Last month my family went on our summer vacation. This year we chose to 'stay home' and see part of Canada we hadn't been to before. We flew to Calgary and spent two weeks driving through the Rocky Mountains out to Vancouver.
As I usually do, I filmed parts of our trip and put them together into a video highlight reel. I used my GoPro for part of it but also used a Canon 70D for part. Which camera I use for filming which part of the trip usually depends on whether I want a wide angle shot (GoPro) or some zooming capability (70D), whether or not I need a waterproof camera, as well as whatever is easiest to grab!
Hope you enjoy, and thanks for indulging me.

So many familiar places for me as I live in Calgary and I've been to Banff more times than I can count It's also too funny that you are the Cook Family because we are the Cooke Family

Looks like a lot of fun! What's a beaver tail? A beaver tail is a wonderful pastry that is unique to Canada. I like mine with maple syrup and icing sugar.
From wiki:The BeaverTails pastry is similar to several other fried dough pastries and is topped with a choice of sweet condiments and confections, such as whipped cream, banana slices, crumbled oreos, and Nutella.

Great video. You guys did a lot and seen so many great places. Yes Banff and Lake Louise are especially busy in July/August, like you said worse than Disney World. Jasper is always a bit quieter. I love going in June and September when it's still nice weather but no people around.
Were you there 3rd week in August? We were in PEI and missed out on the snow and cold in Alberta that week. I love Jasper, haven't been since the spring and am missing the mountains and turquoise waters. You must have seen lots of elk if you stayed at Pine Bungalows. There are always so many loitering around by the Wapiti campground, causing traffic jams.
Boy proof garbage can, haha! We had Beavertails in Cavendish, twice. So happy your daughter got to see a pika. True Canadians you are, going rafting when it was +6C in glacier water in the rain. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, we were there third week in August. I was expecting it to be cold but the snow did come as a bit of a shock! My personal favourite is the #9 Beavertail - Killaloe Sunrise, with cinnamon sugar and lemon juice. Yummmmmm. Beavertails are similar to doughnuts, but they are made from a whole wheat dough. So that's healthy, right?

Amazing! I've been to all of those places but your video really showed them off in the best way possible. What a great family vacation.

Fantastic video! I'm always intrigued by the Go Pro, but the thought of taking the video and editing overwhelms me. We were in the Canadian Rockies as well this year - just the week after you. We love it there, although after some of the weather we had my husband swore we aren't going back until we're retired.

Thanks so much for sharing. Would you mind telling me what hotels you stayed at in each city and if you liked them? DH and I are planning a trip just like this in a few years. Who's Amy?

I could help you with the Jasper hotels, I've stayed in quite a few of them. Between my friend and I we've probably stayed at all of them.

Your Video's are amazing! What a gift for your family to have such memories. Can I ask what did you edit these together with, I am just learning to use my iMac video software. What are you using? This is just terrific

Banff - the High Country Inn. Chose this primarily for the pool. It was great. Jasper - Pine Bungalows. Much more rustic cabin-type accommodations out of town. No tv/wifi which suited us just fine but the kids missed it. (eye roll) It was nice to stay in downtown Banff and then mix it up with an out-of-town property afterwards. It was only 5 min out of town, so not a big deal. Whistler - the Delta Whistler Village Suites. This is a condo-type property and I loved having a washer and dryer at the midway point of our trip! Vancouver - the Blue Horizon Hotel. Kind of funky place on the border of Downtown/West End. Pool was much dumpier than we expected though and did not wind up using it. I would recommend all of these places. Amy is my sister and the kids' "Cool Aunt Amy". The kids knew she was going to meet us to go whale watching but were not expecting her to also pop up in Banff!

I can't tell you how many hours I put into that movIe (and all the while with the kids going: is it done yet? Is it done yet?) I still have thousands of photos to edit (or not). That will keep me busy all fall and into the winter. We are heading to Belize for a week for March Break, and we are just starting to talk about doing a California trip (Pacific Coast Highway, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and Disneyland) in the summer.

Great. Thanks! I would love to stay in the Chateau. We stayed there ~8 years ago for an anniversary trip to Banff. We got a great deal on Hotwire and couldn't pass it up. It was supposed to be a parking lot view but we got a great view out onto the lake instead! It's only great for a night or two though; personally I would rather stay in Banff.
