There was a thread recently talking about Publix ice cream ... and some posters mentioned their Publix favorites. I have those written down -- key lime pie, sweet ham sliced thin, fried chicken and sub sandwiches - not Italian.
We are heading for Florida soon and I know I'll get to shop in a Publix --- so I'd love to hear your favorites.
Mine - we got some great, multi-grain, sourdough bread -- I haven't forgotten in for 2 years and hope I can get it again!

If you like deli meats, their pastrami-seasoned turkey is delicious!! It's cheaper than regular pastrami, too.
I often use their refrigerated pizza dough to make pizza at home. It's in a little fridge next to the breads in the bakery section. Pretty much anything from their bakery is great.

Their cheesecake is good. Publix brand Calypso Crunch cookies in the bakery section are fabulous. Pecans, coconut - they are wonderful!!!

Carrot cake! The red velvet and Heath bar cakes are good too. When these cakes to go on sale BOGO and I'm all over it. Our favorite sub is turkey. Dh & I get one every couple of weeks for lunch. They will chop the tomatoes up for you and if they ask if you want Boars Head pickles..ask for a sample! Tasty! My son loves their raspberry ice tea - availble in half gallon jug. Oddly my dh prefers Publix diet soda over other brands. I hate generic soda but it is his drink of choice. If you have small kids they can get a free cookie at the bakery.

Ok....self-proclaimed Publix PRO here! I love the pimento cheese they carry - Palmetto brand. It is usually found with the rest of the cheese / dairy products. Super good with those pretzel chips or pita or celery.
I also love their peanut butter stuff pretzel puffs. They are usually found around the deli and are super good to snack on especially with beer.
That's all I can think of right now....I'm tired

Thank you everyone! Our first stop will probably be on the way in to our rental -- LATE, after a long drive -- so I'm planning a short quick stop for mostly essentials! Which, I'm guessing means that we will miss the cinnamon rolls -- but those cookies sound like something we'd like so they will be on the list!
Any more?

Well, you already have some of my favorites. If I am going to eat fried chicken out, it has to be Publix-I won't buy any other. Their subs are great, a really popular one is the popcorn chicken one. I had to pack one up in a cooler to take to the boy last summer when he finished basic training. They have a store brand cookie that is a chocolate mint cookie that is better than Thin Mints. I can't remember the name, but the package is white and green. OMG. I can eat the entire package on my own. Their bakery goods are all good-the carrot cake is also one of my favorites and my son prefers Publix's key lime pie to the one I make at home. I routinely buy a lot of their store brand items and have found that in a number of cases that I actually like theirs better with very few exceptions. I love their peanut butter, it isn't as sweet as the others. On the other hand, be prepared for their sweet tea being sweet (sometimes people don't realize how sweet we like our sweet tea.) I love it very much, but I will drink the hell out of 'real' sweet tea (brewed with the sugar added.) My dad, who is also southern born and bred, thinks it is a little too sweet and buys both the sweet and unsweet and mixes them 2/3 sweet, 1/3 unsweet. The good news is that if you buy something and it doesn't live up to your expectations, you can take it back and their customer service is such that you will get a smile, an apology and your money back without a fuss.

They have an excellent soupbar....my favorite is the New England Clam Chowder. They usually have 4 options daily...from what I've heard, they are all very good, but I tend to stick with the chowder.

I can't wait to hit up Publix on Sunday morning. We get to Anna Maria late Saturday night. I have to get a cheesecake to celebrate DD's bday because she doesn't like birthday cakes. We always get a key lime pie when there. DH loves them!
I also love their subs. Boars Head all the way. DH and kids always get the Cuban sandwich and I get the Italian. Why is the Italian not wanted in the OP? Is there something I need to know about it?
The one I shop in on the island is a small one. The larger ones are wonderful and have had great hot bars and such.

Why is the Italian not wanted in the OP? Is there something I need to know about it? Sorry -- someone from like ... Brooklyn ... said the Italian one wasn't as good as ... "theirs"! I don't generally care for any "cold sausage" based sandwich anyway -- so I said "not Italian"! It is just a riff on someone else saying they don't care for it!

Subbing as we will be near a Publix in a few weeks! We went last year but I just got basics and didn't even think about looking for special stuff.

