You know how you go to do a regular mundane task like getting gas in your car? You know how you push the far left selection because its "Regular Unleaded"?
Well, this morning I go to fill up my car and thank goodness I checked. This gas station is not one I frequent, as a matter of fact I don't think I've even been to it before but it was close to my house. I could swear the Regular Unleaded is always the button on the far left? This one is on the right and had I pushed the far left I would have paid 60 cents more! (gasp!)
So, maybe I'm crazy...or maybe not. But doesn't it drive you crazy when everywhere else does things one way - and someone has to break the rules and do it another. For us getting older that need routines - not helpful!
Of course this post is a tongue in cheek post...
But in thinking about it, universalizing things would make so much sense. Don't even get me started on cell phone chargers - or any electronic device for that matter.
What else do you think needs to be universalized?

The device for swiping your credit card at my supermarket has the "enter" button at the bottom right, so I'm used to clicking on that. Then I go to a store like Target, or my hairdresser, or wherever, swipe my card, and the bottom right button is "Cancel." Very annoying that this can't be "universalized" (did you coin that word? I like it!).
p.s. While I'm griping: I dislike the use of the word "swipe" for the action of sliding a credit card past a sensor. To me, "swipe" is a slang word for "steal."

LOL...Sassy, I didn't coin the word universalized but I couldn't think of any other way to describe what I was thinking.

YES! What drives me crazy are the swipe/touch pads at check outs, they all should be the same! I am forever swiping my card wrong because some you have to have the numbers up, some down, hitting the wrong accept key because some are green, some are not, some are on the screen - I could go on!
As for the chargers - I heard from a T-Mobil rep that all chargers/cords must now be universal, like electrical cords. Any/all new phones must all charge with like cords, in fact, I believe he said that this is mandated to be in place by 2016 (?), so keep the faith! I saw it happen with me & DH new phones - completely different models (purchased within the last year) & we finally can share house & car chargers! YIPEE!
ETA: Sassy Sab. think a lot a like!

Amen on the swipe/touch pads at checkouts. And why in the hell can't they just have a "credit" button? Why do I have to press cancel to use credit (debit card without pin) every. single. time.

It makes things so much easier. I wonder how Apple will handle that since they like to be proprietary.

YES! Touch pads need to be universal! Some are much easier to read as well, depending on a glare or not.

Agreed. This is a huge pet peeve of mine. Some you have to press cancel Red. Some you have to press Green. Some the cashier has to hit some button. Also the Done button on the signature screen needs to be in the same place. Preferably on the right. It just flows better. Can't tell you how many times I've had to resign because the cancel button was on the right under the signature.

I have said this for years about the credit/debit machines at checkouts! One standard machine would make so much more sense.

Kim, That is freaky with the gas selection button. I hope that's not going to be a new trend. For me, even worse than paying the extra money would be selecting the wrong octane for my husband's car. His car is a turbo so it uses the higher octane. Neither he nor the car would like it if I put the wrong one in.
I agree with all of the posts about the charge/swipe machines. It kills me when clerks look at you like you're stupid when you accidentally slide your card the wrong way. When our grocery store got new machines they were different and we all kept screwing up for the first couple of weeks.
I also heard that chargers were going to become universal. Hallelujah to that. Less money spent and less waste in the landfills.
How about clothing sizes. Wouldn't it be heaven to go into any store and know that an 8 is an 8 and not really more like a 6 or 10? Guys clothing runs pretty true to size. I want it for my clothes too.

They weren't paying attention when they went to gas up and made it halfway through the second gas tank when they realized they had used Diesel! Yikes! Not good!

Apple is not included in the universal charger thing. So they will still be different.

I hit what I think is "enter" or whatever ("done" maybe?) and then stand there waiting for my receipt from the cashier, and then we're both standing there, then she/he will say "you need to sign" and I say "I did" and we both look at each other, and then I start over. oy.

Kim, So what happened to their RV when they used the diesel? Did they have to siphon it out and then flush it out?

YES! Touch pads need to be universal! Some are much easier to read as well, depending on a glare or not. Absolutely this! And I wish they'd figure out how to change the display or alleviate the glare permanently from the gas pumps. When the sun is shining, I can't tell if it's asking me to enter a pin, if the transaction is being authorized or even if it read the card in the first place. I've even hit cancel and headed to another pump once just so I can read the display.

However, they had to have a mechanic help with it due to the fact it had 2 tanks and the gas station where they filled up did not offer mechanic duties it had to be towed to a repair shop - extra $$$

I'm a spoiled Jersey girl who doesn't have to deal w/gas pumps, but I completely agree w/the card swipe thingie & clothes.
I also think all cars should be programmed that your headlights come on as soon as you turn on your wipers.

It used to make me feel dumb when I have to ask to make sure that I follow the correct procedure. Then I realized I wasn't the only one frustrated by it.

I always look at each gasoline choice. I am convinced that they move it around, so you'll buy the more expensive option in confusion.
The questions that the debit card machine asks: Target has a bunch, Walgreens too. Do you want to add $2 $5 $10 for WHATNOT charity? Do you want it all on this card? Is this the correct amount? What is your zip code? Why didn't you floss this morning?
I guess the old switcharoo makes us keep alert, huh?

How about when to swipe your credit card. Some places you have to wait until the end. Some places can take it right away and they look at you like you're an idiot if you waste their time waiting until the end. Some have a swipey machine, but if it's credit they have to do it. Drives me bonkers.
Why does a telephone number pad start with 1 at the top and a calculator/keyboard/ATM number pad start with 1 at the bottom?

I think it is to trick people into buying the more expensive gas by accident. Shady...

A similar thing happened to me. At the place where I usually buy petrol (sorry it's petrol here, not gas... unless of course your car is on LPG) the unleaded is the yellow handled nozzle. The other week I went to a different place and automatically picked up the yellow handled nozzle. It wasn't until I was halfway through filling my car that I noticed the yellow one was premium unleaded and I had just cost myself an extra $10 or so.

That reminds me of another one. We got new work phones the other day and of course the chargers are all different. Between work and home I have 3 different phones and all of them use different size chargers. Drives me nuts!

PS. In the spirit of universalizing spelling, it's actually "universalise"...... (In my part of the universe anyway!)

Speaking of phones: why is it that the number key pad on a phone is:
123 456 789
but the 10 key on a keyboard or calculator is opposite:
789 456 123
? ? ?
This made me insane when I worked as a bank teller. My fingers got used to the order of 10 key on the computer keyboard from running transactions all day then I would screw up phone numbers multiple times trying to dial a call.
