not old.) She ran and walked and ran and walked and it looked normal. Yes, I was judging her in my mind thinking that could be me, and it looks ok to walk and run and walk. She is out doing it. What am I doing? Driving... All I saw was a woman, probably like you, getting into shape. I did think, "Wow she must be hot" as it was over 28C (82F) outside.

You speak my language! Being passed by an old man in a wheelchair would be me! I used to have really good strength and stamina, but...whatever. You are awesome! You are! You are all sorts of awesome!

Love, love the feedback! I'm pretty pumped about the whole thing. I tend to get a bit obsessed about things and really have to hold the reins back on myself. The urge to go out and run, run, run is quite strong. Of course, that would lead to fatigue, burn-out and more than likely a significant injury. So I keep telling myself: moderation, woman, moderation!!!
