What is something you have lost and although you searched and searched, never found. Until much much later.
Dh lost the keys to his truck months ago. Somehow it was the only set. He had to go to the dealership and get another key made. We sold that truck back in May. This week dh was sitting on our couch and thought he dropped a piece of food. He reached behind him between the seat and back and guess what was there! The lost keys!! We looked all over, including the couch. We tipped it over, looked between the cracks, everything. But there they were.

This story is kind of like that. When I was a kid, I had some little rub-ons and for some reason I put a mermaid on a penny dated the year I was born. I hung onto it for a long time but eventually turned it in to the bank and didn't think anything of it. Fast forward quite a few years and I'm working at a bank. Someone brings in their jar of change to get paper money and I'm mindlessly feeding it into the coin counter and I see a flash of green. Hmm, what's that? I fish out the coin and it's a penny with a mermaid on it. I flip it over and it's dated the year I was born--it was MY penny! After all those years, it found its way back to me! I switched it out for a penny in my pocket that day and I've kept it ever since.

DD lost her iPod when she was in college, at least 7 years ago. She has always been bad about losing things, so I figured it was gone and forgot about it (it was an older one she got in high school). Fast forward to last year when I was doing some purging. I was opening every single thing to make sure parts were there before donating. Opened the storage bag for a pair of collapsible headphone and there was that iPod! She must have put it in there on an overseas plane trip and then forgotten it. I fish out the coin and it's a penny with a mermaid on it. I flip it over and it's dated the year I was born--it was MY penny! That is crazy! You definitely need to keep that penny for good luck!

My father died in February after never recovering from brain surgery. Under the circumstances, it never dawned on me to ask him where my mother's wedding rings were (she passed in 2000). I always assumed that he and my stepmother kept them where I last saw them, in a dresser in the spare bedroom, but my stepmother said she had never seen them there. We looked there, as well as my dad's desk and dresser. No luck. I was heartbroken.
About 6 weeks ago, my sister gave me all the paperwork for a small insurance policy for which my siblings and I were beneficiaries. As a part of the paperwork needed, I had to dig up my mother's death certificate (she had been first beneficiary). I went into the attic where I had put a box full of her stuff that I had claimed after my dad passed. In the box was a velvet bag from the funeral home. I could tell that it had the guest register book in it so I thought it might have a death certificate as well. I pulled out the contents and inside was another, small velvet bag that was heavy. I looked inside and it was a key chain, the one with an embossed cocker spaniel that my mother used all the time, that we had given the funeral home for her to hold during the viewing. Reminisching about the key chain (and the two crazy cockers she had), I dumped it into my hand and lo and behold... her wedding ring and engagement ring were in there too. Of course they were... she had been wearing them for the viewing.
I was so happy I practically cried (and silently chided my dad for leaving the darn things in there and then shoving the whole affair in a box). I took them to a jeweler to be sized and cleaned. I asked about the diamond in the setting because I had heard that it had been my great-grandmother's diamond, and she had offered it to my dad so he could have it set into a ring for their engagement. Sure enough, the jeweler confirmed that it was a European cut diamond, vintage and definitely had all the characteristics of a hand cut diamond from the turn of the century.
So what was lost is now found, and I happily and proudly wear it!

My baby ring! I actually lost it twice.
The first time. I'm not even sure how I lost it. I can't remember if I was wearing it as a pinky ring (It was too small, so it sat right above my knuckle.) at that time. Anyway, I just knew I'd never see it, again. I looked everywhere, including the drawers of my dresser. YEARS later, I found it, of all places, in the top drawer of my dresser. I ended up putting it on a chain and wearing it as a pendent.
Forward several years...We were moving from our first place. We had a few people helping us load things into a trailer. At some point while helping load and clean, I realized that my chain had broken. I was absolutely devastated, as was my mom. Even though the apartment was almost empty, we couldn't find it. It could have been in any box, down the drain, in the trailer, hidden in the grass...we searched everywhere, with no luck. This was it...time to leave for the last time. I was heartbroken. The people that were helping knew we were looking for it, so a very close friend took one last look around the grassy area near the truck. Low and behold, he FOUND it!!! I was ecstatic!!!
It is now in a safe box in our closet. I couldn't bare to lose it again.

