The device for swiping your credit card at my supermarket has the "enter" button at the bottom right, so I'm used to clicking on that. Then I go to a store like Target, or my hairdresser, or wherever, swipe my card, and the bottom right button is "Cancel." Very annoying that this can't be "universalized" (did you coin that word? I like it!). p.s. While I'm griping: I dislike the use of the word "swipe" for the action of sliding a credit card past a sensor. To me, "swipe" is a slang word for "steal." This would be so helpful. It'd save everyone some time. The cashiers won't have to answer the same questions over and over. And I don't always have to ask the question feeling like I really should know the answer.

This is going to sound really silly and probably not remotely possible. Put gas tank of all cars on the same side. For 10 years my gas tank was on the right side. I bought a new car this year and the tank is on the left. I still have to think about what side my tank is on and frequently get it wrong so I have to drive around to another pump. See, told you guys it was silly.

There is actually an arrow on your dashboard next to the gas pump icon that tells you which side your tank is on.

Amen on the swipe/touch pads at checkouts. And why in the hell can't they just have a "credit" button? Why do I have to press cancel to use credit (debit card without pin) every. single. time. Seriously! I always screw it up which means the cashier has to do something on her side to start the process over. Then I have to explain to the cashier that the reason I'm "charging" $1.09 for a fountain drink at the Circle K is because I can't be bothered to memorize the PIN for the (debit) card. Ha!

I agree with Sassy about the machines for swiping your debit card. Besides the buttons being rearranged, some allow you to swipe right at the very beginning of the transaction while others require you to wait for some magic moment which is never quite revealed to you. I would like them to all let me swipe at the very beginning so I can move on to loading my cart or making sure my kid isn't doing something dreadful.

You know, I know all about that arrow, but force of habit does the same thing to me. If it's my car, then I never look at the arrow, I just know the tank is on my side. Then I get a new car, and I still think that I don't need the arrow because I know my car, forgetting that I don't know my car so well right now.

I agree with the swipe machine - but why does it ask all the questions - Is the amount ok? Do you want cash back? I frequently say no when I don't want cash back, but end up cancelling the transaction because I say the amount isn't ok. And just when I get used to it at one store or another, they change machines!
And - the amount isn't ok. It should be less. No matter where I am or what I'm buying, I'm paying too much!!!!

Oh my gosh I never knew this. Certainly not something I would have ever noticed. I'll have to check it out next time I get in my car. Thanks.

I almost didn't open this thread, because I thought the word UNIVERSALIZE was some political term! Me too!

Speaking of phones: why is it that the number key pad on a phone is: 123 456 789 but the 10 key on a keyboard or calculator is opposite: 789 456 123 ? ? ? This made me insane when I worked as a bank teller. My fingers got used to the order of 10 key on the computer keyboard from running transactions all day then I would screw up phone numbers multiple times trying to dial a call. Hah! I was a bank teller and that never entered my mind.

I know!! What's with that?!?!
I think we tested that one day on 2 Peas and there were a lot of cars that don't have the arrow. My car (2009 model) does but DSO's car (2000 model) does not. I have also read that on the little picture of the gas tank on your car, if the nozzle is on the left then your tank is also on the left but that has also been disproven.

I bought a new car this year and the tank is on the left. I still have to think about what side my tank is on and frequently get it wrong so I have to drive around to another pump. See, told you guys it was silly. This was going to be my #1 suggestion. A few weeks ago I went to the gas station on the last day to use my gas rewards points. Everybody and their brother was there using their points as well. It was a mad house with everyone trying to maneuver their vehicles to get to an empty pump for the side that their tank is on. If all vehicles had the tank on the same side you could have one way traffic for each pump.
I also agree about the lights should automatically come on when the wipers are turned on.
Suggestion #3 is to have all windshield wipers function the same way. I had my previous car for 11 years. If I wanted to squirt washer fluid on my windshield I had to pull the turn signal handle towards me. On my new car if I do that I flash the high beams. I now have to push the end of the handle in towards the steering column. It's hard to break a long time habit.
#4 is the phone/keypad difference. As part of my job I have to call in some figures to the bank and too many times I end up entering a wrong number on the phone because I hit the button that it would be on a keypad. Grrr.

Thought of another pie-in-the-sky wish: All restaurants should have a caffeine-free diet soda option on their fountain machines.
