That's great Paperaddictedpea. I certainly can understand your limited time, and a finicky cat (that phrase you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink should have been a cat not a horse!). Before I found www.felineinstincts.com I tried lots of different canned foods for Biru that were supposed to have a low phosphorous content (better for kidney diseased cats) but many of them he didn't like either. He'd turn his nose up at them and just walk away.
If you do try raw food again, might I suggest the powder formula from Feline Instincts? It's very easy and fast to mix up a batch of food once a week that will last you a week. For two cats (Biru and James) we'd use 3 pounds of ground turkey, the powder formula, water and salmon oil-they sell this at the same website with the powder formula. It took us 15-20 minutes to mix up a batch for the week, put it into the canning jars and stick it into the freezer and one in the fridge. James like it right away. Biru was picky-so I put flakes of tuna fish on top of his bowl of the raw food. It took him about a week of me slowly taking away the tuna and then he loved it too.
With grad school coming up this might be too time consuming for you. But it was shocking how much it changed Biru's health and his kidney disease. He gained his weight back and very shortly was chasing James up and down the steps like he was a kitten again. We were able to completely stop the dreaded fluid IV therapy completely and never had to do it again. His kidney disease reversed itself which is amazing and was shocking to me. There are stories of that at their website, and while I hoped for it I was still surprised to see it happen to my cat.
Because of this I try to spread this knowledge when people ask about cat nutrition and especially about cat's water intake. So they and their cats don't have to go through what Biru did by hopefully avoiding kidney disease altogether.
