I used to... Then I learned that I was anemic. Once I got that under control, I no longer craved it.
My DH does it occasionally and it makes my teeth hurt just listening to it.

It's a classic sign of anemia... No, I don't like it as a rule, but craved it when my iron was really low. I hadn't heard that said before regarding chewing on ice and being low on iron but it fits in with something that happened recently. A few months ago my daughter suddenly started chewing on ice a lot, something she doesn't normally do....and recently she was diagnosed as being anaemic.

Another Sonic ice lover here. I would love to be able to have an ice machine like that at home.

I know my iron is low when I crave ice. It is a sure sign that my anemia needs treatment.

My iron is always on the edge of being low, but this pregnancy I crave ice ... which kind of scares me, knowing what I do about iron stores, or the lack thereof

Not cubes of it, but if there is crushed ice in my drink I will.

I used to crave it and would crunch away every chance I got. Then I found out I was severely anemic.
Now that I have that under control, I don't chew it anymore.

No! I hate the feeling of ice on my teeth. If there is ice in my glass (or cup), I will use a straw.

When I was pregnant I went through trays of ice. I love ice but hate chewing it. I love it, though. I like cold drinks but not really hot ones. I drink hot coffee, but I don't love it by any means.

No I don't particularly enjoy chewing on ice. And I HATE with the passion of a thousand suns when other people chew on ice. OMG it really gets my misphonia flaring!! It's making me all twitchy even thinking about it! (ETA: Words and phrases I've learned from the Peas..... "passion of a thousand suns", "misphonia" and "it makes me twitchy" and I've been able to incorporate them all in one sentence!)

Anyone know what causes the link between being anemic and wanting to chew ice?? From the Mayo Clinic:"Doctors use the term "pica" to describe craving and chewing substances that have no nutritional value — such as ice, clay, soil or paper. Craving and chewing ice (pagophagia) is often associated with iron deficiency anemia, although the reason is unclear. At least one study indicates that ice chewing might increase alertness in people with iron deficiency anemia."

I totally crave chewing ice when my iron levels go down. It's a craving that's completely out of my control -- I HAVE to chew ice. For me it's a sign that I need to see the doctor and get another prescription. As soon as my anemia gets better, the craving ends. Very weird.

No I don't. And I don't like to be near anyone who does - it is one of those noises that I hate. Yes, it is annoying to listen to isn't it! But thanks for the reminder. We have a long car trip coming up, and my family does everything they can to annoy me on the trip (the girls burp, pass gas, take of their shoes to reveal their smelly feet, and my husband is a "tapper"). So, I may have to get a big cup of crushed ice and chew away!
I agree that it's bad for your teeth, so I will have to get some crushed ice!

When I was severely anemic I chewed ice ALL THE TIME. I couldn't stop. If you tried to take my ice, I would have cut you. Now that I'm no longer anemic, I don't chew ice at all.

I used to crave it and would crunch away every chance I got. Then I found out I was severely anemic. Now that I have that under control, I don't chew it anymore. i was the same. I chewed ice so much I broke two ice crushers and finally bought a commercial ice shaver! I realized something was wrong when thanksgiving day came and it was 30 degrees out and everyone was eating turkey.... and all i wanted was ice. crushed ice. I could not get in my car and drive without a cup of crushed ice and a spoon. The thing about anemia is it creeps up on you. I hate ice now!

Anyone know what causes the link between being anemic and wanting to chew ice?? I'd love to know too I'm anemic and have no desire to ever chew ice, so I think my sensitivity to noise cancels out the ice chewing thing!
