My dd 19 was traveling home last week at 8 pm. It was raining and she was traveling on the freeway. A sheriff pulled her over. Sat behind her for 15 min with his lights on and siren going the whole time. He then proceeds to nudge her car with his truck. She gets scared and calls home and get my Dh. I can hear his convo with her. He says he pulled you over...you are on the side of the road..his lights/siren are on...I don't know what to tell you...he hit your car... Don't know what to tell you stay in the car...
then all of a sudden you can hear the officer screaming at her saying I was behind you for 10 min. You didn't get it when I bumped your car..you can hear her saying I didn't know what to do. Then phone goes dead.
I text her shortly after saying does she need help. She says no. text again 10 min later, are you ok? She says she is heading home.
She got home and was shook up. She got a speeding ticket and an illegal parking ticket. She thought she was pulled over enough on the shoulder but the officer had her move ahead a bit more. She was in a 50 mph zone and does not know if she was speeding but could have been. He said she was going 65 mph.
the next day she gets a call from the sheriffs boss saying he has questions about the stop. She tells him what happens and you can tell she is still shook up. He asks her lots of questions including her age and how she felt when the officer yelled at her. He asked why she did not move when he bumped her, was she in park ect... She said she was afraid he would think she was leaving.
Yesterday internal affairs calls her and she tells her story again.
What do you think will happen next? luanne
12/10. We have no update at this point. As far as we know he did not use a PA system. My dd said even though it was raining at one point she did roll the window down to see if he was using one. But she heard nothing. We are going to wait till next week and then call the first officer that called. Court date is right after Christmas. We will be going to it. Luanne
update 12/27 My dd got another call from internal affairs officer and he said that the parking ticket is dropped and officer asked if she had any further questions, she said no. The speeding ticket is still there. We assume that the parking ticket flagged something with the officers superior and that is why it was looked at. My dh and I were there to hear conversations with the superior officer and internal affair officers and both were pleased at how they talked to her. I googled in the officers name and he was suspended once this year already, so maybe that has something to do with it also.
my daughter admits to feeling she was going over 50 mph and will pay the ticket.
i know this will not be a favourable response so please be gentle but I do feel this stop was a lesson learned. We let my dd handle it in her own way. She is not someone who will not test authority and is a good kid but was always gone, driving here there everywhere being a typical 19 year old. She has slowed down and is home now more and thinking a bit before driving somewhere especially downtown In the city. (She drove down to the city 5 days a week for school in the last year so she is familiar with the roads ect.) As a her mom I feel it was a gift or someone from above telling her to slow her roll before something could happen.
thank you, luanne
edit it again ...not that it makes a difference but forgot to add the not in front of test authority

Oh wow, I don't know, but I was on the edge of my seat reading that post. Yikes! I'm glad she's okay, she must have been terrified.

I dont know but I sure would be writing down every call and documenting every conversation, and I would fight the tickets, especially the illegal parking ticket. Sometimes LEOs can be just as much of assholes as civilians.

Bumped her car??? What for?? What does that even mean? What was she supposed to do then? I've been driving for almost 30 years and have never heard of that.
Your poor DD. I would have been scared to death at her age, and probably even now at my age.

Okay, I'm usually one who sides with the LEO, but I'm horrified for your daughter. I would've done the same thing she did. I can't imagine that it's EVER okay for a police car to nudge another car, risking damage. As the parent of a teenage girl, I'd be really angry. I don't know what to tell you to expect, but I suspect those calls mean there are red flags raised at the police station - something is not right. Good luck - keep us updated!

I am not sure what I would have done if the sheriff had bumped my car. I can totally see thinking the law officer would think I was trying to leave. This kind of a situation, while really scary, will hopefully be a character builder for your daughter. It sounds like there could be a lot more to the story. I'm a big advocate of what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Thankfully she has supportive parents on her side and she will be okay.

I think something is showing up on his dashcam, and they are keeping an eye on this guy for some reason. I'm not sure if it's normal procedure to review those films each shift, but someone must have tipped off internal affairs.
If I were her, I'd certainly be fighting the tickets if they don't make them disappear for her.

I would get a lawyer to preserve evidence. I think this is a big deal. Never ever heard of anything like that. I would be scared to death!

He crossed the line when he bumped her car. That was unwarranted.

I'm a bit confused. Did he follow her for 10-15 minutes before she finally pulled over? Or did she pull over and he sat in his car behind her for that time frame?

How scary for your daughter, and you. I can't imagine why he would bump her car, even if she wasn't pulled over all the way. Or why someone from the SO would call her and ask about it. UNLESS, something showed up on the deputy's dash cam. Maybe they've had complaints about him.

Holy heck!! Something must be up, with the follow up calls. I would have been livid! if that had happened to my dd! I mean, ok, she didn't pull over far enough. Get OUT of your f'ing car and tell the poor girl. Like someone else said, I would be writing everything down, esp since it's so fresh.

From what I am reading, dd pulled over, and he just sat there with the lights and siren still on, sitting there, and then nudged her.

I read it as she pulled over right away, but didn't park the way the officer wanted her to, so he just sat there and then finally bumped her car.
I understand his reasons if she wasn't pulled far enough off the road, how many LEOs have died that way? BUT he could have come out, quickly come to her door and said, "Miss, pull forward and further off the road."
Instead, he chose to terrify the poor thing. I'm sure she was paralyzed with fear and indecision. I would have been too!

Bumping the car is very weird. I would not have known what to do under those circumstances and I'm a lot older than your daughter.
And the parking ticket? That's very strange, and that alone would be a red flag to me that something isn't right. I wonder if the boss thinks so too.
Document, document, document. I have a feeling this deputy is under scrutiny in a big way.

I have to admit that I would be more than confused if I got pulled over, then the police person sat behind me for 15 minutes and then bumped the back of my car. I am significantly older than your daughter and it would be more than disconcerting to me. I think the difference would have been the minute he hit me car I would have been on the phone with an attorney to allow him to listen in on the rest of the stop.
But I am older, and have the ability to do get in touch with an attorney quickly in an emergent situation. I can't imagine how out of sorts it would make me if I was younger.

Oh, I'd be pea livid if that was my teenage daughter. I support LEOs but that doesn't sound like any kind of professional behavior.

He just sat behind her with lights and siren going even after she parked. She was on the shoulder of the right lane. I know it does take time to run our plates but I thought they do that with siren off.

That is frightening. Poor girl. There's no way in heck I would've moved my car without being told directly by the officer. As for the sirens, I could see him leaving the flashing lights on during the entire stop, but are you saying the sirens were actually sounding for 15 minutes? That's just bizarre. She must have been so scared. I, too, wonder if there was dash cam video that was reviewed...

How scary. I just read this to my DH. He's a retired police officer. He said if Internal affairs is calling, then the officer involved is gonna get his ass in trouble. He said if she was completely stopped he had absolutely no right to hit her with his car. The cop cars are equipped with a PA system he could have easily gotten on that and told her to pull forward to get off the road completely.
I can't imagine how scared she must have been.

The first time I got pulled over it was an unmarked car. There was no siren, or typical police light.... just yellow flashing lights on the front of the car. I think the guy followed me for about 10 mins. with them on before I mentioned it to my Mom.. and she said pull over.
Boy did I get yelled at. First by the cop. Then by my Mom who had to keep telling me to slow down, before I got the ticket.
I have no idea how I was supposed to know it was an unmarked police car.
Even with my MOM ( or maybe because I was with my Mom) it scared the hell out of me.
OP.. I would call a lawyer
