I've just hear of a new service today called Chariot that is like Uber but for women only. I use Uber, but I do worry about safety but this new service would eliminate the worry of getting in a car with a strange male.
The service begins April 19.

There's also a new one that is caretaker and parents only that is for getting a ride for your kids. I'll have to look up the name. I actually had thought of that business idea because sometimes parents just can't be there to get their kids where they need to go. Looks like someone else though of it first.

Uber drivers have background checks and it's a lot easier to report your uber driver than some random taxi cab driver. So I think the whole idea of chariot for women is silly. I take rides in the city and call 911 at any time if I'm being held hostage.

I take rides in the city and call 911 at any time if I'm being held hostage. This is my favorite post of the day. #1. I love how it's written in present tense. It makes it sounds like this happens on the reg. #2. I love how you can't imagine a scenario where you might be held hostage and not able to access your phone. That said, I agree with you that I don't think Chariot will take off.

I did a lot of research on being an uber driver and decided against it. The main reason was my car. I didn't want it to be abused or damaged. The general public is not going to care if they spill drinks, food, vomit, urine, etc. in your car. I don't even like it if people leave trash in my car.

Unless I plan on passing out drunk in the back of a car at 3am, then yes I feel comfortable that I could get out of a situation. 99.9% of all the taxi drivers I've had were male, but with uber drivers I'd say my experience has been 50/50. I find a discussion amongst people who don't live in a city and don't take cabs that are primarily men all of a sudden need an alternative to uber silly. While any scenario is possible anywhere, I'd be more afraid of being hit by an uber driver while walking across the street than in the back of his car. At least if something happens with an uber driver it's easy to report as I said because uber knows who you were riding with.

My Dh is retired from his career but I still have a few years before I can retire so after being home for 6 months he wanted something with flexibility to due during the day so after researching decided to work as an Uber driver. We live down the street from WDW in Orlando so it's been good for him. He mostly works M - F daytime and has made some decent money, especially during spring break. They did do a background check on him but did not have to have his car inspected. He said they told him the car had to be less than 10 years old, clean condition and have 4 doors. He's met some interesting people and really enjoys it. It's a great job if you need one that offers flexibility and like meeting people That's great that he found something he enjoys to keep him busy during the day. My dad retired, then worked at a deli doing delivery to businesses for lunch. He was bored sitting home all day after used to being busy. If I had to get a job, that would be something I would enjoy, especially the flexibility and meeting people! But I have no sense of direction, so it wouldn't be a good job for me! I am jealous that you live in FL. It snowed 2 inches today and will be a high of 15 tonight. You don't need a good sense of direction....the Uber APP does the work for you giving you the directions much like the google map does. I'm jealous that you live where it actually snows...although it was a gorgeous weekend here and we do have very nice, mild winters, I know the dreaded humidity is just around the corner and will be here until October which I can't stand. We can't wait until I retire then we can become snowbirds and go north in the summer.

Which is why my husband goes off duty around 5/6pm everyday...he decided that he didn't want to deal with the bar crowd although he did say that if a customer does vomit in your car, they charge the customer a $200 surcharge so the driver can have their car professionally cleaned. Obviously, it's not something you really want to have to do, but if you were only able to work the late night bar crowd hours, then it's nice to know that option is available.

My husband and I get into more arguments because I can never get the GPS on my phone to work. It "talks" sometimes and doesn't talk sometimes. He says it's my fault and I say it's the stupid phone! So I pretty much print out and memorize directions before I go anywhere. Crazy! I would love to send our snow to you! But could we have your heat (you can keep the humidity!)? We had a really cold June last year, rained and in the 60s many days. A lot of people in our area stopped getting a pool membership because our summers have had so many cold and rainy days and we can't get our moneys worth. But if you like cool weather and not a lot of sun, southwestern PA would be a good place. I prefer a lot of sunny days and 80s in the summer (and I could deal with 70s in the winter!)

I've only ever been in a taxi while visiting Peru (and boy, those were some wild rides!), but I understand why some would feel more comfortable with a Chariot driver than Uber. Honestly, my first thought would be that I'm safer in a yellow cab than a Chariot, Uber, or Lyft. I guess that's because I wouldn't be in someone else's personal car, and the cab is in contact with the taxi company as to where the fare is going (I assume, based on things I've seen on tv)
I didn't know that Uber has a panic button and does background checks (regular taxis don't? Yikes!). I live out in the country where there aren't any cabs, and an unmarked Uber car taking a fare out to the middle of nowhere to do some nefarious deed would be seen as just regular traffic. A yellow cab driving around out here would stick out like a sore thumb.
If you Uber/Lyft/CHariot drivers live in a city that gets cruise ships stopping by, you can make a lot of money off the passengers that don't want to pay high prices for a shore excursion. They can get where they want to go in your car for a whole lot less than the packages that the cruiseline offers and have more time to explore the area.

My DH is an Uber driver. He loves it. Like the retired gentleman mentioned in a post above, he enjoys having something to do, people to meet, and interesting things to see. We live in NJ, and he's certified to drive to NYC, so he often has fares to LaGuardia or JFK airports. Those fares are great money. He can't pick up in NYC, which I'm grateful for. I'd hate to have him driving people around with all of the other crazy drivers in the city! But he makes decent money to supplement our income. Definitely not salary-replacing, but just some money to put away or use for travel. He only drives during the week, during the day, so he doesn't expect to make a fortune.
