For the record........A newspaper cannot/does not issue a press pass and send out a photographer! They do send out photographers but there really isn't such a thing as a "press pass" A legitimate photographer for a newspaper will just show up without the press pass, take photos, and when/if challenged about his right to be there will present his credentials (a credit card sized ID card, like an employee name badge or school id type of thing that shows photo, name, company he works for, and position)
Any "press pass" is issued by the host of the event or who ever is in control (such as the police in some cases). If you know you were there in an official capacity and weren't given a pass by the host, then you can be sure any other "press pass" being flashed around it NOT a legitimate pass.
but don't go brainless...... think about why an event would attract a news organization. Does your local paper normally carry photos of first communions? And don't EVER be afraid to ask questions to a photog. If they are there legitimately they will be able to tell you who there are there with.

YES, the local Catholic newspaper DOES normally carry photos of first communions/confirmations. I have been taking photos for this church for 9 years. At least three of those years, there have been official photographers from the local Catholic newspaper there taking photos.

Definitely a *pinger*. I would print out a couple of the shots that show him the best, especially with those tags, take screenshots of the website, especially if the kids' pictures show up there, and strongly consider contacting your local PD - particularly if they have a child safety division. If nothing else, they would have the information on file (and could possibly find the guy) ahead of time, in case someone ends up getting hurt.
At first I was thinking maybe a stock guy, but his behavior plus the website don't fit with that.
Is he clear enough in any of your pictures to be able to enlarge & read the tags?

I took photos for first communion/confirmation for the local church this morning. I've done this for the past 10 years, and I'm invited by the youth ministry person. They make an announcement that they've hired a photographer, and please stay away from the area in front of the altar, no flash, etc. There was a guy there wearing some sort of press pass and a shirt with a business logo on it. He started taking pictures of the Mass. I thought maybe he was from the local news or the local Catholic newspaper - no biggie. Then we got to the confirmation. I take one shot of each kid as they get annointed. The guy came up on the other side and started taking photos - not just one shot, but a burst of shots, close-ups of kids. But not every kid. A lot of the younger kids. He would skip a few kids here and there, and when we got to the the teens, he disappeared. Same thing for communion - lots of shots of younger kids, none of the older kids. Afterwards we did the group/class shots. I line the kids up, take my shots, then get out of the way so parents can take photos. He was coming in and taking really close-up shots of certain kids - always the younger ones, by the time the teen group was up there, he had disappeared. He didn't give out business cards. But the shirt he wore had a web address on it. I checked it out and it looks a bit sketchy. From his behavior, I am certain that he is NOT a press photographer. He was taking too many pictures of certain kids, and he did not ask for any sort of parental release to use the photos. There were too many kids he DID take pictures of to have been hired by a parent/group of parents - I would say that he took photos of 70-80 of the kids. What are you going to do with 4-6 shots of 70-80 kids? I've asked the RE director if they know who he was or why he was there. I don't expect to hear back until Monday, but I'm wondering - am I over-reacting, or does this sound sketchy? Sure, maybe he's just there to take pics of his niece/nephew/etc. but it just felt off to me. My husband was there as a second shooter and he said the same thing - during communion, the guy was on the side where my husband was shooting, but he stayed back more than he did when I was shooting. Any updates? ??

Nothing huge. The RE director was very upset about it. She called the guy, asked him about it and he got very angry and hung up on her. The photos of the girl disappeared from his website shortly after her phone call. Now his website is about 80% Trump stuff.
An e-mail was sent to the parents asking them to please call if any of them had hired him. There is also going to be an announcement in the bulletin tomorrow apologizing for his behavior and explaining that he was NOT hired or given any sort of permission from the church.
Already I've heard from a couple of different people that they had noticed him and were unhappy with his behavior - his absolute disregard for the religious ceremony that was taking place. They said he was a distraction and it bothered them. One of the parents said that they thought he was the official photographer and since he was fiddling with his camera when their kid came up, they were worried that they wouldn't have a photo of him - so instead of enjoying the moment, they were nervous about that. I did get photos of EVERY child, both confirmation and communion, but I feel bad that the moment was marred by this.

I do hope, in fact plead for you to do so--notify the police. He needs to be on their radar.
His reaction when questioned brings a huge red flag. He has not committed a crime, but I would not be surprised to learn that he has in the past or you see his name in the news in the future.

The RE director was going to pursue it further - I don't know if she heard back from a parent or not, but she has all of my photos of him plus the information about his behavior, his address/website/phone, etc. I haven't heard back from her since Monday.

Wow, this is such a strange situation. Glad you were booked to be there, and to take note of this guy. I always tell people to go with their gut and if it feels wrong it probably is. Maybe you could stop in at your local police department and ask if they have an internet watch type of person in their police department for your town. They may already be alert to this guy and his nonsense. Wouldn't hurt to inquire-they may be able to support your efforts and the church in resolving this. Just an idea.

How bizarre and scary. I think it's time for some police involvement and if he has nothing to hide and he can easily explain that to the police. But based on his reaction to the RE director it doesn't sound like he should have been there.
