Yes! The last incident I remember was I bought a fitbit zip and I threw away the little key that opens the back to put in the battery. Not a big fan of the endless unneeded packaging. Especially those plastic clamshell things that everything from BJs/Costco seems to be encased in. I bought some Bio-oil and I swear I needed a chainsaw to get it out of the packaging. By the time I finally got it open I was sweating and bleeding. Fortunately, I had Bio-oil to put on the wounds.

I'm notorious for going around and throwing things away that are needed. I tell my family that if they would ever clean up after themselves, that wouldn't happen. I've thrown away my kids' retainers left in a napkin next to an empty bag of chips. I've thrown away checks left by DH in piles of junk mail. Most recently, though, I threw away a really cute pair of earrings I bought from a street vendor in NYC. They were in a tiny paper bag I had slipped inside a larger bag with DD's purchases in it. DD took out her stuff and, in cleaning up, I threw the large bag away with the small bag still inside. And didn't realize it until we were on the plane going home.

A $2000 check. Oops. MIL sent a birthday present of some make-up brushes. I did as I always do and put them away immediately after discarding the packaging. When I was on the phone thanking her it turns out she had put a check in the back of the package. Yeah, I made fast work of going through that garbage!

Yes, we have dug through trash for many things. Especially when are son was a toddler, he would throw our keys away. DS threw out a small crystal bowl when he was a toddler. We didn't figure out where it had disappeared to until we caught him throwing another empty bowl away. I felt terrible, since it was a gift from my MIL. We did have a good laugh when we figured it out.

We are fairly certain my sons bottom retainer ended up in the trash. And by the time we noticed it, the trash had long since been taken away, so no digging was done. <sigh>
When I was working as an assistant in our elementary school, one of my charges was a boy w/hearing aids. He would take them out at recess because sweat would interfere w/them. He often put them in his lunch bag. You see where this is going, right? Thank goodness the janitor loved me and he actually did the dumpster diving. No, we never found them.

This summer we rented a beach hose in Florida with my husband's aunt and uncle. His aunt alerted me the second morning at the house that she was missing her lower dentures/plates. She had taken them out after dinner the night before as food had become embedded underneath them(?). Unfortunately, I had to tell her the kitchen trash had already been emptied and the trash service had picked up the cans at curbside just about an hour earlier! What timing. She managed without them the whole rest of the week thinking the whole time she had inadvertently thrown them away. We'd been home almost two weeks when he sheepishly called me one day to admit she'd had them all along. They were in a deep pocket inside her handbag that she thought she'd checked... but obviously not. She had an appointment coming up the very next day to replace them. So, I suppose that's a tale of something we "thought" was thrown out with the trash, but it was not. Does that count? Something similar happened at the nursing home I worked at. A resident was starting to vomit and someone grabbed some tissues to get her plate out and threw them wrapped into the basin that she then vomited into. When things were over the basin was emptied into the toilet and it was flushed - yes, teeth included. The son made the nursing home bring in very expensive equipment to retrieve them. You can guess the rest of the story.

I *think* I threw my wallet away at a fueling station a few weeks ago! It was 4 days after that I realized the wallet was missing and I traced my steps back to that store. I didn't go back but I did call with no luck. I only lost 2 credit cards which were immediately cancelled (and no charges made thank god) and my drivers license. That's what upsets me most because of identity theft and stuff.
Had I realized it within a 24 hour period, yes I would have went back and dug through the nasty garbage!

And a funnier story, when my little brother was around 3 years old, our moms keys went missing. It was around 1997. She went absolutely crazy trying to find them until she had to give up and move on.
That was around the end of December .
The following year at Christmas time...yep...he had thrown them into the decorations box as mom was putting the tree up for the year. Lol

My keys. In the outside dumpster at work. At an elementary school. After lunch
And yes, they were found!

Yes, and this is why I no longer take out the trash while also holding my cell phone and/or keys in the other hand. Also there was a girl in my middle school who left her retainer on her lunch tray AT LEAST once a week, and we'd always see her digging through the lunchroom trash for it. You'd think she'd have learned after the first or 20th time, LOL!

When my kids were small, I threw away a bag of perfectly good clothes. They were an extra set (in case of accidents) that we were required to leave at school. So that I wouldn't forget to bring them, DH hung the plastic bag on the front doorknob.
Unfortunately, we also used to put a dirty diaper in a plastic bag (tied off, of course) and hang it on the doorknob to be taken to the hallway trash chute. This was usually at night, when we didn't want to walk down the (public) hallway in jammies...
So, as I was taking the kids to school in the morning, I grabbed the plastic bag and threw it in the chute on the way to the elevator. When I closed the chute, I belatedly realized that something was off about the "diaper's" weight and the way it went down.
I did NOT ask the super if I could please comb through the trash in the compactor!

Four weeks ago, I cracked a rib reaching way, way down in the tall, almost-empty recycle bin in the alley.
At the EXACT moment my fingertips found the bank envelope with $750 in it (!), I felt something snap in my side.
As of about a week ago, it no longer hurts to laugh....or sneeze...or roll over...or get out of bed.

I can't tell you how often, on lunch duty, we had to search the trash because some kid had wrapped theirs in a napkin and tossed it.

I've gotten much, much better this week, thanks - although for a while there I didn't think I would ever feel normal again. I figure the pain of throwing away $750 would last a lot longer!

Yes, I have dug through garbage cans for my retainer before maybe once or twice.
I also dug through the garbage for a check that was thrown away by my husband.
Oh, and one Christmas, part of a present was thrown away with the wrapping paper.

Well, I have thrown away diamond earrings. I had taken them off at work because my ears were bothering me... Put them in a little baggie and in my purse.. a couple of days later, I cleaned out my purse, along with tossing that little baggie that was in my purse for no reason. I didn't realize it until the next day. (that's where learned the saying 'This is why we cant have nice things' as an adult!)
I recently tossed my fitbit one that was in my pocket of my pants that I had on. I was stuffing garbage in those pockets not even thinking about the fitbit. Realized the next morning, I didn't have my fitbit. Thank god, I found it when I got home from work that day.
At a party with my mother someone handed her a $20 bill. Being a mom, she of course had either a tissue or napkin in her hand. some point in the evening everything got tossed from her hand. Thank god for good friends kids who dove through the garbage to find it for her.
Hubby has more than once tossed his glasses. (knock on wood) its probably been a good 6 years since he has done that though!

I helped one of my students last year dig through the trash to find her Invisalign. She was in tears. We went through 3-4 bags of yucky lunch trash before finding it. I had to convince her that she had to tell her mom, so her mom could disinfect it. She really didn't want her mom to find out!

Younger son sleeps in there sometimes (story for another thread) and simply leaves the thing on the nightstand in the morning. At some point, he & his older demon seed brother were wrestling in there and we believe it got knocked into the trash can. Since he's at the stage where he doesn't wear it every nite, he didn't notice it until long after. I suppose it could be in the room somewhere, but he's looked 3 times and it hasn't turned up. I just can't . . .
