Panera is my love/hate restaurant.
Food - usually good. Cinn crunch bagels are bomb diggity!
Our local one is a hot mess. Management changes all the time. Each manager comes in with his/her agenda so they change things, crews leave, new people to train (again), short-staffed, out of lots of things, floor and tables are more dirty than clean.
I don't understand their corporate vision at all unless it's to churn out people.
Last time we went the counter people were great (including the manager), but when we turned around to eat in the dining room it was filthy. And when we REALLY started looking around there was dirt everywhere that wasn't frequently used - backs of seats, lighting, corners - just ick. We haven't been back since. Oh and if you're dining in, food is brought to you.

MI
I've only been to two different locations, both in MI. In both, we were given a little stand with a number and did was brought to us if we chose to eat in. The only people picking up their food were to-gos.
There is usually an employee who clears off the tables but there is also a spot to leave your dirty dishes.
Ours is always busy.

My SF Bay Area Panera gives you the buzzer so they know what table to bring your food to you, and they prefer for their staff to clear/bus the tables.

WA Ours used to give us a buzzer and we would pick up our own food at the counter. A year or so ago they changed and now bring the food to you at your table. It's mostly bus your own tables. But, if it's slow or they have the staff, they will come by an ask if they can take your dishes. My first thought was that they hand it out the window to me in my car Yes, we are usually heading out of town and grabbing something on the way! Then I remembered the one at Alderwood mall used to give a buzzer, but I don't think the newer one in Shoreline ever did.

We have about 8 I can think of near us, in Colorado none of them being your food to the table or bus for you. You get a buzzer and get your food off the counter and put your trays in the station, I really don't like that last part having to sort out trash, tray, bowl and silverware. One of them installed self serve kiosks but set them up so you needed your panera card to swipe, not enter your phone number, so nobody uses the kiosks. One of them is really nice and new and one is just junky and woern out and the rest are somewhere in between. I'm from the Springs. Ours just call names out loud. You must be from the Denver area to have eight.

I live in Nebraska and have been to Panera in NE, Iowa and Chicago. All have a buzzer that you put on the table and they bring the food to the buzzer. Ready to eat items (bagels, desserts, coffee) they make and hand to you at the register. I've always bussed my own table. Not sure if it's expected. WHAT! I've been to Paneras in IA, IL (Chicago included), OH, WI, PA, MD, and VA and never once had my food brought to me! And I've always had to bus my own table. Some use the buzzer, some just yell your name. The Chicago Panera was near Union Station on the other side of the river. The NE/IA ones are all in the Omaha Metro.

We take our food to the table.
However, with work I very seldom each there. I have their app and LOVE it!! I can decide in the morning what I want for lunch, open the app, order it, pick it up on the way to work. They have it bagged and on a shelf for me to get. I don't have to go all the way up to the counter. I have used that app quite a few times.

I live in northern IN. they give you a little buzzer that goes off when your food is done and then you pick it up. I haven't been for a while, but I am pretty sure they bus your table for you, now.

The one near me in MA is a pick-up-you-own-food and bus-your-own-table. I don't mind collecting my food, but I hate busing my table. I usually have an armload of stuff (computer bag or shopping) and it's hard to sort things when your arms are full. I'd go a lot more often if they cleared the table. I like their food, and it's a great place to work for a couple hours.
