About 4-6 weeks ago I posted we had hornets in our house. LOTS of hornets. Freaked me the frack out. I called someone out, and he could not find where they were coming in from. He sprayed every inch of our house, killed everything alive inside the house, and said we might see some stragglers for a few days. Which we did. The next couple of weeks everything was quiet. Now, they're starting to appear again! Not a lot, a straggler here and there, but they're here, inside the house. Yesterday I grabbed the blanket off of the couch, covered myself on the chair, and within minutes there was was crawlin up the blanket towards my face. So, I did what every mature, sane, rational adult would do--I screamed, threw the blanket and hung out upstairs until DH came come. Since I threw the blanket, I had no idea where the bastard went. DH took the blanket outside and shook it out, searched through the family room and didn't see it, so he assumed it was gone. Well, this morning there was one walking in the kitchen. The sissy in me wants to believe it's the same one as yesterday, but in reality, who knows. This is horribly terrifying to me. There isn't a hornet to be found outside anymore-they've died off. Sit in my family room, and there they are. Give me strength!

Inside your cozy house for the winter? Terrifying ! My mother accidentally broke into a nest outside. She was lucky my father was around the corner, the stings were awful. I hope you track down every last one of the little beasts.

I hope you track down every last one of the little beasts. That is my worst fear! I've been stung way too many times for my liking, but I've never been attacked. Several years ago my dad was hosing down his window well, and must have hit and disturbed a hive in the ground. He ran into the house, and he guessed he had 15-20 stings? They were in his shirt, up his shorts, etc. I'm happy your dad was there to help her. What did he do?

Yikes! I'd be freaking out. It was cold last the last few nights. I'd worry that they are living inside the house somewhere if they are still out and active. I think I'd call another extermination/animal control company and ask for some advice. I wouldn't be able to relax and would keep watching for the next attack! These guys are out in my area and are excellent to work with: www.suburbanwildlifecontrolil.com/beeshornets.html They might not come down by you due to their service zone, but they will likely know someone in your area that they could recommend.

I probably said this before, but about 10 years ago, in our other house, we had the same problem. Fortunately we found the problem. We had our satellite dish installed on our chimney. We had to have it moved up, and the original holes were never filled. It took a few days watching at night, and DH finally got up on the roof and just watched the chimney since we had a feeling that's where they were getting in. Finally saw them going in one of the holes at dusk. Filled the hole, and an exterminator put a bomb in the fireplace. That was the end of that. This--it's making me want to cry.

Thanks for the link! Unfortunately, it looks like we're just outside their service area. I can give them a call and see what they say. And I agree about them being alive in the house. They're alive in the walls somewhere. Gawd!

My mom accidentally dug into the hive with a small hand trowel, her face and arm took a lot of stings. I don't know details of how my Dad helped, we lived 1500 miles away, but it's been 15-16 years and they still talk about how persistent the hornets were. It must have been one of those times that felt like an eternity but only lasted a few minutes in reality. Water doesn't scare them away. I've seen photos, she was lucky. We don't have the same kind of hornets here, but my mom cautions me when I tell her I'm cutting back the verbena.

That would freak me out too. Last year I walked through a hive. Holy cow do those stings hurt. I was completely covered in them. They were up my pant legs, all over my body - ouch ouch ouch. Of course, 1 straggler stung dh and you'd have thought he'd had his arm cut off.
You need to burn the house down.

I'm terrified of hornets too. We had them getting into a rented house one time and I finally found the source of their entry - a light fixture. They were in the attic space and coming out of the bathroom light fixture. We taped over the little opening and no more came in but the knowledge they were up in the attic was frightening.

I don't like anything that flies and stings/bites, but at least bumble bees truly go for the flowers, and wasps...well, I don't know what they go after but they fly slow and really kinda stay away from people. Hornets-they want to EAT people, lol. That would freak me out too. Last year I walked through a hive. Holy cow do those stings hurt. I was completely covered in them. We had an arbutus tree in the back yard with a basketball sized nest on it. My dad and the neighbour were thinking they were Tarzan or something and wanted to cut it off. I called the fire department and asked how to do this. I figured they were as good a resource as any and they were first responders if someone got hurt. The guy told me exactly how to remove this as they have had to do it in the past (like rescuing a kitten from a tree) and they cut it off and put it in a plastic garbage bag. They died off. That stupid hive of theirs was buzzing all the time. It was a beautiful work of art but scary as hell.
These days I have a friend who is in pest control and whenever I need something he comes over asap. He is a good friend and I know I can trust him 100%. He gets rid of problems right away.

We did what Elannah described. In the evening, while they were sleeping, we cut a bit of the branch off near the hive, tied a trash bag over the branch and hive, cut off the bit of branch with the bag and hive, and locked it all in a trash can for a couple of months. It made for a cool science show and tell.
