I have never transfered plates. I just get new ones with each new car. When I got my last vehicle, I got vanity plates with my initials and I think I will be keeping it from now on.

I kept my original license plate number back in Illinois... "GM5865" I still remember it fondly!!
But when we moved to AZ, of course I had to get a different one-- and I think I recall also having to get a different license plate when I got a new car?? Which I think stinks-- but neither of those numbers resonated with me in any way, if that make any sense-- lol!.
Now I have a personalized plate partly so that I can keep it the same as long as I can, partly because I like what it says. I don't like having to switch license plate numbers; I get 'attached' to the number.

DH has Veteran plates. His get transferred.
Last time I bought a car, the plate sticker was in its renewal period. The dealership said they couldn't transfer them, so they put new plates on. I've lived in 3 states and had too many plates to remember the number. I take a picture of it with my cell and know it's there if I need it for something.

I'm on my first car and I get sad just thinking about one day having to buy a new one... Love my car (Honda Element) - never seen anything that's designed so perfectly practical for how I use it... I want to keep my plates - they feel a bit like a passport with stamps of everywhere I've been... ^^^ I love your car, too!! Once I could pick and buy my 'own' cars after college, I have always had Hondas... A Honda Civic coupe (fun, fun car-- purple), a silver Honda CRV when I bought my house (so I could haul stuff around), and now a silver Honda Fit hatchback (still good hauling capacity, but a bit smaller and better gas mileage). I soooo wish the still made the Element; it would be perfect!! And whoever said they match their license plate to the car isn't totally crazy-- my license plate is the AZ Centennial plate which is crimson, blue, and gold, and it irritates me that it doesn't 'go' with the silver color of my car. But my car is paid off, so I don't want a new car payment just to make the colors match, lol! But whenever I DO get a new car, that WILL be a consideration-- just that the car will have to coordinate with the license plate instead of the other way around!

I don't get attached to cars. I don't get attached to their plates. Hell, I don't really get attached to houses either. I'm more attached to the memories than the object itself. If I can transfer the plate, I will. If I have to get a new one, I will. I don't understand why people keep their plates to a point where it's potentially violating the local law. Here, and I'd think everywhere else too, you have to have a plate that is legible at all times. Sometimes the police get picky about it. Sometimes they overlook it until you get pulled over for something else. I saw a plate recently that was so worn out was literally just a white metal plate. I have no idea how that is even able to stay on the road. License plates must be like appliances, the old ones last forever and the newer ones are more disposable. I agree that a plate must be readable and mine are. They have aged well for being 33 years old, better than i have. They may be a little bent and beat up but they are extremely legible. You can also order replacements...so if things work out I will be able to keep my 1st (and only) plate number for my driving life. A lot of people don't care but it makes me happy...hahaha.

We don't transfer plates, but we make sure to request the Ski Utah license plates. I don't like the ones they issue now. dmv.utah.gov/plates/standardThe 4th plate down is the one we like. If I lived in Southern Utah, I'd pick the arches. The top one is a more recent one, but looks too similar to Idaho (neighboring state). www.itd.idaho.gov/dmv/vehicleservices/documents/plates.pdfETA: Come to think of it, my husband might have transferred the plates to his Nissan car. I'll have to check.

Here a license plate stays with the car. Other than a personalized plate, you don't have the option of keeping them. I had my last car for 12 years and after 8 years, they automatically sent me new plates in the mail.

I have specialty plates...University of Arizona that say "WLBR" for Wilbur the , our mascot, and the name of my car. They are even cooler because they are Texas plates, since that is where I live now. I will keep them as long as I have this car. If I get a new car I will get new plates, since not every car can be named Wilbur. Of course my car had to match too, so I picked out a dark blue car. My next one should be red so I can name it Wilma, the other mascot. LOL
