Do you return the empty jars to the person who made the jam/jelly? If not, I'll just say: Please do. The cost of those jars add up! One of my friends brought back the empty and told me she was ready for a refill. PSA over........

We don't get much, but it wouldn't occur to me to return it unless it was a regular thing (a close friend or family member that made it regularly). If it was a gift or from someone I wasn't very close with, I wouldn't think to return it.
Good to know though. Our friends made apple butter as favors for their wedding & we did not return the jar. We live far away from them now though and I certainly wasn't going to save it for 3 months until we see them.

I never expect my canning jars back. When I give preserves, it is a gift, jar included.

Obviously if returning it means a package mailed or a trip cross country--don't worry about the jar. But if it is in the hands of someone you see regularly, the return of the jar would be appreciated.

I don't expect my jar back but I LOVE it if they do give it back! You are right, jars are pricey!

I would never expect anyone to give me the jars back. While I do understand they are pricey, I think it is a bit on the tacky side to expect it.

Close family and friends do, but like others have said - I consider it a gift.

I appreciate if the container comes back for anything that I gift out, but I don't expect it. I try to collect jars at thrift stores, Goodwills and things like that so I'm not feeling badly if the container isn't returned.

I don't expect the canning jars back, but I do get them back from some people and I love it. I always say that if you bring a jar back you get a free refill!

I have a friend who makes the BEST dill pickles ever. Every year she gives me 2 large mason jars of them. I return them when finished and ask her to fill em up again. I also give her any other mason jars I have collected from anywhere else, unless I know who they cam from. Bottom line I do always return them.

We never get them back. I never really thought about it. We don't give the bottles back that we receive either so I guess it all works out.

I just wish someone would make jam and give it to me! I'd happily give the jar back! I miss my Mom most when something like this comes up that reminds me of her. Every summer she made all kinds of jam for our family and friends. I never even bought jam/jelly from the store until she was not able to make it anymore. Store bought jam/jelly is not the same Its one of those treasures that has no monetary value - just lots of great memories.

We used to make the best pickles with my mom every year. Every time I smell fresh dill I think of her. I don't think my sister and I are going to be making any jam/jelly this year. My black raspberries are almost gone and the birds are trying to hog all of the blueberries this year (we don't net them). We haven't made peach jam in a few years, maybe she'll be up for that. IF SO, I'll be looking for your address to send you a jar. Sorry everyone, I can't offer it up to everyone because we'd be buying the peaches at the farmers market.

My dad cans a ton of vegetables and makes jam every summer and always sends me home with some. (His home-canned tomato juice is the best soup base ever, and his dilly beans are to die for!) So whenever I go home, I take him a box of empty jars.

Thanks eastcoastpea! Don't forget that it's IF I can talk her into it. She's in the process of redoing her kitchen (without a contractor or other pro) so it will take some time. She has triple the counter space that I have so her house is the best place to can. If not this year, I'll be aiming for the next. And, you can be sure that every time I can now I will think of you and your mom.

I don't return and I have never, ever expected someone to return them to me.
That's like giving a gift and asking for the gift bag back, IMO.

With my close friends this returning of the jars has become a fun joke. I always add a sticker to my jam jars that say "Well you know what to do when this jar is empty". I get my jars back and those friends know that something will be coming their way again in the future. It has become a crazy fun ritual. However I would NOT do this with casual or new friends.

I like to return them with something in them, even if it's just a thank-you note. One of my friends and I have traded the same green quart canning jar back and forth a dozen times over the past couple of years - it's turned into a fun game to try to put something different in it each time.

I don't demand the jar back......but since it is made of glass and should be recycled, why not recycle it back to the person who will refill it? Please don't tell me that you are putting the jars in the trash. My recycling head will explode.

I live in the middle of strawberry world and would like to know if I have bad breath or something because NO ONE has EVER given me strawberry jam/jelly/preserves. Where do I find one of those generous people??? I would give the jar back. Hell, I would buy a CASE of the jars as a thank you. My people must hate me.

Please don't tell me that you are putting the jars in the trash. My recycling head will explode. I put it in my stash of jars and reuse it. Honestly, it's never once crossed my mind to give a jar back. Nor have I ever thought someone I give pickles or jam (or whatever) to would return the jar to me. It's theirs now to do with as they like - either to reuse or to recycle.