A diamond bracelet.. my step-mom gave to me. Like a tennis bracelet.. I lost it somehow while I was wearing it. I don't even remember when, when I finally realized it, it could have been in a million places, I finally gave up... I think about six months later my MIL found it at her house in a chair underneath a cushion.... I can't even remember sitting in that chair, but it was found.

I did lose my grandmother's jewerly that my mom gave me to give to my oldest. Still haven't found it but 99% sure it was in a purse that I gave my youngest to play with... (and I am usually anal about cleaning out purses before getting rid of them) but I am pretty sure they were in that purse that went to the trash because the clasp broke. I even called the trash company (it was that same day) but they didn't call me back or anything. I'm still sick over it and I can't tell my mom.. just can't do it.

I have two.
One is car keys. I drove home from college once and lost my keys between the driveway and the house. I walked through the yard not on the path, I was carrying a big load of laundry. (college kid:)
We searched the yard all weekend there were at least 10 of us, We rented a a metal detector went over the yard about 10 times multiple went over the whole yard.
6 years later, and who knows how many times the yard was cut in those years, my dad was walking through the front yard and picked up the keys!
The other is a necklace, I bought it for myself after my divorce, it was my recognition of having made it through the whole ordeal. A couple years after I moved and could not find the necklace. I was sure I had left it behind. I searched everywhere in my new house and I finally gave up.
Then I saw a photo of myself at my nephew's wedding.. which occurred two weeks after the move, and I had the necklace on. So I assumed I Ieft it at the hotel. by then it was months later, I called the hotel and it was too late.
Two years later, I was going on a trip, pulled out a suitcase I don[t use, and there was the necklace. (Then a few months later, I could not find the necklace again.) This weekend, my daughter needed my overnight bag and I pulled out an old one and BINGO the necklace was there.
Now it is in my jewelry box I don't think I will ever take it on a trip again!

When dh was younger he was at the lake with friends and lost the keys to the vehicle he had driven somewhere in the grass/lake/shore area. He searched for them, buy never found them. He had to get a ride back to get the spare to get the car home.
Over a year later they are back at the lake (this is a popular lake in our area) and in the same general area and he finds the damn keys.
A year later and thousands of people and he stumbles across his lost keys.

my dad gave me hundreds of dollars to give to relatives that we were going to visit overseas. the night before the trip was Christmas Eve. we celebrated, opened gifts and got ready for a long trip the next day. before I went to bed I went to make sure I had the money. I couldn't find it. searched EVERYWHERE. nowhere. i started to wonder "did I throw it out with the xmas wrapping? gahh, anything but that." well, we went on our trip and used some of our vacation money to make up the lost money.
we get back from our trip and I am putting stuff away. I am going through the camera bag (which held the DSLR) and there was the money! I swear I combed thru that bag over and over again. nothing. and there it was. somehow it had slipped under the bottom lining. it travelled 3,500 miles and back and was there the whole time.

My mom mentioned the necklace she had given me that was Gram's and a watch/locket. She "gave" it to me when the kids were little. I knew she was going to and was excited to receive it. But could not find it anywhere. Panic. Only two places I would have put it, jewelry box or special little drawer in dresser. More searching and panic. The more I thought about it the more confused I got. Where could I have put it? Now I didn't even remember getting it. Too much going on with being Mom of little kids. How would I tell her? I didn't for a l o n g time. Looked for it over and over again. Then I finally confessed. "Mom, I can't find it and I admit I don't remember getting it let alone where I put it." You guessed it. My mom then checked her jewelry, came back with it and said, "Well, I meant to give it to you." OMG! So much suffering for nothing! And my mother has a mind like a steel trap and remembers everything. That's why I didn't question her right away. I just assumed it was me. Not this time!

I went to a four day outdoor concert (30,000 people) in the middle of a field. One night I went to the bathroom in one of the Port O Lets. There must have been 50 lined up in a row. Five hours later, the concerts were over and my keys were gone. I was the DD and we were 5 hours away from home. I walked back to the row of outhouses and picked the one that felt right. I felt around the floor and there they were. Disgusting, but needed. My friends were always impressed by my honing skills of the correct port a potty. The keys were soaked in soap that night.