The one I get is sliced mortadella, capicola, salami and something else. I make sure to have pickles and onions on there and the italian oil stuff on there. I think I like it cold, the Cubans we get pressed. I am glad to know nothing wrong with the sandwich. Me being from Arkansas will be good with it. LOL

Question about the Key Lime Pie to those of you who have mentioned it. We are going to Pensacola Florida. A restaurant there, otherwise very good, advertised the "best" key lime pie. I know that is very subjective - but it looked great on someone elses table -- 3 slices stacked on top of each other, one with more "green" in it to make a different stripe, piled high with whipped cream. Silly (3 sliced stacked on top), decadent .. but a fun idea for a shared dessert for a table. Unfortunately - the only taste was sweetened condensed milk -- you know that taste -- not tart or limey in any way, too sweet, too bland, too ... well .. really, I think they just put gelatin in Sweetened Condensed milk with some green good color! The restaurant was kind enough to remove the dessert from our tab - tho' we didn't ask them to, just responded, when asked, that we didn't care for it (but that was obvious -- 3 slices of pie with 4 little nibbles!)
In South Padre at Yummy's we had the best (really, it was incredible) Key Lime Pie ever. Tart yet sweet, limey, creamy -- incredible. I'm just sorry that we didn't find it earlier! I considered delaying our departure in order to stop by to get a slice to go for the trip home!
So -- how is the Key Lime Pie at Publix - I know you say it is good -- but HOW is it good??

I love Publix brand salsa! The medium...seriously, I can polish off a whole container with a spoon if I'm not careful! We keep it in the house at all times! I think they make it themselves in the deli, but I'm not positive about that. I can, sadly, report that their Publix brand sweet tea is nasty. Get Milo's if you want storebought sweet tea. My other faves have already been listed (the ham and the fried chicken). Oh, and if you have young kids with you when you shop, they can get a free sugar cookie from the bakery or a balloon! And be prepared for them to take your groceries out to your car for you (they will ask). You can tip or not...it's really fine if you don't. It's just part of their customer service.

The Key Lime pie is the best I've had. Creamy goodness on a plate with extra whipped cream.
Publix beef is very good. I always buy steak there and no where else. Also their prepackaged meatloaf, stuffed chicken, or salmon is soooo good. I had a thick cut pork chop stuffed with cornbread dressing that was excellent during the fall months. The nice thing, cooking instructions are on the pkg.

Real key lime pie isn't green, it's kind of yellowy color with only the slightest hint of a tinge of green. If it is green then someone put food coloring in it. There are a lot of recipes that call for condensed milk though-chances are that is what you get pretty much anytime you order key lime pie out. On the specific Publix pie, it is pretty kick ass. It is kind of sweet and tart at the same time. My older boy loves key lime pie and actually prefers Publix to mine. Brat. (and the raisins in the key lime pie was a joke. )

Since I just polished off two in mere seconds...I will ad Publix brand frozen buttermilk biscuits to the list. OMG..hot from the oven, with the butter melting and dripping down my hand as I stuffed them in my mouth... I should feel bad about that, right?

If you get a fresh salmon filet in the seafood department, (I don't know if it's whole, half or what - it's big, generally about 2-3 lbs) - they will steam it for you! It's delicious! So moist and tender! I didn't mention them earlier, because someone else beat me to it, but their Key Lime Pie, and Mango Key Lime Pie are both delicious. Tart and creamy.

My Publix has some great store made sushi. I was in the seafood dept getting some fish one day and watched the guy making a roll, I wound up craving sushi so I bought some. It was surprisingly fabulous! And the Key Lime Pie... YUM. That's all you have to say. Pub subs are a must, love the Boar's Head Ultimate - ham, turkey, roast beef and swiss + load it up with all the good stuff + oil and vinegar and the Publix sub dressing. Darn, now I want one!

beachbum -- you made the sub sound delicious and anxiousmom -- thanks for the description! Yes - I know that real key lime juice isn't green and neither is real key lime pie -- that maybe should have been the tip off about that pie stack! and, yes -- I was pretty sure you were joking about raisins in the pie! I've added the prepared meals to my growing list -- so thanks caro! I'll look for that tangy cole slaw -- it makes life easier to have a pre-made salad available. Thanks maurchclt !
