I posted last week about my dd and dgd leaving an abusive relationship in another state and coming "home" and just thought I'd give you all an update.
First...my little granddaughter is the cutest baby in the world! She's so sweet and fun! She really is a good baby! My daughter has been opening up to both me and my husband (he's not her father) about the situation she left. I'm so glad she made the decision to leave!The original plan was for them to live primarily with her Dad and visit us on the weekends but after my husband realizing what the situation at my ex's was like he decided we should explore the option of them staying with us for a few years, at least. We are closing on our condo in two weeks and have been sorting out how we're all going to fit there. It's not very big...had we known when we started looking what the future was going to bring we could have found something with another room but it's too late to turn back on this and when dd and dgd are on their own this will be perfect for us.
I have to say, I've always known my husband is a great guy but he's really shocked me by stepping up and welcoming them in. And he's totally smitten with the baby...you would think he'd never seen one before! He babysat for a few hours today while dd and I did some errands and we came back to a sleeping baby with a full belly and a clean diaper!

Sounds like your DH is a keeper! I moved back in with my mom when I was going through my divorce and I am forever grateful to her partner for accepting me like I was one of his own when I truly needed their help.

So glad things are working out.  Now tell me about this clean diaper. Do you mean that the baby was clean when you left and stayed that way until you got back? Or did your DH do the deed while you were out. You really did get a keeper, didn't you. The two of you will make a great role model couple for your dgd. |

LOL! This morning he said something about "showing him how these diapers go on." And I gave him a quick lesson in Pampers (the cute design goes on the front!). He has three sons who are in their 40s and said he doesn't remember them being babies because he was focused on working. So, yes, he changed her diaper!

I'm so glad. Your dd needed a soft place to land. How wonderful to know they are wanted and welcome. And as others have said, your dh will set the bar high for future relationship possibilities.

KelleeM Your DH is a gem. How small is the condo you're in?? I hope it all works out. Glad she is safe and sound. We're buying a townhouse with two bedrooms. The listing has it as 1544 square feet but that has to include the garage because the living space isn't much bigger than the 930 square foot apartment were in now. It does have a half bath which we don't have now. Dh and I both have desks and computers...neither of us really likes laptops, in fact I gave my dd my MacBook Pro that is four years old but probably wasn't used more than 300 hours in those years. And I have scrapbooking stuff which currently takes up almost half of our office. Edited to add: I just looked at the appraisal and it shows the second and third levels as 772 square feet each so maybe we are gaining more space than I thought! We're also gaining a laundry room and our own washer and dryer! Dh is excited to have a work area in the garage. |

What a great guy!
Even though space will be at a minimum, the chance to be close to your daughter and the baby will be an opportunity you will never be able to get back.

This makes me happy. Please get your DD in counseling though because it's super tough in the beginning. Her self esteem is likely torn down. And it's important she fixes that before she dates again. What a blessing you and your DH are to her.

Kellee, I had missed your original post. Doesn't God work in mysterious ways? You are 2 weeks away from a bigger home that will work for your DD & GD and now will have the space to keep them safe. Sorry for the circumstances but so happy you have them with you.

I know how much you hated being so far away, and I am SO sorry that it had to take such a horrible thing to close that gap...but now that it has, the space won't matter with your darling babies (both of them) home safe and sound. |

Thank you all for your kind and encouraging words! My sweet husband doesn't come off to most people as the softhearted guy he is. He is determined to give our girls the life they deserve. My daughter wants to go to school and we'll do everything to help and support them while she does that. I was just getting ready to take dd to the grocery store and dh offered to do it...and then told me he's taking her shopping for clothes first! She left with little of her own clothing and only the flip flops she was wearing. I took her shopping for a few tops and some underwear last week and yesterday I took her for sneakers and comfy sandals. I keep thinking king about the Brad Paisley song He Didn't Have To Be about a guy stepping up and being a great Dad when it wasn't really his responsibility. Oh, and I'd give up an awful lot to get those sweet baby snuggles! Allison loves her Mimi!! |
