The plans for my latest debacle have been in the works for a couple of months now but I didn't want to talk about it because everyone here thinks I'm a crazy cat lady already. Guilty.
So what's the next logical step? Get rid of a few cats? Nahhhhh.
Operate a puppy rescue out of my house, of course.
It's a freaking long-ass story and I don't want to share too many details because we're going to be on the news next week and I don't want any psychos here figuring out my name.
In a nut shell - I have friends who are working/living overseas in a developing country for a couple of years. Conditions there are deplorable for dogs (think.....Asian dog meat market type of conditions). They started a non-profit and have been buying and rescuing puppies and getting them out of the country. I volunteered to be their US "agent". My first two puppies are arriving at the airport on Tuesday and I already have homes lined up for them but they will need to stay at my house a few days so I can get them acclimated and checked out by a vet.
In prep for this, I spent 2k to extend the fencing in my yard so that I now have a fenced-in dog area next to, but separate from, the cat area. The cats and dogs will have 1/8 acre each. I have dog crates set up for when they are in the house (they will only go outside when I am there to supervise, same as the cats). I have areas of the house that only cats can get to (two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs and the basement - I installed cat doors on each door, basically ruining the doors but oh well). And baby gates set up to keep dog and cat feeding areas separate.
I have all the gear and food. I'm all set. I just hope this isn't heartbreaking for me or DS to have to say goodbye to the puppies.
Well, wish us luck. I probably won't be posting too much in the future. Gonna be busy.
This really is my calling. I think that most humans can go F themselves as a general rule, but I'll do anything to help animals. I don't live a "normal" life in that I never have people over and it's hard to date or go out, but I also feel like I'm done with all that. I am lacking all interest in humans except for DS and family. The last 2 guys I dated suggested a get rid of some cats so I got rid of them (the guys). I have to stand in my truth and my truth is that I was meant to live in a back alley with stray cats. LOL. But at least we have a house instead.

Do what you do, however I couldn't live that many cats/kittens/dogs. The smell would make me ill. But doing what you do is part of what makes you, you. Good luck with this venture.

Ah crap. I'm a long, long, long time Pea and half the time your posts irritate the H out of me. And with this last post.....I think I love you. I'm a crazy dog lover. I seriously love dogs more than people. What you are doing is insane. And wonderful. And amazing. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you. I wish you, your cats and the foster doggies all the best. I hope you have great success in this endeavor. It really bothers me when people try to make me feel guilty (or treat me like I'm crazy) because I care so much about my dogs. They are my heart beat. My everything. Follow your heart. Ignore the negative-nellies. You will never regret choosing the path that your heart takes you on.

Have you thought of starting a no-kill rescue in your area? It might be something to look into if this fostering thing takes off.

Congrats on your new adventure!
As someone who rescues and just got the "I can't believe you've have those dogs stay at your house while their waiting to be adopted" comment again today, you just gotta do what your called to do and ignore the jerks. I am fostering two - 12 week old pups right now. It was really, really hard to say goodbye at the beginning but seeing how many more needed the opportunity to be in a loving home until they find their forever home is the motivation for me to say goodbye. It does get easier the more you do it.
I wish you much success and please feel free to message me if you run into any issues and need some advice. We have been doing it pretty much constantly for several years and really love it.

You're really dedicated to cats (now dogs lol) I think it's awesome. Having a actual animal shelter away from your home so you can help more animals out would be something you would be wonderful at.

I just adopted a pup directly from her foster mom 2 weeks ago. Everyone NEEDS three dogs!!

Sounds like a good thing you're doing.
I'm curious to know about the quarantine laws for when you bring dogs into the US - or aren't there any?
In this country a dog has to be quarantined at a facility before being released. It used to be for one month but I think that time has now been reduced, maybe to 10 or 15 days. Each country is categorised depending on whether they are rabies-free or not, and there are different rules and lengths of quarantine.

Thank you as a long-time dog lover. Thank you for rescuing the dogs and finding them safe homes. I think you need to look into becoming a non-profit organization to rescue animals. You could be getting funding for it. (I used to work in this branch of the government at one time) and people in our ministry set up non-profit organizations. It's not that hard to get funding for a start up. Check it out.
Also what happened to the guy you were going to get married to that you would live at his house when you didn't have DS? Don't ask?

There really aren't any laws if the puppies are younger than 12 weeks but these puppies (9 weeks) have a certificate of health, rabies shot, dewormer, first Parvo and DTP shots and the paperwork to go along with it. They should be able to clear customs just fine. (Fingers crossed).

Yubon, I am that crazy cat lady here...at one time I had 27 cats coming here.
We live on a dead end road in the country...
One time a black dog and goat came here and I tied the small goat up by the house, pup stayed right with the goat...I was lucky,I found the owner...

May I ask how many cats you have? 18 Yep 9 are in the house and there are 9 ferals that I feed outside. Everyone is spayed/neutered. Only 3 in the house are pets that I actually went out and got (8 and 11 years ago). 2 more came to me as starving strays and were tame and so I brought them inside (couldn't find the owners). And the last 4 are from a litter of kittens that were born in my garage last summer.

If I had a choice to be with a group of dogs or a group of humans the dogs would win every time.
Thank you for opening your heart and your home.

@yubon we recently rescued a 7 month old feral cat from our local feral program. She is free roam on our property and lives in our barn. She had no human contact before being captured, and now she doesn't run from us.
How much food should we give her a day? We have wet and dry food. Can you give me a tough idea? Thanks!

One 5-ounce can a day and a scoop of dry food (I use a 12-ounce cup) should be plenty. Give the dry food in the morning so she can graze all day and the wet food at night. Don't leave food outside at night because you will attract critters. Don't forget fresh water, all the time.
