I'm too old to be asking such a dumb question.
But I make chicken tortilla soup pretty frequently. This morning, the daily dish recipe from allrecipes.com was chicken taco soup. It looks vaguely similar to my tortilla soup.
Is there actually a difference, or is it just different names for the same thing?

In my experience....taco soup is made with either chicken or ground beef. It has rotel, beans, corn and thicker like a stew. Tortilla soup is more of a broth based and not as hearty. Hth!

No difference, IMHO. "Tortilla" is more fun to say.

I wouldn't think there would be much difference, but it depends upon the recipe.

Thanks, guys. The recipe this morning did say it was thick almost like chili ... I promptly forgot that part. My tortilla soup has chicken, Rotel, veggies, black beans and corn, but it's thin and brothy, which is the way I like it.

There's always been a difference in the recipes I've seen. Taco soup is thicker and it has very much a taco meat flavor. Tortilla soup is more tomato-y, thinner, and has a different flavor. It's also often spicier than taco soup. Taco soup is a Midwest American invention. Tortilla soup is authentic Mexican, so it's going to have more heat.

My favorite chicken tortilla soup is thicker with lots of tomatoes, beans, and corn. I don't think I have seen a restaurant menu use the term taco soup. I'm outside San Antonio.

I make both taco soup and chicken tortilla soup. They are very different soups.
Taco soup is more like a chili and is very thick. Tortilla soup is broth based. Both are yummy.

I make taco soup which is very thick and more like chili. Just had it for lunch in fact. It also has a packet of taco seasoning and a ranch dressing packet.

Wow! I have totally learned something new today. Thanks, everyone! ETA for craftedbys, here is how I make it. I've tweaked the recipe over the years and like to add lots of veggies. Chicken Tortilla SoupUse 6-qt soup pot. All ingredients are approximations. Use what you have/what you like. 2 zucchini, diced 1 tsp crushed garlic half an onion, chopped half a green bell pepper, chopped half a head of cabbage, sliced/chopped chili powder or taco seasoning mix 1 can Rotel tomatoes 1/2 small can tomato paste 2 qts chicken stock handful of frozen corn 1 can pinto or black beans, drained/rinsed 2 cups leftover cooked chicken juice of one lemon salt, seasoned salt, pepper Toppings: crushed tortilla chips shredded cheese sliced green onion chopped cilantro Sauté zucchini for a couple of minutes in a little oil. Sprinkle on chili powder and stir. Remove from pot and set aside. Add garlic, onion, bell pepper, and cabbage to the pot and sauté for a couple of minutes. Stir in a bit more chili powder. Add tomatoes, tomato paste, and chicken stock and bring to a boil. Simmer 20 minutes. Toss in corn and beans, and return to boil. Toss in chicken, lemon juice, and zucchini and return to boil. Adjust seasoning. Turn off heat, let sit covered a few minutes, and serve. Top with cilantro, plus chips, cheese, and green onion if you like. Other possibilities: fresh lime wedge, sour cream, sliced olives, salsa, avocado.

This thread is useless without recipes! Sure. Here is mine for taco soup: 1 lb. ground beef 1 taco seasoning packet 1 ranch dressing packet 1 can Rotel tomatoes 1 can corn 1 can chili beans 1 can kidney beans Brown ground beef. Add remaining ingredients. Add 1-2 cans of water. I usually use the chili bean can to get all of the sauce out. Yum. Stir and cook to bubbling. Reduce heat and cook to desired thickness. Makes GREAT leftovers.

I've always thought they were pretty similar except for the meat you use. DH doesn't like chicken in his chili or soup (no, he's not a chicken noodle fan either) so I probably make more of the taco soup version.

They are completely different! Taco Soup is thick like chili and Tortilla soup is broth based and in my experience, much more complicated to make.

My taco soup and tortilla soup and completely different. I can see how some recipes would be similar depending on choices of meat and means, etc.

I'm filling this under 'learn something new every day'. I had no idea there was a difference.
Love the recipes, too!

The taco soup I've always had has been made with ground beef, and I always thought it was named taco soup only because of the taco meat seasoning. It has always been thicker, like a chili, too. Tortilla soup, IMO always has chicken, and is a more authentic Mexican soup. I'm not opposed to either. I've made and eaten them both