Not quite the same, but this reminds me of when my brother and I were tiny (maybe 4 and 6, he's younger) and we went for a walk by the sea with Mum, Dad and Grandad. Grandad had given us each 50p to spend on sweets, and my brother dropped his somewhere in a field between the car and the beach. He would NOT give up looking. We all walked back and forth and searched and searched. Finally Grandad stooped down and said "here it is!" and handed 50p to my brother. The day was saved and we got ice cream. It wasn't for many, many years that I realised that the original coin had never been found. Grandad had decided that enough of the day had been wasted and had "found" a new coin for my little brother.

My long lost object that was found is also a ring!!!
Years ago, probably 35 or so my middle brother pulled the winning ticket out of a fishbowl for a give-away at an event that my grandmother would take us to every Saturday in the summer. They were called "Shopper's Matinees" and put on at the historic Alabama Theater. It was a way for the merchants in the surrounding area to get more exposure because there would be an intermission mid way through the movie and that's when the drawings would take place. Each merchant would have something to give away each week. A child was randomly picked from the crowd to pull a ticket out of the fishbowl for each item given away. My brother was picked to pull the ticket for the nicest and most expensive item for this one particular week. It was a Opal, Onyx and Garnet cocktail ring and out of all the names in the fishbowl he drew my grandmother's!!! She dearly loved that ring and wore it with pride. When she died I asked my mom for it (she didn't wear any jewelry or much of anything girly) but she could never find it in any of my grandmothers belongings. After a few years I just gave up longing for it and then eventually just forgot about it entirely.
Fast-forward to this time last year: I'm going through the things that I was allotted from my mom's estate. I got most everything that she was holding on to of my grandmothers. One of the things that was passed to on to me was my grandmother's purse that she took with her to the hospital that final time. In it was a small velvet pouch tucked off in one of the many little zippered compartments of her purse. In it was the ring, my grand-father's long lost pocket watch (It's an Elgin) and his tiger's eye ring!!
The Opal luckily survived all those years without being oiled or watered. It still has such lovely fire in it!!! It is my most treasured piece of jewelry for two reasons: 1st it was my grandmother's and 2nd Opal is my son's birthstone. I've been patiently waiting for SOMEONE to give me an opal ever since he was born. I'm very much a believer in the old wive's tale that you should never buy an opal for yourself...that it has to be given to you.
When I found the ring I put it on my finger and just cried and cried over it. My son, seeing how happy it has made me, gave me a lovely pair of earrings to match it last year on his birthday.

These are awesome stories!
I have two stories of lost and found items. Neither is as fascinating as these other stories though. The first is a set of keys lost years ago. And of course, a good number of keys on the ring were the only known key to whatever. It was an expensive ordeal. Fortunately, I had given my mom a house key, so we were able to get another made off of that. I replaced all the bedroom door knobs with new locking ones. I didn't know that you could just have them rekeyed for a lot less money until I went to replace the security screen door lock. I finally called a locksmith to rekey that door. I had to replace keys to garage cabinets, my file cabinet, etc. and replace things like the wheel locks and steering wheel lock thing on the car. I hadn't realized how many keys I carried until I had to recall them to replace them. It was annoying, expensive, and really time consuming.
I had a second set of keys made while replacing everything and gave them to my mom to hold for me, although I never lost a key again. I also learned never to go to places like the Home Depot to have keys made. I went 3 times for 2 particular keys. They would make a replacement key that looked identical to the original, but when I tried to use them, they would not operate the locks. I finally went to one of those key kiosks in a shopping center parking lot where all the guy does is make keys. The keys were over double the price of Home Depot, but he guaranteed them to work. He said he would give me $100 per nonworking key. They all worked. I also learned that he was an actual locksmith that could have come to the house to get pretty much everything done all at one time. Next time.
Two years go by. My son and I are decorating the house for Christmas. Inside one of the boxes of ornaments sat my keys! They were right there on the top layer in one of the little cube spots of the plastic thing that kept the ornaments from touching and breaking. How they got put away with the Christmas stuff I will never know. It was in January that I lost the keys, but it didn't occur to me to get all the Christmas boxes down to go through them. We did not decorate for the next Christmas because my son was having surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and we would not be home enough to enjoy it. That year, we made origami ornaments and put them on the ficus tree plant in the living room. Everybody needs 3 sets of keys, right?
The other thing I lost was my little diamond earrings that my ex had given me for my birthday. They were just plain studs, so they could have ended up anywhere. I searched every purse I owned and every pocket of all clothing items. I swear I went from ceiling to floor, opening everything that they could have landed in. Six years go by. My son and I were moving my furniture enough for me to vacuum underneath it. We were getting new carpeting and I didn't want them to see what accumulates under the bed where I couldn't reach with the wand. When my son moved the nightstand, I guess he saw a glint of light on something. My earrings! They had fallen off the night stand right where I last remembered seeing them last. I had a bad habit of taking them off after I had already gotten into bed at night and just setting them on the nightstand. We checked there, probably 10 times at least. They had fallen into the tiny space made in the carpeting where the foot of the nightstand made an indentation.
How they fell directly into that tiny spot is another mystery. And how I did not vacuum them up over the years I will never know. I usually didn't move the big furniture when I cleaned, I used the hand nozzle and got down on my hands and knees and vacuumed under each piece with the extension wand. I know I ran the wand around the outside edge of those nightstand feet multiple times over the years.
I was so excited to get those earrings back! I always wore two earrings in each ear, the little diamonds and the set of pearl studs that my father had bought for me at Sea World when I was little. Remember the oyster divers? The women would take your ticket and dive down in the water and pick up an oyster for you. You took the oyster to a counter where they cracked it open to get to your pearl. I wonder if they still do that? Dad had me choose what I wanted the pearl set into and I picked the earrings. I already had a necklace from there. I still have that too. Anyway, when you choose earrings, they just get a box of pears and match up one to the size and look of your pearl. I treasured those pearl earrings and wearing the diamond/pearl combination went with everything I ever wore. I should see if I can still get two earrings in again. I have a feeling the second hole has closed up though.

