I never expect the jars to be returned. If they are returned by family or friends, I try to swap the empty jars with more canned goodies for them.

My DD returns jars to me "for a refill". I give her lots and lots of jam, so yes, I do appreciate getting the jars back. When I give a single jar to someone I don't expect the jar back.

I don't expect or need the jar back. That to me is like wanting a gift bag back after you give someone a present.

I don't demand the jar back......but since it is made of glass and should be recycled, why not recycle it back to the person who will refill it? Please don't tell me that you are putting the jars in the trash. My recycling head will explode. No trashing the jars. We put them in the cupboard and use them. I think we had a total of three, until last week when I made my first batch of raspberry jam. That I plan on giving a few jars of to my sister, the real canner!

Hmmm.....
It would have never occurred to me to return the jar.
I'll have to keep that in mind.

I don't return and I have never, ever expected someone to return them to me. That's like giving a gift and asking for the gift bag back, IMO.That was what I was trying to say, but couldn't put into words.

I made a ton of strawberry and blueberry jam a couple of weeks ago. I would never expect the jars back. It's a part of the gift.

We have a friend that makes homemade horseradish...it never occurred to me to give him back the jars (which I always saved) until he asked for one back once. I packed up the rest I had and gave them to him..he was grateful..I just was clueless they cost so much.
