How long have you had it?
Our unit is 16 yo and I think it just bit the dust. Has always been far noisier than I think it should have been, and very close to our neighbor's master bedroom window. they've been really great about it, but I always felt bad when we ran it... and then they got new windows and it doesn't affect them.
Anyway, looking for recs. Our house is 2300 sq feet and one half of the house, closest to the unit, is always much cooler.
Thanks in advance for any tips!

Watching this thread closely. My 38 year old air conditioner just got a poor prognosis by the repair man yesterday. I'm hoping to get another 2 years out of it but it's iffy.

Mine is about 15-16 years and the tech said we are on borrowed time. I bet your electric bill will go down with a new unit.

Yes, I love it! I lived for many years without Central A/C but had a Trane unit installed about 15 years ago and it is still going strong with no problems. I'm grateful for it everyday

disneypal and lbp - so the units are quiet too? I must admit I've never heard of Trane. Our unit is a Honeywell.

Ours isn't that old but I have a bad feeling about it. I have gotten a bid for a new one, but it is hard to figure out what we need. I'm frugal, but I really want my house to be cooler.

I'm watching too as I've decided that this will be my last summer without central air. We've had a lot of 90+ degree days and I don't do hot very well. My furnace is 20 years old so I plan to replace it and have AC added next spring.

We just replaced our A/C unit yesterday. It was 15+ years old and definitely on it's last leg. It couldn't cool the house lower than 80 degrees. Our bedroom was the worst. It was the hottest in the house. I was against spending so much money on something we only use a few months per year. But dh had too many positive reasons to invest. He got a few quotes from some companies and we ended up going with who his co-workers referred. Our house is 2500 sq ft. We went with an American Standard unit. It's a bit quieter than what we had and definitely more powerful. Now our bedroom is one of the coldest!
My advice is to shop around before spending this big chunk of change. Do research on unit sizes and differences in types and brands. Familiarize yourself with how it works so you can ask important questions. Dh asked some tough questions and some obvious ones and the way the salesmen answered them made a big difference in our decision making.

Anyway, looking for recs. Our house is 2300 sq feet and one half of the house, closest to the unit, is always much cooler. Same size as our house and same problem with one side cooler than the other. When you have the unit replaced, have them evaluate the number and placement of air returns. They added 2 on the hot side of the house and it has made a world of difference! We also added a couple more vents due to changing the floor plan. Surprisingly, it didn't add much to the overall cost. We installed a Trane 3 years ago and have been very pleased with it. No problems and it keeps the house cold. Prior to that we had a Lennox for about 15 years. While it did cool, we had many problems starting about 1 year into it. The Trane has been better in that respect. Save

I replaced my furnace and A/C about 5 years ago, getting rid of the builder grade units. I think they were a bit small for the house as it seemed I couldn't get the house warm enough in the winter or cool enough in the summer. So my new units may be just on the big side for the house but I no longer have temperature issues. And my heating and cooling bills dropped dramatically.
Oh, and Trane for me.

My place is very small so the quote I got for a new system of central heat and air with install was only $4200. Very, very reasonable. I just have to have $4200.

We replaced our Heater and Air Conditioning systems less than two years ago and what a difference! Our old system was original in our house which was built in 1990. We went with Rheem and have been very pleased. The units are outside our downstairs home office and I can barely hear them. We have a system for each floor and we paid just under $13,000 I believe. (about 2,800 sq ft)

We have a Trane. I don't remember exactly how old it is but we had it put in several years ago. Love it.

I think ours was installed in 1986, so 30 years old. We only have AC on the 1st floor. It works great, I'm not sure of the brand. Upstairs we use window units in the bedrooms. We have original radiant heat. The joys of an old house (1922).

We have an Arcoaire in our 100+ year old building and are very happy with it. It was already here when we bought the building.

I have a Payne which is made by Carrier. I just looked at the reviews for it and they aren't all that great, but I have had zero problems with it and am very happy with it.

I think ours is Trane as well. We had to replace our old one after 8 years. The builder didn't put a large enough one in our house either, or enough vents. I'm so much happier with our new one and our house can keep up with the heat. It was expensive, but worth it. It'd better last.
The thermostat they installed didn't last though and I think they installed it incorrectly. When we replaced it, our bill went way down.

Our Lennox was installed in 2006. We bought the house in 2010 of the sheriffs foreclosure auction. We were happily surprised when we had the HVAC inspected. We've been very happy with it.

I have heard 12-15 is the typical life of an AC unit. In awe of the people on here that it double that time! It sounds like you might have some other issues outside of just the unit itself. You need to have your ducts looked at. It could have been done wrong from the start and you will just be throwing money at one issue but it won't solve the problem. If you aren't getting 1/2 of your home cooled very good that needs to be addressed. It could have been the size of the unit or the ducts aren't adequate for your space or other things that a professional will know.

Something needs to change, duct-wise or power-wise or else-wise.

I installed a Trane about 8 years ago, and I've never had a problem. Mine is a/c and heater as I'm all electric, so that thing is used year round.

We have a 1600 sq foot home in Florida and had to have our unit replaced 18 months ago.
We used a local guy and he put in a Goodman 4 ton unit....which is the same size we had. The one that came with the house when we purchased it was 21 years old at that time.
Our installer told us that a lot of people do not put the right size unit for their sq footage with shortens the life of the unit.
He recommended 1 ton per 400-500 sq foot of space being cooled/heated.
We have no complaints with the Goodman unit or their service, in fact they come out annually to service it which was part of their package when you buy from them.
Edited to add that our power bill has been reduced by about 40% since we installed this new unit too, so it's a win, win all around...and it's also very quiet....the only time you can hear it is if your are outside near the unit when it kicks on.

We replaced both of our Trane units in the past year. Our house is about 15 years old and 3200 sq ft. We were told they were on the small side for the amount of square footage. We never had issues with them not cooling enough or maintaining a consistent temperature, they just simply quit and we were told it would be more expensive to fix than to replace considering the age and the fact they were too small. We have heat pumps so use them for air and heat, year round. We replaced both units with larger Tranes for about $12,000 total. I don't hear them when they run so they must be on the quiet side, but then again our houses aren't super close together.