I've never done it at sea world but my friend has and she says it's oddly addictive, she kept trying for matching pearls or something and did it 5 or 6 times, lol.

One thing I hate are toys with lots of pieces because I constantly feel the need to audit them. Ds has a puzzle which was missing a zebra for months...it It suddenly reappeared when I took out the Halloween decorations. Apparently my son had helped me pack it and then found it again. Also dh had one set of keys that went missing for a car and he was sick about it, searched everywhere to no avail. He was going to his closet for a shirt and there they were in the middle of the floor. I'm convinced ds did it, he was only Maybe 2 at the time.
When something goes missing I tell dh to check the closet floor :-)

What a fabulous story. So glad you found those rings. I would love to see a pic of them if you're comfortable sharing one. Happy to oblige, if you are willing to ignore my wrinkly hands. LOL The diamond band is my wedding ring, which I now wear with my mother's engagement ring. I have not yet worn her wedding band. Not sure why, but it feels sacrosanct.

When I was a freshman at LSU my girdle went missing during the OLE Miss pantie raids. We were threatened with expulsion if we threw anything to the thousands of boys screaming *WE WANT PANTIES* in front of my dorm and my window was on the 2nd floor overlooking them. Many girls on our floor had run into my room so I feared someone had thrown it out the window. Of course my mom had sewn those little tags with my name in ALL my clothing. Months later I happened to turn over the cushion in the easy chair and there was my very flat girdle.

Could someone please tell me where my Pandora Essence bracelet is please. I have turned the house and my car upside down, looking for it. My daughter found her Pandora bracelet in a rarely worn jacket pocket about 9 months after she lost it and had of course already replaced it. Good luck. I have lost and found charms but not the whole bracelet.

When something goes missing I tell dh to check the closet floor :-) I do this too, constantly put the pieces together for things that go together of DD's toys and stuff. Auditing is a good word for it. For her third birthday, I bought a set of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse characters to put on her cake thinking she could play with them after her birthday. After her party I washed them up for her to play with and the Mickey from the set went completely MIA in the days after her party. I tore the house up multiple times looking for it, even in chairs and couch cushions, along baseboards, everywhere. He never did turn up and we've had all of that furniture moved around and totally away from the walls several times since. The other thing that went missing that day was a 3" bouncy ball that went with a plastic baseball bat. It was only played with in the house, the dogs were confined in another room, and it was way too big to get sucked up in the vacuum. Never did find that either, so I guess Mickey stole it!

Over spring break we were cleaning out our garage attic, and I found a box of long lost miscellaneous Christmas decorations/junk (marked wedding memorabilia). Inside the box, was an engraved Zippo lighter, I had purchased for my FIL for Christmas one year, and misplaced. My FIL had quit smoking at least 20 years prior to his passing, 2 years ago.

And of course, when I look into it, many of them have been discontinued.

Wow, that is a good luck penny for sure.
