We had this thread last week. The words are not interchangeable. They are two separate things. Stuffing, by its very definition, had to be stuffed inside something. If you don't cook it in the bird it is not stuffing. We eat dressing, which is not cooked in the bird. No matter how insistent you are, the only definition I can find that uses dressing the way you do, defines "dressing" as "stuffing", which does make them interchangeable. I completely understand that the word is used regionally the way you do, but it doesn't make the rest of us wrong. They also appear in the thesaurus as synonyms. If you asked someone to pass you the dressing at our dinner table, a liquid to pour on your salad would be heading your way .This would also be the outcome at our thanksgiving, so make sure you ask for that glorious stuffing

Neither...it's dressin', duh. I'm from the South. It's made from cornbread and it's cooked in a pan. The stuff put up the bird's butt is stuffin' and bless your little New England hearts--it's just tacky to put ANYTHING up a bird's butt.

I'm Canadian and I call it stuffing whether it's inside or out of the bird. And I don't know anyone who makes it out of cornbread.

I am a stuffing gal from New England.
Dressing makes me think of salad dressing.

I somehow missed the other thread too. My mom always stuffed the bird but would usually also make an extra pan outside of the bird so there would be enough to go around. Therefore, technically we always had both. It wouldn't matter what you called it, if you asked for either you would be passed a container of cooked, cubed bread (but never cornbread) with other stuff mixed in. (I'm in MN.) I agree that generally speaking, around here "dressing" is what you would put on a green salad but since we NEVER have that on Thanksgiving there would be no confusion whatsoever. My mom made the kind with cubed bread, celery, seasonings, chicken broth, etc. MIL used to make hers with all kinds of stuff in it that I wasn't used to, like nuts, dried cranberries, raisins, that kind of thing, but that's another thread entirely.

I'm from Texas, so firmly in the dressing camp- and it's cornbread dressing, in case anyone should need details. My DH is from Ohio, he can't stand our dressing, he wants stuffing- from a box. So, StoveTop stuffing for him, real dressing for the rest of us. (Except my youngest DS, of course, who is gluten-free, and this holiday is a nightmare for me with so many other people cooking. Normally, he'd steer clear of any bread/breaded type of food that I don't make. But, my mom found a GF box of stuffing- so maybe we can feed both DH and DS2??? Time will tell!)

Trader Joe's is selling two types of stuffing mixes this year - cornbread and gluten free.

We call it both - depending on what you do with it.
I'm from the Southeast USA
If you put it inside the turkey, while it cooks, it is stuffing.
If you bake it in a dish, it is dressing.
We actually do both - we put some in the turkey and put the rest in a dish so we have both stuffing and dressing.

I am in the South, Georgia, and it's dressing if it's the good stuff. Made with cornbread & biscuits shopped up very fine. With goblet gravy of course! Stuffing comes in a box and we don't eat that on the Holidays.
Dressing should only consist of cornbread, biscuits, onion, s/p, chicken broth, eggs (maybe celery) and should be crumbled up or ran through a processor and baked in a dish. Dressing should never inside a bird.

We make ours with a combination of cornbread and regular loaf bread. Instead of chopping up celery and onions we put cans of celery, chicken, onion soups and sage. Lots of sage.

I make 2 kinds:
the stuffing is a bread stuffing that goes inside the bird.
the dressing is a sausage/apple/corn dressing and is cooked wrapped in tinfoil.
ETA: I grew up in B.C.
