For any service I'm having done (mani/pedi, massage, haircut, etc) I really prefer to just relax and not have to talk. I talk all day long at work so I don't want to when I'm trying to unwind.

I find it difficult to understand most of the nail techs so I smile and nod a lot. my hairstylist is easier to understand so we usually chat. sometimes when the nail techs talk to each other i wonder what they are talking about! Made me think of the Seinfeld episode where Elaine brings George's father with her because he speaks Korean and she thinks they're talking about her. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I don't like having to "make" conversation during services. If I have a relationship (my former hairdresser's and my son were best friends, so we had plenty to talk about) it's OK, but I don't like small talk with someone I rarely see, and I have trouble hearing in a noisy salon. I always feel rude when I don't talk to the lady that does my pedicures. She will try to initiate conversation, but I can barely understand her, so it feels awkward because I have to ask her to repeat, or I'll try to take a cue from her and smile and nod. Usually I bring my daughter so I can have a distraction, or if the conversation comes to a lull, I will start to look at my phone.

This is has been very informative for me, thanks everyone I'm a salon owner in a small town, and am a certified master pedicurist, CMP. English is not an issue in my business and most people seem to want to talk. However, my pedicures are often less about 'fluff and pretty' and more about helping with foot and skin issues. Many clients are repeat customers and there's usually conversation and at times a lot of laughing. I try to pay attention to what their mood is and let them take the lead. However, I didn't realise so many really prefer quiet. Learn something new every day!

I am not there to socialize. I'm there to relax. I'm paying to be pampered, not make friends. Ok, that sounds realllly awful, but seriously, I just want to relax when I'm getting a pedicure. Sometimes I plug in my headphones and watch a tv show.

I don't mind a little bit of talking, but mainly I just want to sit back and relax, not talk, or have a care in the world! It's one of the very rare times I can have some me time.

I don't get my nails done but I have been going to the same hairstylist for about 4 or 5 years and I still find talking to her awkward. She's not my friend and I did really want to tell her what's going on in my life. She's a very nice woman but I feel like she's just being nosey.

I've gone to the same nail salon for a long time, but I never know which tech I will get. It's a walk in salon. They are all very nice but none of them speak English very well. Some only to the point where they can hand me the card and I point to what I want. As soon as I get in the chair, I grab a magazine from the table next to it. I don't mind small, infrequent chit chat, but I'm there to relax and enjoy the experience without making small talk. They seem fine with that too. Often they are chatting with each other. It's all good.
My hair salon- I have been going there for over 20 years (as does my DH and my mom) and not only know my stylist well but all the other stylists and most of the other customers too. Think Steel Magnolias. lol That is a social hour for me with lots of talking, laughing and catching up. I go every four weeks for a light trim.

I prefer not to have my nail technicians or my hair stylist chat while I'm having these services done. Other than what I want specifically done, I would prefer to read my book

I always think of the short film "Rosebud" where the two friends are talking during their pedis and their techs are also talking (both pairs in their native languages).
It's hilarious when they all say the name "Rosebud" at the exact same time and figure out one man is dating one of the customers and one of the techs!
