I always feel like it is the time of year when I have the most time to myself. So I like that. However, I hate dealing with snowy/icy roads. It really stresses me, so that can put a bit of a damper on the good side of January for me sometimes. This year's been good so far, though.
I hope things improve for you, OP!

A few years ago I would be sinking into the depths if despair. But, the are so many who are worse off than I am that being depress would be unseemly and selfish.

A few years ago I would be sinking into the depths if despair. But, the are so many who are worse off than I am that being depress would be unseemly and selfish. I understand that feeling. Someone said to me once that despite the fact that there are people everywhere who are worse off than we are, we are entitled to our feelings. I agree that focusing on others can be a way to focus less on ourselves, but I don't want to think that anyone with these feelings is being selfish. Every person is different, with different feelings, and different ways of coping. I thank all of you who have treated me gently and understood my feelings. Just knowing that there are others with the same feelings is helpful in not feeling detached and alone.

I'm still ok in January, and so far this winter its been very mild. It's March that really gets me down.

I usually have a January funk - last year it was really bad. It's dark, cold, and I just don't want to get out of bed in the morning. I'm trying hard to avoid it this year. It really helps that we've had a much milder than normal winter. Normally by this time I'm sick of winter and find it depressing that we still have a lot left. It's cold again now, but I have a better attitude about it since it's just starting. My husband gave me a Fitbit for Christmas and that was a really well timed gift. I was really starting to slack on my workouts and now I'm back into doing dvds, running outside when I can, and squeezing in extra walks - my dogs are loving it. I decided to take on a couple of bigger crochet projects and have finished one blanket and am now working on one for my daughter. It's nice to work on a project where you are curled up under the blanket you are making. I'm also making a point to eat better and try some new recipes for dinner. I'm really making an effort to have a different kind of January and so far I feel like I'm doing OK. 1/3 done. Hopefully I can keep it going.

January - long, cold and dark. Weekdays, it's dark when I get to work and dark when I get home.

I am going to Cuba in a few weeks.
Sun, sand & ocean will help me survive the rest of the winter.

No, for me the depressing months are Oct.-Dec. My family dislikes fall because it gets cold, rains all the time (don't see much sun) and gets dark so early. Then we travel so much visiting the parents and inlaws between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so it's exhausting packing and unpacking 3 times, and all the time in the car. I love when all that's finished and we can relax!

I am heading to Florida on Tuesday. I cannot wait to be out of the cold weather. Today it was 30 degrees and it felt like a heatwave.
And I am heading to Ft. Lauderdale for a couple of days in February for work. I feel lucky.

In the southern half of the planet, we're all on summer holidays. As a person who works in a school - I love January.

I do not like January or the first part of the year. My parents died in January and February. It's cold and dark those months. All I want to do is sleep until spring and some sunshine. And I don't even live in the cold part of the country, but this is miserable. Oh, and I have to go to work. Yuk!

I'm so sorry you are struggling this month. I, too, have problems in the winter months.
Most years my answer has been to go work in my garden. I live in N GA and even though we get freezes, I can grow a number of things under cloches made of pvc and and a cloth designed to let light thru. Also, there are a ton of chores that I didn't get to during more temperate times of the year, so I always have something to do.
This year, I found out why the garden has worked so well for me. I apparently have chronically low Vitamin D, like less than 4. I guess getting outside boosted what little I did have and kept me somewhat sane. This year I've been on 50,000 units once a week for the past 3 months and not only do I feel tremendously more cheerful, I have more energy. I don't know if this is part of the magic VD, but I've noticed for the past 3 weeks, my hair is growing back. I had gotten very, very thin on top. Now I can feel fuzzies all along my scalp.
My DH is diabetic and he didn't manage his diabetes for almost 15 years. He took some of the meds he was prescribed, but not the way he or in the quantities he was supposed to do. Last year he had 3 strokes from Feb to Apr, all of which his drs directly related to his out of control diabetes. He and I worked together this past year to get him on his meds correctly and to change our eating habits. Our main focus has been eating food we prepare at home. Cooking at home allows us to control the sugar and salt in the food and we can measure out the portions. The year before he had his stroke, his A1C was in the 11's. Last month is was 5.6 for the 3rd time. Yes, 5.6 - as in - NORMAL, not even diabetic. Of course, that's with him on all the meds, eating the way he has learned and taking the meds as instructed.
DH is Italian and one of the things that has really helped keep him on the straight and narrow is Dreamfield's Pasta. This pasta tastes so normal, you would never know that it has very little absorbable carbs. The manufacturer does something that binds the carbs in such a way that, like the carbs in beans, your body can't break them down and they just pass thru the digestive system rather than being absorbed. I make the sauce for the pasta with lots of veggies in it and this cuts down on the sugar load from the tomatoes. I encourage you to read up on Dreamfield's and see if it will work for you.

January and February are bad for me. I'm already irrationally angry that it is leap year, meaning I have a whole extra day to muddle through in February. I'm getting riled up again just thinking about it. Isn't that ridiculous?
