So I am used to hearing about allergies in our family but this is getting kind of ridiculous, when we think we are fine and then these sudden allergies pop up, i.e. food we've eaten for years and then all of a sudden one day, bam, allergic reaction. Are any of you experiencing this?
DD, age 16 - all of a sudden this week breaks out in hives from strawberries. She ate them three separate occasions and it occurred each time so we ruled out other foods or situations, we're 99% sure it was from that.
DD, age 12 - all of a sudden eating pineapple last week tells me his tongue and lips are itchy. Again has been eating this for years.
Me, age 48 - all of a sudden 6 months or so developed stabbing pain after eating banana - figured it was something else, but over the course of months and trying again numerous times ruled other things out and it was indeed the banana giving me the pain.
I'm like - WTH? Never had issues with these fruits and now in the last 6 months we have all developed fruit allergies, to coincidentally the fruits we all love the most.

That's how allergies work. Always happen with later exposures and can happen anytime in life.
However, not all that you describe sounds like allergy. Pineapple has an enzyme that can make the mouth feel itchy and tingly. This is perfectly normal and not an allergy at all.
A stabbing pain from eating a banana does not sound like an allergic reaction either. I can't tell you what it is, aside from gas or constipation, either of which can be a reaction to bananas in some people, but I do not understand how this could be an allergy.
Hives, on the other hand, do indeed sound like an allergy.

At around 33 years old I developed an allergy to pistachios. I was heartbroken. They are my favorite nut

I can no longer eat strawberries or blueberries because they give me migraines. Never got migraines from food before. But at age 50 something, in two months time, could no longer eat those two fruits.

Oh.. and btw, cooked pineapple won't do this. Same for canned pineapple. The enzyme is apparently denatured with heat. It's only fresh pineapple! I sympathize. I love pineapple and I get this too! I also have oral allergy syndrome which results in the same symptoms from eating foods that are closely associated with certain pollens (birch and grass for me). There's nothing to do for that either because it's a self-limited condition- limited to the mouth and the symptoms go away without any treatment. But, there is a big difference between the two in how they cause their symptoms.
I am guessing different people have different sensitivities to the enzyme in fresh pineapple. I also read that different parts of the pineapple contain different amounts of it. I'm sure that is out there somewhere on line. I looked it up at some point when I thought I had developed oral allergy syndrome to pineapple myself!

My dd once at an entire fresh pineapple....her mouth hurt for days. So much that it's been years since she's taken a bite of pineapple. I think she's scarred for life. I have some sort of oral allergy to fruit. I'm not sure which one as I eat a lot fruit, none of which I'm willing to give up. Anyway, it's been in the last year that after eating fruit (I think it's strawberries) I have really bad post nasal drip for about an hour, during which I'm constantly clearing my throat.

My mouth and tongue get like that if I eat too much fresh pineapple. I still eat it, but only a small amount.

For years, I couldn't eat bananas, they made my mouth ache. Weird. There was a similar pain with cucumbers and melon.
After I went gluten free, though, I'm back to these foods. I hypothesize that since I have less inflammation in my body due to not eating gluten, these foods are no longer a problem.

I had to cut tomatoes out of my diet a few years back. I'm still mourning their loss.

I haven't had it happen with foods, but with meds, yes. Took a med for 3 years, no problems, then from one day to the next a severe allergic reaction. Took me 3 days, though, to realize that is what it was causing the reaction, because... 3 years!

I've had a reaction to fresh peaches or nectarines - made my teeth itch. Had it for years, and then a few years ago it just vanished. Canned or cooked were fine.

Yeah the pineapple thing makes sense to me now - canned never an issue but I guess DS will need to stay away from the fresh - not a big deal I guess since we don't typically buy the fresh.
I can deal with the banana thing I guess - it was just so sudden, I googled and I guess others have had issues with it as well that way. So odd. One day fine, next day, nope, not happening. And yes I incorrectly classified as allergic, it's as you said an intolerance, sorry. It's just the "can't have it" things.
DD strawberry thing was very out of the blue though. She's eaten them numerous times this summer. She's so pissed. She loves them and was so hoping it was something else, so kept trying hence the 3 times. It was definitely that. Ooh, I feel bad for her, since we live in Maine and our annual tradition of Strawberries are going to be gone now for her anyway. I told her it was like when my sister moved here, right afterward she developed shellfish allergy. And that was immediate also, for her, throat closed up and everything.
Crazy.

This doesn't really apply to fruit allergies, but protein allergies. My DD's SIL was recently diagnosed with this. Who knew a tick bite could lead to terrible allergies. Lone Star Tick Bite causes allergies

The only thing that solved the pain was time. And like an idiot I went and ate them two or three times again later, convinced it was a one time thing, or that I would try to eat more tums or have something else to eat with it so it wasn't on an empty stomach or other convoluted theories of trying to eat the damned banana. Have stayed away from them now though it makes me sad.

Canned or cooked were fine. have to say I've never heard of teeth itching, how strange! Nice that it's gone now though. Wonder if you have a tolerance now or if there's something different with the peaches.

I developed a weird allergy/sensitivity/reaction to salmon two years ago. I used to eat it at least once a week, sometimes more. I liked it raw, smoked, baked, any way. Then once night I got horrible pains that felt like gas but weren't. With trial and error, I figured out it was salmon. If I have a seafood dish with even a little bit of salmon, I feel it.
This is really timely, because I had those same horrible pains last night. All I had yesterday was fried eggs for breakfast, a baked sweet potato for lunch, and a Stouffer's lasagna for dinner. All things I eat regularly. Now I'm afraid to eat anything.

The banana thing is not an allergy, but a banana intolerance. We can lose an enzyme needed to digest a protein in banana. You should be able to eat them cooed. And I can eat a banana every once in a while. It is only when I eat them for a couple of days in a row that I have a problem. Thus developed after years of eating them every day

If she isn't afraid to try strawberries one more time, your daughter could try organic strawberries. Sometimes people have an allergy to the pesticide used.
We are going crazy in our house right now because one of my children is getting hives every day. Nothing has changed in his diet or environment so he has developed an allergy to something he previously tolerated. As we narrow things down, we suspect it may be our dog. He doesn't have an appointment with the allergist until late August so we are charting and watching everything in the meantime. He has been taking different things out of his diet and nothing has resolved the issue yet.

Google Oral Allergy Syndrome - After having a particularly scary interaction with the most delicious and juicy peach ever, I was diagnosed with this. Not at all fun. Mine has gradually gotten worse as I've gotten older. I'm not longer able to tolerate peaches, bananas or cucumbers.

I've developed allergies in the last few years. It's very annoying. Can't have nuts anymore except peanuts (in moderation). Some veggies like cauliflower, too many raw carrots, and snap peas have all caused a reaction. And last night I got itchy after 1 bite of canteloupe. So frustrating. Only one of my kids has an allergy and its a mild one to nuts. No fair to develop allergies later in life!
ETA: I forgot bananas! Can only tolerate a couple of bites before it becomes problematic. And not on an empty stomach!

I have the pollen oral allergy thing too. My mouth, tongue, and throat get itchy with nectarines and raw almonds. Roasted almond are fine. I have a lot of tree and grass allergies and it is related to that.
