I have an OLFA three part self healing quilting mat that I got from Joann's on my pool table. It's AWESOME! I use it to cut on, glue on, color on, whatever. I love it. I will be VERY sad when I have to replace it as it was pricey. I got it when it was on sale 50% off and then used an additional 20% off to make it affordable. www.joann.com/olfa-gridded-cutting-mat-set-35inx70in-with-clips/3295219.html

I would get an inexpensive craft mat first and have the kids try it out for a couple of days first before investing in something pricier. While I love my self-healing mat to craft on, I hate it to write on. If I use my colored pencils or write in or address a card, I grab a piece of board I have. The craft mat has just enough give to it that it makes it too soft to write on. If your kids are going to be doing homework on it, it may bug them, too.

We use placemats for this use. Target generally has some in the kids plates area and I store them under the sink. We use them for playdoh, painting at the table, glitter paint, etc. I have also seen them a toy stores as laminated maps. My daughter who is 5 is pretty good at using them when needed

I have a big piece of masonite that I bought when I was taking a bookbinding class years ago. It gets used for all kinds of things.
