Ever since my first pregnancy (which, unfortunately, did not last long), I've gone from being the one who didn't understand why people could cry during a movie to the one in the movie theatre crying the ENTIRE way through the movie UP. I was pregnant with my second son when the Sandy Hook shooting happened and spent my oldest son's nap curled up with him on the floor of his room (he had already fallen asleep, so I went in there and curled up on the floor...he woke up, saw me and wanted to join me). I just don't handle sad news well and it seems that no matter where I look, it's all I see. It even fills my trending feed on FB. I struggle to keep my composure reading about so much tragedy, especially when it involves children. Even more so when it involves those that are supposed to be the ones that keep them safe.
Yesterday, my husband told me about something that happened to a former co-worker of his from his second job. The guy is 23 now and was a teenager when they worked together. Apparently, since his time there, he has had three kids, the oldest being just about 6 weeks older than my second son. The former co-worker was arrested for murdering her over the weekend. A 3 1/2 year old little girl...dead...at the hands of her father. Cause of death was blunt force trauma to the chest. I never met the guy, but I can't stop thinking about that little girl. It just breaks my heart to think of the life she won't get to live and the knowledge her siblings with grow up with...that their father killed their big sister while they were all in his care. I just can't wrap my head around it.

I did avoid the news for quite a while, especially during the time when my kids were young. It scared the crap out of me to think about what kind of world they were being born into ... and this was the '90s.
My parents, on the other hand, seemed to watch the news 24/7 and were horrified that I was so uninformed. For me, it was blissful ignorance.
The problem with social media is that you just can't get away from the news. I would probably have been off all social media during that phase of my life.

Like the plague... I used to like to watch the Today Show every day before work. Now I turn it on and if I hear their "election music" it goes right off.
I don't even read the paper. I just do the crossword and puzzle page.

Thankfully, we don't really watch anything live these days and political commercials don't really show up on Sprout, Disney Jr. or Nick Jr. I have this app that gives surveys and you collect google play credit in it. I received a political ad on it several weeks back and I was NOT happy. It made me watch a commercial and then asked me how likely I was to vote for that candidate after seeing it. I answered 'not likely' but if they had had an option to fill it in, I'm of the mindset that if you harass me (and that's what I consider it) even if I agreed with you, I wouldn't vote for you, so I would have said that because of the unwanted solicitation, I would have been less likely to vote regardless of what they were talking about. I can't tell you how many times I go from politely telling cold callers for Presidential campaigns to remove me from their call list to cussing them out because it becomes daily the closer we get to election season. I SERIOUSLY regret putting my phone number on my voter registration form...I didn't think anything of it. I used to be a rule follower, so if a form asked a question I would fill it in. I'm getting much better about thinking why that particular entity would need certain things (like my pedi's office wanting all of our SSN's) and leaving them blank if they have no legit need for it. I told hubby I want to re-register with a new number, but he thinks they'll still call the old one...what REALLY sucks is that his primary job (a union) rents office space to the types of people who call and harass me. If I want to educate myself on politics, it surely won't be via word twisted BS marketing on the TV. |

At times. But since ditching cable, and not having access to crap like CNN, Fox News, etc. and avoiding national network news and morning shows, I feel so much better. Some newspapers and web-based news sites are much easier to deal with.

Yes. T.V. too now. Watching the new season of OITNB pissed me off. So much room for social commentary and instead they play that annoying song. Even Teen Mom and Real World will flash something remotely relevant across the screen.
Try the "Wildest" series on Netflix. Wildest Islands, Wildest Indochina, Wildest Africa etc. rivals Planet Earth

I stopped watching long ago. My parents always had it on and now so does my sister. I used to have it on in the background once a day, but I found it really depressed me. I catch tidbits here and there online, but blissfully ignorant sound good to me.

Looked up the guy...bail is set at 150,000...not high enough. I would seriously hope that he wouldn't have anyone willing to post bond for him.

I only seek out news that interest me. I follow local stations and NPR. If the headline isn't something I feel like I need to know, I'll skip over it. If it's something big, I'll read it and look for other sources to ensure I'm not getting a biased report. Then there's stuff that gets shared here and trending stuff on FB. I'm somewhere between blissfully unaware and informed. I do try to read news that could affect me, mostly on the local/state level. DH and I fall in this middle ground where we aren't majorly affected by most federal stuff.

As much as possible. I am aware of things going from the internet but I never watch the news on tv unless its for active weather event in my immediate area.

Quite the opposite. I love the news! Not the bad stuff, but I like to stay in loop. I watch a different channel in the morning then evening and I go between 2 news websites at work, for the variety.

I like to be informed, but have found I like it better by following the major news stations and newspapers on twitter. I can click on the link, if I feel inclined. The most news (national) I watch is small snippets on Good Morning America. I do like to watch the local news.

For the most part I avoid it. For big issues that are happening in the world, I usually check in online. I do not trust the press. I do not think they are truthful based on my own experiences so I have to take everything they say with a grain of salt. I also don't like the 24/7 news thing we get into where if its a big event its non stop speculation, wrong information and guessing games, or if its not a big world event, we then have to fill the silence with stupid stuff.

I never watch the news at night, ever.
I might catch some headlines on Good Morning America or something like that, but no. I don't actively seek out news (mainly because of the election).

I do, mostly. My oldest will be 9 this month and he's bent toward anxiety, and he picks up on things you wouldn't imagine a child with autism to notice. I cannot have the news on in the background of our daily life. The 24/7 repetitive cycle depresses me- it would be really bad for him. I'm completely okay with not being the first to know everything. When the world starts falling apart, I'll hear about it and then seek out the facts as I need them.
I am glad that we're all wired differently and there are people who thrive on processing data and news, but I know if I try to be that person it'll overwhelm me.

I have avoided most televised news ever since Sandy Hook. I can no longer tolerate the anxiety I have when I see newscasts that contain violence of any kind, not just gun violence. And I prefer to get my political news from something other than sound bites.

Watching the news on TV makes my anxiety soar so I avoid that. I will read articles on the internet. That doesn't seem to raise my anxiety level as much.

I like to be informed.
I did have a hard time with tragic historical topics when my oldest was young. Things like the Irish Famine and the Holocaust just made me cry thinking of the children who died and the parents who couldn't do anything. Before kids it wouldn't have fazed me.

Online/in print I can choose to read the articles that are interesting or important to me. I might put on CNN if something major is unfolding (the Brexit vote was the last time I had that on) but I will never watch the local TV news. |

I used to watch the 10 news every night. For years. Then I realized and recognized that it's all bad news and depressing. I've watched the news once or twice in the past several years. I don't miss it at all. I do check out the news on line occasionally, and frequently ask Google for the local weather report.

I just posted this as my confession in another post...I no longer watch the news or read the newspaper. It is mostly full of awful things, crime/terror/road fatalities and politicians. I don't miss it at all. A brief news update on the radio in the car every now and then is plenty

My solution was to subscribe to several quality news outlets on Twitter and pick and choose what I read in depth.
