I have just finished Case Histories by Kate Atkinson. I saw this as a TV series on the BBC a few years back, and decided to read it when I found out it was based on a book. It was very interesting, as I could only remember parts of it as I read, and I am sure that some things were changed a bit. It it the story of a retired policeman in England, who now works as a private detective. He has 3 clients, and as he starts looking into the cases, the stories all become entwined in some way. I read Case Histories two books ago! I had no idea it was a show! Now I will have to look for it online.

For Book Club, I read The Last Anniversaryby Liane Moriarity. One of the things I love about her books is the way she portrays internal dialogue, and I thought she did a good job again, however, the storyline and characters were off the charts odd. Huh. It'll be interesting to hear what others thought at Book Club.
Then I read the recommended to me (and all others in the audience) by David Sedaris Family Life by Akhil Sharma. Sedaris was correct in that the writing was very nicely done, but the storyline didn't do much for me.
I am working through a kind of fluffy saga series by Robert Vaughn, I read the one about the early 60s, The New Frontier and enjoyed.

I finished listening to Stephen King's Mr. Mercedes. It really held my interest, liked the story and Will Patton was the reader- he did a fabulous job. I really liked 11/23/63 by SK- and was not disappointed in this story. I am going to start The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. I read Mr. Mercedes at the end of last year and really, really like it. Did you know that it is a trilogy? I can't wait to read the next 2 books. They are Finders Keepers and End of Watch.wow- I did not know that-- thanks so much! I am going to add them to my summer reading list!

Finished The Shadow if the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, and really enjoyed it. It was a hard-to-put-down book for me. It was originally written in Spanish, and I wondered about the translator's choices a time or two, but nothing major or distracting. It's about a young boy after the Spanish Civil War, the son of bookseller, who falls in love with a book and goes searching for more by the same author. He finds that someone has been systematically destroying everything that was ever printed by this author. When he is a teenager/young man, he goes searching for any information he can find about the author, and finds himself caught up in the mystery and danger that still surround him. He also finds that the author's life parallels is own in many ways. Just started The Dive From Clausen's Pier by Ann Packer. Not sure if this is going to be too emotionally difficult for me. I may end up putting it to the side for a while. The book deals with the aftermath of a diving accident from the perspective of the comatose victim's fiance. I'm 3 chapters in and I can't decide how I feel about her. Shadow of the Wind was one of my favorite books. I remember wondering about some of the translations as well.

I just finished reading Everything She Forgot. It's about a woman who gets into an accident and is rescued by a stranger. As she recovers from the accident she begins to have flashes of memory and is inexplicably drawn to the man who saved her. It's told from the perspective of several different characters and bounces back and forth across time as the story unfolds. I did enjoy it. I think I'd give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

End of Watch comes out tomorrow and will miraculously appear on my nook. I liked Mr. Mercedes but I LOVED Finders Keepers. I also just purchased his son Joe Hill's new book The Fireman but haven't started it yet.

I finished The Sparrow. It was my second reading of this book and I took away a lot from it. Over the weekend I read Inheritor's Powder a non fiction book about the history of arsenic and specially how people used arsenic to poison others. It focuses on a case in England from 1833. Due in part to this case and the ensuing trial, the science of detecting arsenic was studied and tests were developed to measure the level of arsenic in a dead body. It was interesting. I've just began a much discussed book here, The Last Painting of Sara De Vos. I'm going to read it before I go back and look at comments from the last couple weeks. Is The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell? along with Children of God they are my favorite books. I lent mine out a long time ago and may just rebuy them on the kindle and reread them. Thanks for the reminder!

I finished What She Knew by Gilly Macmillan last night. Overall I really enjoyed the book but felt sad about some of the characters/events. I started Bad Signs by R.J. Ellory about 2 brothers who are held hostage. Only got a chapter into it last night so at this point I'm not sure what will unfold. I just finished What She Knew this a.m. I thought the ending was interesting. I am looking forward to watching Macmillan mature as a writer. 4/5 stars. R.J. Ellory is one of my very favorite authors. My top books by him are Candlemoth, A Quiet Belief in Angels and A Quiet Vendetta.I also read Everyone Brave Is Forgiven by Chris Cleve, who wrote Little Bee. I personally think that he is a literary genius - his prose flows so beautifully. The plot was wonderful as well. 4/5 stars for this one, too! Lisa

Currently reading Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. This one is going to take a while--there seems to be a whole lot stuffed into every sentence, and I am really having to force myself to slow down to catch it all.
I'm still listening to All the Light We Cannot See. I know I'm late to the game with this one, but it is such a good story and the narrator is wonderful. I was so annoyed on my commute home tonight because DH kept calling and interrupting my book!

I read:
LaRose by Louise Erdrich. 4/5 stars. Erdrich is a wonderful writer and I enjoyed the book (not as much as The Round House, which is why I gave it 4 stars).
Zero K by Don DeLillo. 2/5 stars. Premise sounded interesting, but I didn't really like it.
I'm currently reading Sweetbitter.

I am going to school full-time and working full-time so I am definitely not reading for fun like I used to. I miss it! I still follow these threads every week to add to my "to-read list."
I have been on summer break and last week I read Finding Jake. I just thought it was ok. I didn't really care for the narrator. But in defense of the book, I don't think I was in the right mindset to read it. I think I wanted something light and fluffy.

I'm about 70 pages into The Woman in White by Wilkie Collilns and am enjoying it but have had to put it aside for a bit because two books I've had on hold at the library came in and I need to get them read before they expire. So, I just started And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie and The Revenant by Michael Punke will be up next. I'm going to be busy reading!
