I see that most have answered to keep it, but, to me, that doesn't make sense. Why pay extra, when you could save that money, and still enjoy your meals there? I would scrap it, and just pay per meal.

I'm with the majority that say keep the private room. It wouldn't hurt to ask the restaurant though if you can convert that minimum to alcohol and/or other expenses.

Keep the room, you won't regret it.

I'd keep the room so you don't have to worry.

Will the restaurant let you take leftovers home? That is, if you have 12 people, can you order food for an extra 8 and bring it home? I had an event where I wasn't sure how many people would attend. We ended up with fewer people than expected so we told the kitchen to just pack up the extra food instead of serving it to the empty seats and we brought it home. (I hope this doesn't sound too tacky, but it was a lot of $ that we didn't want to go to waste.)
ETA: I forgot that you said this was a destination wedding and that you really didn't have a way to take home extra food, so my suggestion doesn't apply.

I'm confused.
I didn't read your post to mean that this event was your reception... I took it to be like the rehearsal dinner/night before the wedding gathering. If that's the case, cancel the room & save the money, for sure.
If it's your actual wedding reception, I'm torn. It would certainly be nice to have the privacy. But since you're having another reception later, I lean toward saving the money.

Fiance and I decided to keep the room. I hadn't thought to ask if we could apply the cost of the meals unordered to the bar tab. That's a great idea. Like I said, it would be hard to take the uneaten meals home. Can't hurt to ask.
We are having a very small wedding like 6 guests and very quick. This meal is reception like for those guests. We are having a bigger reception luncheon when we get home.
