Looking for some perspective on this.
Today Family Christian sent this email -
Is this going over board - apologizing for an email with that had Channel Your Inner Creative as the subject line? I had no idea that channeling your inner creative could be controversial. Maybe I am being too simple about this but think you'd have to be looking way to much into that to create such a hubba hubba to the retailer causing them to send out an apology email.

I've never understood why Christians get all bent out of shape over art.
After all, God created and we are made in His image. Shouldn't we create as well.
I see nothing wrong w channel your inner creative. (Christian for more than 20 years, daughter of a pastor.)

That's way overboard. AND I can't believe the store apologized. Crazy. People need to get over it.

The only thing worth apologizing for in that subject line is using the word creative (an adjective) rather than creativity (a noun). "Channel Your Inner Creativity" But you don't have to listen to me if you don't like, as I am not actually Christian.

Perhaps it's the phrase "channeling" that was upsetting and seemed "new age" to some. It also might conjure images of mystics or mediums.
This Christian would not take offense and certainly would not have called the company to complain.

I received that email too and thought - what the heck? People complained about that email being too "New Age" and not Christian - unreal!! People are just too touchy, for Pete's sake.

t was not our intent to use New Age or inappropriate language That's a shame. My favorite minister would take a passage from the Bible and make it sound like it was happening today. Language is fluid - especially American language. If you don't allow the Bible to be translated into newer language, then it becomes very stale and archaic. The Bible is the story of hope and redemption. It is a love story between God and people. It's not something that happened long ago, it's something that happens today. God loves us. Even if we speak modern American. The only people I've ever heard of that try to stifle the creative parts of our nature are very strict fundamentalists of various religions. If that's who this group is, then it makes sense that they would need to apologize for encouraging free thought, but if that's not who this group is, then they have gone way 'round the bend on this.

Aw maaan... There are Christians that have Rules To Live By and They. Write. Letters. I probably have my own [so-called] deal breakers but this ain't one of them ... Let's see, where am I going with this... Christianity is not a matter of, Accept Christ Then Follow The Rules. Multi-tasking. Sorry. That's all. Love y'all Layce

It's crap like this that makes people lump ALL Christians together when stupid stuff happens. I, as a Christian, wouldn't even have thought to be offended! I guess I better stop trying to "channel my inner Martha Stewart"... what with being a Christian and all...

I'm guessing the objection was to the use of the word 'channel' in such a context?
I mean, don't mediums 'channel' the spirit of dead people?? Off the top of my head, I can't think of any other ways that word would be used, or any other reason the phrase might not be appropriate. I don't know what the exact Christian objection would be to the use of such a word, but that's my guess, anyway.
ETA: someone really needs to use a dictionary once in a while, I think! Talk about getting bent out of shape about nothing!!
Channel: verb (used with object), channeled, channeling or (especially British) channelled, channelling. 19. to convey through or as through a channel: He channeled the information to us.
20. to direct toward or into some particular course: to channel one's interests.
21. to excavate as a channel.
22. to form a channel in; groove.
verb (used without object), channeled, channeling or (especially British) channelled, channelling. 23. to become marked by a channel: Soft earth has a tendency to channel during a heavy rain.

I find it fascinating... Aren't they the same people who are upset that Merry Christmas becomes Happy Holidays... because they don't go for all that PC stuff....
I think using channel as a verb is not just a medium.
You could tell a child to channel their energy to something productive, or my boss uses it all the time, we are going to channel our resources, or money to xyz this month. And he is not New Age at all.
@crimsoncat beat me to it!

I'm really trying to be offended by that wording but I just don't see it. Stupid people complaining about something innocuous and stupid company apologizing for no reason. Don't we all have better things to do? Good grief!

Wow. I thought it was going to be about people getting their panties in a twist over "defacing" a bible. Some people look hard for something to offend them.

Yes, but the apology is for using New Age or inappropriate words. They're not apologizing for their art product. Unless I'm missing something. I truly have never heard of Christians getting cranky over art or the making of it - especially not the Christian-ness of it (whatever that means).

There will be the people who complained, which is bad enough but then there will be the people who also prayed over that email Prayed the sender would repent My friends mother would have prayed for Jesus to cut and break the devils powers over that word. Now the repentance has come in the form of an email apology, so God is good and has agreed with that particular Christian that using the word channel was wrong.

I wonder if they get upset because their tv channels information to them. Joel Olsteen or The 500 Club channeled right into their living room.
