I read:
A Man Called Ove and thought it was charming (and sometimes bittersweet). 4/5 stars.
The Girl in the Spider's Web. Didn't have the same spark as the first books and felt a little like "paint by the numbers". 3/5 stars.
After You. Compulsively readable, but the story didn't have the same power as the first book. 3.5/5 stars, rounded up to 4 on Goodreads.
I'm currently reading My Brilliant Friend and have multiple books from the library waiting for me: We Never Asked for Wings, The Marriage of Opposites, Bull Mountain, Fates and Furies, All the Pretty Girls, and The Tsar of Love and Techno (I'm very excited to read this one - I absolutely loved his first book A Constellation of Vital Phenomena).

Last week I read All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. It is compared to Fault in the Stars and Eleanor and Park. I do see where those comparisons come from. Some of the reviews that I read didn't like this book because they felt that it was just a retelling of those. But I really enjoyed the book. It is a boy who is fascinate by death and always thinking of how he might kill himself. And then there is a girl whose sister was killed in an accident. They meet at the top of the bell tower at school and form a relationship. I would recommend it.

I finished reading The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty. I'd give it a 4/5 stars. Last night I started Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King. I haven't read a Stephen King book in forever - I'm hoping this is a good one. lynnek thanks for the recommendation. I just read some of the reviews on All the Bright Places and decided to buy it.

I haven't, but am intrigued by her range (i.e. her nonfiction book about polar exploration).

I finished two books this week. Two Across by Jeff Bartsch. Vera and Stanley meet while contestants in the National Spelling Bee. They are together then they separate, then find each other through crossword puzzle clues. I thought this one was a little gimmicky and the characters fell flat. 2/5 The Last Policeman by Ben Winters. I believe someone on one of the Pea reading threads recommended this one. An asteroid is due to hit (and basically destroy) earth in 6 months. Many people have quit their jobs and gone to do things from their bucket lists, many other commit suicide, but Detective Hank Palace is still working cases. This one raises some interesting questions about our goals/purposes in life as well as being a good police procedural. It is the first of a trilogy, but this book also stands alone. I have the next book on reserve at the library now. 4/5 I was a fan of The Last Policeman series.

I finished Angelfall by Susan Ee. It was pretty good. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars on GoodReads and picked up the second and third books in the series. I just started Ready Player One by Ernest Cline yesterday. My DH doesn't think I'll enjoy it, but we'll see. Melissa I enjoyed both of those books.

I'm reading The Stand by Stephen King. It's a great story and I don't know why I've waited all these years to read it. I think The Stand was originally released in 1978, which is the year I graduated from high school. It's strange to read the book and see the many ways life has changed since 1978. The characters use pay phones and ride in cars w/out buckling their seatbelt and take aspirin for every ailment. It is a bit dated, but it's one of my all-time favorites.

I was very touched about her explanation of why she wrote this book.

Hope to get to it soon! I had a bunch of holds come up at the same time, so now I'm scrambling to get them all read (especially since most are new releases that have too many holds to be renewed!). I've been reading the Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children series. Finished book 2 this morning and bought #3 for my Kindle. I've enjoyed it tremendously, so far.

I finished Kayla Aimee's book last week and it was really good! My sister was a preemie so I could relate to what she was going through. Loved reading stories of her past woven into the main story line. She is a great writer and it was neat to read because I could actually picture her face when reading the book.
Started reading Friction by Sandra Brown and it's really good too. I'm a big fan of hers so it's enjoyable and makes me want to read more.

I was fighting a bug this weekend, so my sleep patterns are all wonky. I was up at 1:45 reading and have not been back to sleep since. I finished Little Friend by Donna Tartt just minutes ago. I think that she is a literary genius. But this book - gahhhh! There is no point to it. At all. It had so much potential. But the ending - it felt like someone was talking and just completely stopped mid-sentence. Her literary skills aside, 2/5. In comparison, I loved The Goldfinch, the only other book that I have read by her, despite it's verbosity and need for serious editing, and gave it a 5/5. Lisa I didn't like Little Friend either, but loved The Secret History and The Goldfinch. I would definitely recommend [ b]The Secret History. [/b][/quote] It is rare that I give up on a book, although I am trying to get better, but I abandoned "The Secret History " without guilt. Horrible, horrible characters

Every Secret Thing by Lippman, pretty good, but I have only been reading a bit at night, so it's taking a long time. Lots of characters, so I have to skip back and remind myself who they are. But reading right before bed when I am tired anyway, that's probably why! Have The Good Girl to read too. I have to go back and refresh a little almost every time I read. ha. Regrettably, I don't read as much as I would like to and have no excuses for not doing so. Right now I am loving 11/22/63, but it's long and rereading some of it is taking me awhile to progress.

I just finished Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter. It was amazing! Absolutely amazing. She's my favorite author but I felt that her last couple of books (Cop Town, especially) was not her best work but she is back with a vengeance with this new book!
If you like psycho thrillers you'd love this one!
